Alice Merton – Island
Two years after (finally) dropping her debut album Mint â whoâs first single No Roots dated from 2016 â the wonderful Alice Merton is back with new music. Having dropped the track Vertigo in April, she now comes with two songs at once. Hero and Island are a good old-fashioned double A-side single.
Although not the song thatâs being pushed at radio, Island is my favourite of the two. And I bet my radio friends will agree with me. With its restless drums, a dramatic hook and a distorted guitar riff, Island has a nervous, anxious rock energy.
In an interview with Flood magazine, the singer says about releasing two tracks simultaneously: âI decided to put out two songs, partly because I see Island as the prequel to Hero. I keep thinking if âhopeâ was a spectrum, Island and Hero would be at opposite ends. Island showcases a desperate need for survival, whereas Hero confronts a realistic and slightly pessimistic fate, waving the white flag and admitting to its defeat.â

Awolnation feat. Alice Merton – The Best
Earlier this year, Awolnation released the single Mayday!!! Fiësta Fever. It featured Ima Robot and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros singer Alex Ebert. Apparently, the US band is still in duet mode. This time however, they go in full overdrive with an epic new release. Their new single The Best totally lives up to its title.
When first released in late 2019, The Best was an Awolnation-only production. That was enough for it to reach Top 5 positions in Billboards Alternative Songs Chart and Alternative Radio Chart. A brand-new version of the track is sure to take it even higher. The gorgeous and distinct vocals of upcoming German singer Alice Merton make The Best even better. A reworking and collaboration by the book, even though it came together while both parties were in self-isolation in different parts of the world.
The track is taken from Awolnationâs forthcoming album Angel Miners And The Lightning Riders, due for release on 24 April.

Alice Merton – Learn To Live
A year and a half after her break-through single No Roots, and exactly one year after I saw her promising performance at showcase festival ESNS, Alice Merton delivers her debut album Mint. Next to No Roots, her singles Lash Out, Why So Serious and Funny Business are present, so itâs definitely worth your time.
The first song youâll hear when you listen to the album is Learn To Live. A great track, with the same kind of thumping bass line as the one that made the German singer a star in the rest of Europe. This is Alice Merton in mint condition, ready for the rest of the world!

Alice Merton – Why So Serious
Alice Merton is a good example of an artist whoâs early successes first became visible in the European Border Breakers Chart. Former Carte Blanche Music Wildcard No Roots became a pan-European hit in the autumn of 2017, that later also crossed over to the United States. The track won her a European Border Breakers Award and I eagerly awaited more hits. Second single Hit The Ground Running came out last year and Lash Out followed this year. Both very good singles as well, but not as successful as her debut.
For the release of her new single, Merton freed herself from her distribution deal with major Sony and decided to walk the indie path. May that give this talented artist the success she deserves!
Why So Serious is about making the most of every day and was written by Merton in response to the awareness she had to write a new hit to follow up on the accomplishments of No Roots. âI was a little upset that everyone would ask if the next song would be as successful as No Roots. And then I thought, screw this! I’m happy, I have the time of my life, so: why so serious?â
Alice Mertonâs eagerly awaited debut album, entitled Mint, will be out in January 2019.

Alice Merton – Lash Out
Chances are, you first read about Alice Merton on Carte Blanche Music (although Iâm aware success has many fathers). Anyway, I instantly liked her debut single No Roots and made it Wildcard. It became a pan-European hit – landing the German singer a European Border Breakers Award – and has just entered Billboardâs Hot 100.
The follow-up single took its title too literally and Hit The Ground Running, but I think she could hit the bullâs eye again with this third single, Lash Out. And after seeing her show at the ESNS festival, last January, I can tell you there is plenty more where this is coming from. Alice Merton is a potential future superstar.

Alice Merton – Hit The Ground Running
Talking about a dream debut⊠Alice Mertonâs first single No Roots has already been a huge hit east and south of her home country Germany, and is now crossing the west border as well, causing the song to go up to a new peak position of #8 in the European Border Breakers Chart. It looks like No Roots is going to conquer the whole of Europe, slowly but surelyâŠ
In the territories that were first to discover her, the follow up single is out already. Hit The Ground Running is also part of Mertonâs debut EP No Roots. The song has big shoes to fill, but will certainly profit from the profile she built with her first hit. Itâs already âbubbling underâ at #4 in the Tips for the EBBChart.
Wildcard (week 28):
Alice Merton – No Roots
German-born Alice Merton has already conquered the countries south-east of her native land. Airplay in Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Lithuania, Macedonia and Moldavia has gained her a #11 position in the European Border Breakers Chart. Now, itâs up to the rest of Europe to step in.
Merton grew up in Canada, came back to Germany at 13, but spends a lot of time in the UK as well, where her parents had gone and live. Hence the title of her debut single: No RootsâŠ
I hope she feels at home on Carte Blanche Music though, if only for one week, for No Roots by Alice Merton is the new Wildcard! (you can find all of them in the Wildcards 2017 playlist).
Alice Merton – No Roots
Some songs take longer to make a wide impact than others. But once they kick in, they kick in hard⊠No Roots is such a song.
Alice Merton was born in Germany from a German father and a British mother. She grew up in Canada however. When she was 13 she came back to Germany, but spent a lot of time in the UK as well, where her parents had gone and live. Finally, she attended the Popakademie Baden-WĂŒrttemberg in Mannheim and started her career from Germany. No wonder her debut single is called No Roots⊠The song describes her feeling to not have a real home.
Earlier this year, the song was a huge hit in her country of birth, Austria and Luxembourg, reaching the Top 3 in all three countries. And now, all of a sudden, the track is crossing over to Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Lithuania, Macedonia and Slovenia, causing it to enter the European Border Breakers Chart at #11. Â No wonder, because itâs a great song, that deserves to finally become the pan European hit it should have been already.
