Archie X – Fight Me
When Archie X released their debut single Loud Boy, 15 months ago, the pandemic was in full swing. Only ten months later, the Belgian duo were able to do their first ever live show. Core members Charline DâHoore and Tom Lodewyckx didnât only do so in a full band set-up, they even managed to play pop temple Ancienne Belgique. Quite honestly, the performance didnât draw a full house. More precisely, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, there was no crowd at all. However, since the concert was livestreamed, many people enjoyed the gig from their homes. If you havenât seen it already, the full show is here.
I was one of these viewers, and of the new tracks they played, Fight Me struck me in particular. Now, five months later, itâs Archie Xâs new single. A track full of suspense, partly thanks to the sultry bass thatâs become one of the bandâs trademarks. An oriental-sounding synth melody adds to the atmosphere. The lack of a real climax only makes you want to hear it over and over again.

Archie X – Karma Sucks
Only five months ago, Belgian duo Archie Xâs maiden single Loud Boy made a big impression. On me, at least, and I launched my most powerful promotional weapon: I made it the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This means a song is highlighted on my blog for a whole week. And then⌠nothing much happened, really. A bloody shame, I still think itâs one of the strongest debuts in recent years.
But, one can also win a match in the second half. And Charline DâHoore and Tom Lodewyckxâ sophomore single Karma Sucks is another winner! Even though itâs a totally different track than their first.
Karma Sucks is a dreamier affair. Its first part reminds me a bit of one of 2013âs finest moments: Everything At Once by Lenka. Throughout the song, the production is ace. The combination of an acoustic piano with a subtle electronic beat and dosed vocal effects is accessible, but with an edge. People with ears on their head will put this on their (radio and streaming) playlists.
For those still in doubt: Archie X’s very first band repetition ever will be live streamed on their Facebook page, Saturday 6 February at noon. How about that for self-confidence?

Wildcard (week 34):
Archie X – Loud Boy
Debut singles seldomly come any stronger than this. Archie X are a Belgian duo, and their first track is totally exciting. Parts funk and parts jazz, but 100% pop at the same time. Excuse me if I raise the bar too high, but Billie Eilish is a fair reference in my ears.
Last year, Charline DâHoore took part in Belgian TV talent show The Voice Of Flanders, where she impressed the jury with her version of F.U. by Little Mix. Apart from playing the guitar (like she did in her audition), she also plays the piano and saxophone. Tom Lodewyckx, a musician in bands that accompany talents during TV talent shows, is her musical partner.
Loud Boy is their very first single and a very promising one. I love the kind of confident bass lines it starts with. After a short into, together with Charlineâs voice, a simple but effective beat kinks in. What follows, is a rollercoaster of vocal layers, voice effects, changes in tempo, creepy whispering, a jazzy interlude and more.
DâHooreâs impressive delivery and Lodewyckxâ tight production make for a song with international hit potential. Immediately picked up by Warner Music, itâs up to them to transform this promise into reality (no pressure đ ).
For starters, Loud Boy by Archie X is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, which means itâll feature prominently at the top of this blog for a whole week.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2021
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish next week, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2021. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 998 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021. If thereâs one â sad â common denominator to be found in this list, itâs that most of these songs have been criminally overlooked by radio stations outside the artistâs home countries. Radio playlists are growing more and more uniform, denying the diversity of the music available. Obviously, with over 60.000 new tracks added to Spotify every day the supply is kind of excessive, but more adventurous choices would be very welcome. Knowing this wonât happen, the best you can do is follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist, then Iâll keep you updated đ. This is what you can expect, based on this yearâs Top 2021:
- Mostly (young and) upcoming artists, many of whom release their music independently
- No less than 72% of the Top 2021 features female vocalists, up from 70% in our Top 2020 and 60% in the Top 2019
- We love pure pop songs, but with 40% guitar-based tracks, weâre more rock ânâ roll than average. According to Spotify Wrapped, our favourite genres last year were indie pop, modern alternative rock and dance pop, and we agree
- You can expect the best new tunes from all over the world, but even we have our preferences. We have extra warm feelings for music from countries like Australia, France, Canada and Denmark. Just so you knowâŚ
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2021 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, the shuffle button is your friend.
