Roe – Cruel
How many artists can say they played the legendary Glastonbury festival in the first year of their career? RoĂsĂn Donald can. And not long after that, the Irish singer and songwriter, who goes by the stage name of Roe, played influential showcase festival ESNS in the Netherlands. Although all this hasnât led to her break-through yet, it canât be far away. For starters, she refined her song-writing skills over the past years.
Fast forward to 2021⌠After over two handfuls of singles, Roe releases her most catchy song to date. Cruel is more guitar-based than her earlier output, and I like what I hear. The synths are still there, especially in the intro and the choruses, but theyâre less prominent. Still very poppy, Roeâs music has evolved into guitar pop, in a â90s kind of way. Me, I love it!

Eskobar – When Your Heroes Fall
Daniel Bellqvist, Frederik Zäll and Jocke Brunnberg formed Eskobar in 1994, after their love for music finally inspired them to start a band together. They only released their debut album ‘Til We’re Dead in 2000. Their finest moment came a year (and an album) later. In 2001, their collaboration with Heather Nova, Someone New, became a pan-European hit. It even reached American viewers via MTV.
Fast forward to 2020. Eskobar still exists and just released a new single: When Your Heroes Fall. A fine pop song once again, with PM Dawn kind of vibes. It reminds me a little of their Set Adrift On Memory Bliss, which can only be a good thing.

Carpark North & Samu Haber – Heroes
Carpark North is a Danish electronic rock band, formed in 1999 by Lau Højen (vocals, guitar), Søren Balsner (bass, synthesizers) and Morten Thorhauge (drums).
Ahead of their new radio single When We Were Kids (out on 20 April), which precedes their new album Hope (to be released 1 June), they put out a one-off single: Heroes. This is the official song for the Ice Hockey World Championship, which will be held in Denmark in May. The song features Samu Haber of Finnish band Sunrise Avenue on vocals.

Roe – Wasted.Patient.Thinking
Roe is the moniker of 18-year-old multi-instrumentalist RoĂsĂn Donald, from Derry in Northern Ireland. Only a year into her career she already earned herself a slot at the legendary Glastonbury festival, and she played at showcase festival ESNS in Groningen, the Netherlands, last week.
The singer-songwriter combines poppy songs with lush synths, big drum machines and guitars. âGrumpy electro popâ, in her own words. Wasted.Patient.Thinking is her new single!
Groenland – Healing Suns
After Japan, Spain, Boards Of Canada, Hungry Kids Of Hungary, Eskimos & Egypt, Dutch Uncles and of course Cyprus Hill (wink) there is a new band that named itself after a country: Groenland (which is, oddly enough, Dutch for Greenland). And even more odd: Groenland hails from CanadaâŚ
After touring ever since the release of their debut album The Chase (in 2013) they are now ready to unleash the follow-up, A Wider Space, which will come out on 31 March. The first single combines a synth thatâs deliberately out of tune with analogue elements such as a cello, a violin and a saxophone to great effect. A brilliant slice of indie pop, worthy of your attention (and playlist).

Tilly Louise – Baggy T-Shirt
Tilly Louise, from Liverpool, is a self professed fan-girl of local acts like Zuzu and Pixey. Well, that makes two of us then. Furthermore, she takes inspiration from the likes of Paramore, Haim and Blondie. Over the years Louise played multiple sold out shows. Both headline gigs and opening for her heroes such as Cassia and Fickle Friends.
Baggy T-Shirt is only her fourth single, and I think itâs a banger. Followers may already know the song, for itâs been part of Louiseâs setlist for some time now. It proved to be a fan-favourite way ahead of its formal release. This is in part thanks to it gaining popular buzz on TikTok, with fans creating fun videos to the track.
Self-produced and self-recorded, Baggy T-Shirt encapsulates everything great about indie guitar-pop, combining strong â90s nostalgia with alternative rock influence.
