School Of X – Feel Of It
In the 1960s, Eksskole was an anti-establishment art school in Copenhagen. A Danish collective of experimental artists, the group featured Andy Warhol collaborator JĂžrgen Leth, art historian Troels Andersen, and artists Poul Gernes and Per Kirkeby. âIt was about learning from each other and being progressive,â explains School Of X, a.k.a. Danish producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Rasmus Littauer. âThere were no labels – anyone could join. That philosophy is so cool and I really admire all those artists.â
Over the past years, Littauer has been the drummer of Asteroids Galaxy Tour, Major Lazer and MĂ, but School Of X is his solo project. 24 September, heâll release his second album Dancing Through The Void, and Feel Of It is its second single.
With a light-hearted backbeat, summery vibe and even an organ solo, it sounds like a future indie pop banger. The story behind the song, however, is somewhat darker, says Littauer. âItâs about the desire to break out of daily routines and boredom, craving for headspace, excitement and bigger emotions. Itâs a desire that seduces me and haunts me and sometimes comes with a cost. Sometimes you end up all alone because youâve been blinded by the light.â

School Of X – Words
Drummers who sing as well⊠Sometimes that turns out quite successful. Phil Collins, Dave Grohl, Don Henley, Sheila E., Ringo Starr, Karen Carpenter. Do you want me to continue? Well, I wonât, because Iâve got a brand new example to introduce to youâŠ
Rasmus Littauer is a Danish drummer, who drummed for MĂž, for instance. Now, he takes the front. School Of X is his solo project. Solo in the exact meaning of the word. He composes, records and produces everything on his own. What results is dreamy pop.
So far, School Of X released a few tracks, one of them being a SadĂ© cover. The first single to be released on a larger scale (via Spotify et al.), is Words. A song that slowly crawls under you skin. Donât say I didnât warn you⊠?
Urban Cone – Old School
When Swedish band Urban Cone was formed, in 2010, all four members were attending the same high school. They make feel-good electro-pop, which consistently takes the shape of irresistible tracks.
After touring with fellow Swedish rising star Tove Lo and The Griswolds, they are now ready to unleash their third album A Whole Lifetime Of Happiness. The songs – the band says – are âanchored by harder, hip-hop-influenced beats and funky guitarsâ, but that doesnât prevent this new single from being every bit as catchy as their earlier output.
sinĂ© – 2Good2U
If youâre a regular follower of Carte Blanche Music, you know Denmark bursts with musical talents. Copenhagen, especially, is fertile ground in this respect. Just like recent recommendations RoseeLu, Mina Okabe, School Of X, mags and Dopha, newcomer sinĂ© is based there as well.
That hasnât always been the case, by the way. At a very early age already, she left Denmark (including all worries, expectations and future plans) behind. She started to travel the world as a backpacker. However, upon return sinĂ© discovered nothing had changed, really. That may sound as a disillusion, but the experience was priceless. Playing street corners, bars and clubs, she made new friends around the globe. And equally important: she developed her own musical style, inspired by â90s R&B and hip hop, the legendary Motown-feel and carefree sunshine pop.
2Good2U, only sinĂ©’s second single, is a great example. Itâs playful and full of funky chord changes, spacey horn sections and break beats. Throughout, itâs held together by her incredibly soulful voice.
SinĂ© says about the song: âIt was really meant to be the ultimate break-up song. But while I was going all Girl Power and feeling free, I was hit by the insecurity that always haunts you when youâre trying to leave someone for good. And so instead, I ended up feeling totally miserable about myself. 2Good2U is about the inner fight that comes with not being able to stand up for your ridiculous self when life needs to change. Itâs a reminder that you are the one in your life who can make the chance to move forward from what might seem like a catch-22.â

Wildcard (week 40):
Madison Davenport – Oh Shit!
Madison Davenport has been an actress starring in American TV-shows such as âShamelessâ, âBlack Mirrorâ, âReprisalâ, âFrom Dusk Till Dawnâ and âSharp Objectsâ. Last month, she started a side career as a singer. Her first single was called Monsters.
As artists do nowadays, her sophomore single was released hot on the heels of her debut. âOh Shit! is my second release of many to comeâ, she promises. Explaining the songâs title, she says: âYou know that feeling when you realize âoh shit… I really like youâ. This song was that moment for me. I tried to have a friends with benefits situation, but dang it, I caught feelings. (âŠ) I wanted that high school crush feeling that I was having to be captured, because I know so many people can relate to it.â
Davenport cites Stevie Nicks, Lana Del Rey, Nancy Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Cat Power as her inspirations, but those are not the first names that spring to mind when listening to this new single. Oh Shit! is an upbeat love song that wasnât supposed to be one. Extremely poppy, but with plenty guitars to give it more punch.
Oh Shit! by Madison Davenport is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Wildcard (week 23):
Harm & Ease x Fefe Dobson – Lemonade
Rylan Whalen (vocals) and Danny Lopez (guitar) originally met in their first year of high school. They formed Harm & Ease in 2010 in Burlington, Ontario. Originally, it was meant to be an acoustic project, but then John Goodblood (bass/guitar) and Alex Hamnett (drums) joined the band, when operating from Buenos Aires, Argentine. With two albums under their belt, they relocated to Toronto, Canada.
By then, fellow countrywoman Fefe Dobson already had a great career, with hits like Bye Bye Boyfriend, Donât Go (Girls And Boys) and Stuttering to her name.
Now, the Canadian powerhouses team up for the most energetic party anthem of the moment. A track, they say, about making the best out of what life throws your way. This week, Lemonade by Harm & Ease x Fefe Dobson is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Itâll feature at the top of the blog for a full 7 days.

Wildcard (week 21):
Hyphen Hyphen – Don’t Wait For Me
High school friends Samanta âSantaâ Cotta (lead vocals, guitars, synths), Romain âAdamâ Adamo (guitars, keys, vocals) and Laura âLineâ Cristin (bass, vocals) formed Hyphen Hyphen in 2011, while studying at the Conservatory of Nice. They describe themselves as a âqueer pop/rock bandâ, bringing and defending essential messages for the LGBTQ+ community.
In 2016, they received the Best New Live Act award at the prestigious Victoires de la Musique Awards. So far, they released two albums: Times (2015) and HH (2018). Album #3 is on its way.
In a bid to force their global break-through, the band just released the classic pop single Donât Wait For Me. It was co-written by six-time Grammy winner Glen Ballard, who worked with Michael Jackson, Wilson Phillips, Van Halen, Alanis Morissette, Katy Perry and many more before. “It was a great privilege to be invited into the creative circle with Hyphen Hyphen”, says Ballard. “Their exuberance and talent was a great inspiration. This band has joy and energy at their core… I’m forever a Hyphenate!”
Donât Wait For Me by Hyphen Hyphen is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This means itâll appear at the top of this blog for a whole week!

Fauna – Done Alright
In the blur that was the end of 2020/start of 2021, when the rest of the world stopped, Fauna got busy. Brothers Danny (vocals, guitar) and Adam (guitar), Tom (drums) and Charlie (bass) perfected their sound and recorded new music. They even brewed their own beer.
The Manchester-based four-pieceâs new single Done Alright is a characteristically upbeat indie pop anthem. It combines summery pop moments, old school rock and roll percussion and soaring choruses. The songâs high energy and irresistibly catchy chorus work in antithesis to the poignant lyrics underneath.
Talking about the inspiration for Done Alright, lead singer Danny Williams said: âThe song came into being last year, during a time when womenâs safety on our streets was under the spotlight. As a band of 4 dudes we felt it was important for us to understand what we could do in our own lives to improve things. Creatively, this was our response. We wanted to join the conversation and encourage others to take a look at the world around them, learn to empathise and strive for a better and safer society.â
