Girli – Up And Down
At the age of 12, Milly Toomey originally wanted to pursue a career as an actress, but after two unsuccessful auditions, she left the dream behind. Three years later, she formed an all-female band where she played the role of singer and guitarist. She wasn’t the easiest person to get on with, however. Or, in her own words: “I was totally neurotic. I was the bossiest, most annoying band member ever.” After the group fell apart, she decided to carry on on her own, adopting the stage name Girli.
After singles like Hot Mess, Day Month Second and Deal With It, she put out her debut album Odd One Out in early April. The closing song has now been chosen as Girli’s new single. Another guitar-based electropop song, which is about having mood swings. But, the singer concludes, “This is me, and if you want me around you, take it or leave it.”

Girli – Deal With It
North London’s Girli (born Milly Toomey) has been releasing singles and EP’s since 2015. 13 of them. Only now, she announced her first full offering: her debut album Odd One Out will arrive on 5 April. No doubt, it’ll be full of teenage-angst filled electropop, including the former singles Hot Mess, Day Month Second and Young, as well as her new one: Deal With It.
With its more rock-inspired pulsing pop sound, Deal With It is a track I expect to come to life at the singer’s infamously energetic live shows. Girli is clearly ready to make this her year.

Girli – Day Month Second
Is acid punk a genre? If not, North London’s Girli (born Milly Toomey) may just have invented it. Her new single Day Month Second comes 294 days, 9½ months, 423.360 seconds after the track Hot Mess, that I already liked so much.
“Day Month Second is my breakup anthem,” she says. “It’s about wanting to get over someone so bad but not being able to shake the memory of them and how they messed you around. It’s an angry, sad, but also liberating tune.”

Girli – Hot Mess
Milly Toomey, better known by her stage name Girli, is a rising London pop star. A girl with attitude, as song titles like So You Think You Can Fuck With Me Do Ya, It Was My Party Last Night, Girls Get Angry Too and her new single Hot Mess prove.
Hot Mess holds themes of resentment against the music industry as well as staying true to yourself. Speaking of the track, she says: “It’s about all the times I’ve been talked down to, patronised, told that I should change my songs, my look, my presentation…” Have I got news for you: she won’t listen to such advice.
Hot Mess is the title track of Girli’s new EP, set to drop 26 September. The video shows the singer accompanied by her girl gang of skaters known as the Bowl Babes. If you liked Trouble by Shampoo in the mid 90’s (when Girli wasn’t even born yet), you’re sure to like this as well. If you don’t remember that one, I guess you’ll like Hot Mess anyway 😉
