Wildcard (week 4):
Altered By Mom – Dive In
I consider myself a huge Altered By Mom fan. 2020 was an extraordinarily prolific year for the Canadian duo; they released one song every week, resulting in a massive, truly great album, aptly titled 52 Songs. Two hours and 30 minutes very well spent.
Unsurprisingly, Gina Kennedy and Devon Lougheed eased down after fulfilling that project. They participated in a Christmas single at the end of 2021 and were completely off the musical radar last year. Now, thankfully, theyâre back! Diving head first into the new year, Altered By Mom just released a beautiful new single.
Dive In is a classic power pop song, with a hooky psychedelic sound which the duo describe as âSt. Vincent and Lenny Kravitz racing Lamborghinisâ. Lyrically, itâs a call to action to chase after the things that scare you the most. A relatable tune that clocks in just under the 3 minute mark.
Altered By Momâs comeback single Dive In is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Altered By Mom – You Can Do What You Want With My Heart, Babe
Even the artists I like best (as in: ever), have their weak moments. And theyâre not to blame, for theyâre only humans, arenât they? Itâs hardly possible to record only great tunes. That being said, it looks like Altered By Mom are trying to prove the opposite.
Since the beginning of this year, the Canadian duo are releasing one song every week. To be honest, I only recently learned of â and started following â their initiative, and itâs quite impressing. Three out of the four songs they put out in the last 28 days are absolute aces (and the fourth one isnât bad at all).
You Can Do What You Want With My Heart, Babe is Devon Lougheed and Gina Kennedyâs most recent release (at the time of writing, that is). Itâs written with Lawrence Nichols of fellow Toronto band Lowest Of The Low and features a modulation by the book near the end. Wonderful stuff⊠again!
Judging from the quality of their recent output, with 52 songs to choose from by the end of the year, it must be possible to compile the bestest âBest Ofâ ever. Perhaps even two.

Altered By Mom – Better On The Page
Setting yourself a task to release a new song every week for a whole year, doesnât leave much room to dwell on each individual track. Not even when itâs such a great tune as last weeks Carte Blanche Music Wildcard: Altered By Momâs Walking With The Enemy. But as predicted: the band already moved on.
This week, the Canadian duo share new song Better On The Page. And guess what? It isnât some kind of filler, but another top track. An up-tempo song with staccato beats. The verses feature alternating vocals of Devon Lougheed and Gina Kennedy, whose voices blend beautifully in the choruses.
A project very much worth following, and youâll end up with a great (and comprehensive) collection of songs by the end of the year.

Wildcard (week 32):
Altered By Mom – Walking With The Enemy
As you may have noticed, Australia and Canada are currently two of my favourite sources of exciting new music. Altered By Mom are from Toronto.
The project started as an excuse for producer/songwriter Devon Lougheed to play with some of his favourite musicians from all across Canada. But it really took shape with the permanent addition of Gina Kennedy (bass/vocals) and Jamie Williamson (drums). Well, not really permanently actually, for in 2020, Altered By Mom are a duo consisting of Lougheed and Kennedy. In general, they play all instruments themselves.
Long before Corona kicked in, the band set a goal for themselves: they would release a song a week this year. That’s 52 songs. In other words: quite a lot! Still, they manage to maintain a high standard, combining a knack for infectious melodies and classic song-writing with a quirky sense of humour and a tongue-in-cheek post-grunge aesthetic. They describe themselves as âlike Sloan had a baby with Barenaked Ladies… and then that baby stole your cigarettesâ.
Walking With The Enemy is the pairâs latest single. Or, by the time you read this, theyâll probably have released a follow-up already. But Walking With The Enemy is a song worth servicing to radio stations and playlist curators. Itâs an above par track which starts with an â80s, Neue Deutsche Welle kind of synth, before the drum kicks in. What follows is a tune so catchy, it deserves to be a hit (whatever that may mean these days).
As I like to put my money where my mouth is, Walking With The Enemy by Altered By Mom is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Altered By Mom – Hear That Sound
Altered By Mom started as an excuse for producer/songwriter Devon Lougheed to play with some of his favourite musicians from all across Canada, but really took shape with the permanent addition of Gina Kennedy (bass/vocals) and Jamie Williamson (drums).
Ahead of their new album Trapped In An MP3 (due later this year) the Toronto-based pop-rock band have a new single out. Hear That Sound showcases their knack for classic song-writing with a tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. And the way the male and female vocals are juxtaposed is just lovely. Boy, would this have been a radio hit when radio was still about smart and catchy pop songs!
The band says about the track: âHear That Sound is about making someone else cry. Itâs such a universal yet specific moment â because people cry all the time, but when it happens, nothing feels more deeply personal. In the audio world, we talk about crossfades where one bit of audio blends seamlessly into another, and sometimes relationships end and begin like that too. This song encompasses the sound of artefacts from a previous relationship fading out while a new one begins.â

Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and donât want to please everybody at the same time. Weâre here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, â80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this yearâs list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last yearâs tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. Youâll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, youâll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button đ.
