Alma – Bad News Baby
Success has many fathers, but failure is an orphan. Therefore, Iâm always hesitant to claim I âdiscoveredâ an artist. I like the idea of artists discovering themselves. But If there are two acts in recent years that were very early on my radar, its Dua Lipa and Alma.
The latterâs debut single Karma was record of the week in June 2016 in my then radio show Carte Blanche. A great combination of deep house, r&b and pop. The Finnish singer-songwriter and rapper didnât only stick out because of her neon yellow hair, but also because of her soulful voice and punk attitude. Her second single Dye My Hair would eventually provide her with her deserved break-through.
Since then, things went quickly. Alma worked with everyone from French Montana and Tove Lo to Icona Pop and Charli XCX. To be quite honest, most of her recent singles werenât my cup of tea. But on Bad News Baby sheâs back in form. Itâs a pop song with an edge, and as far as Iâm concerned, thatâs good news, baby!

Talma – Lifeline
Rock has many faces. Alt rock, classic rock and art rock, to name but three. As you would have guessed, I donât name these three by coincidence. Itâs these forms that London five-piece Talma combines. Their bio says so, so itâs true.
But although no one likes to be pidgeon-holed, itâs perhaps more helpful to make some musical comparisons. Most obvious, to my ears, is the inspiration the band draws from The Smiths. I know, Smiths fans are hard to be satisfied, but in my opinion, Talma pulls it of. And Iâm a Smiths fan myself, you should knowâŠ
Talmaâs single Lifeline is about the sense of alienation that can come with life in the modern city. âIt explores the juxtaposition of being surrounded by millions of people, but still feeling a sense of loneliness every day,â frontman Henry Adams explains.
Lifeline is a great song, that sounds like it couldâve been sung by Morrissey.
If guitar music is dead (which isnât the case, by the way), then long live Talma!
Alma – Dye My Hair
One week before the start of this blog, Almaâs Dye My Hair was the last Wildcard of 2016. Now that Iâve seen her perform at showcase festival Eurosonic Noorderslag, last Thursday, I feel the urge to bring it to your attention as yet. Consider it my present to her, because today, 17 January, itâs her birthday. Happy 21st anniversary Alma!
Alma is Finnish singer-songwriter Alma-Sofia Miettinen. A few years ago, when she was 17, she participated in television talent show Idols, where she finished fifth. Last summer, at the age of 20, she released her debut single Karma. A great track with equal parts deep house, r&b and pop, that went on to become a huge hit in the European Border Breakers Charts. Actually, it was this one track that landed her at Eurosonic Noorderslag; there simply was nothing more to judge at the timeâŠ
The festival bookers did a good job giving Alma this platform. She has a great voice, that is even enhanced on stage by her sister, who doubles pretty much all vocals. Their voices go very well together. Behind the singing pair, the beats are produced by three musicians behind launch pads, one of whom also plays guitar.
And now, there is this second single, Dye My Hair. It contains the same infectious ingredients as her debut, and deserves to become her breakthrough hit. Once that has happened, a re-release of Karma would be a great idea!
