Wildcard (week 41):
noelle – Cold Killer
Noelle Otsihsera Maracle is an upcoming singer-songwriter from Ontario, Canada. She was raised on the indigenous reserve in the Tyendinage Mohawk territory, where she grew up surrounded by music. After discovering the power of her voice at a young age, she started posting cover songs from her bedroom. Her YouTube channel soon counted 90.000 subscribers, which eventually landed her a record deal.
Following this year’s debut EP of original material, Cold Killer is noelle’s second new song of the year. It’s a high-energy track that echoes Kim Wilde. Musically, the ‘80s-inspired single is based on a frantic beat, backing synths and bass. Lyrically, it holds a message of female empowerment for everyone who has fallen for a player. In other words: an edgy heartbreak anthem.
Cold Killer by noelle is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Wildcard (week 29):
boy pablo – Be Mine
Nicolás Pablo Rivera Muñoz grew up in Bergen, Norway after his Chilean parents immigrated to the country in the 1980s. He rose to fame with his DIY-produced bedroom pop track Everytime. Five years after this break-through hit, he delivers the ultimate summer song for 2022.
Recently touring South America, he was struck by cumbia music, and began to absorb it into his song-writing. This resulted in Be Mine, which boasts percussion recorded in Chile. Boy pablo explains: “I’ve been obsessed with cumbia music for a while now so it became natural for me to try writing something inspired by it. It was one of those songs I didn’t expect to write, it just appeared. It’s basically a cheeky way to approach a love interest that you know has a slight interest in you. I feel like it’s a very Latino romantic thing to do.”
The combination of lyrics in English and Spanish and its fuzzy guitars further enhance the summer vibes of the song. If Europe hadn’t already been held hostage by a heatwave, this track would’ve singlehandedly brought out the sun.
Be Mine is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, boy pablo’s third! This means it’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Michelle Limanjae – Pluviophile Song
Michelle Limanjae is an Indonesian-born, Melbourne-based artist who writes, composes and produces her songs herself in her bedroom studio. She used to listen to ‘90s acts like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston and Alanis Morissette, before moving into her alt-rock and pop-punk phase, listening to the likes of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park and Nirvana.
Pluviophile Song is only her second single, but it sounds really self-confident. It’s a feel-good song with catchy hooks, combining jazzy melodies with rock instrumentation.
Michelle explains: “This song is simply about myself as a pluviophile, how I find joy and peacefulness on rainy days. I’m expressing my enjoyment through a fun, heavy and playful music arrangement in this song.”

mxmtoon – Sad Disco
With over 1 billion streams and more than 2,5 million TikTok fans, mxmtoon reaches many people. She likes to use this platform to express her feelings about subjects close to her heart. LGBTQ+ rights, the increasing violence against Asian Americans or mental health for instance.
She started her career five years ago with dreamy pop songs and introverted lyrics. So far, the prolific artist released eight EP’s, 35 singles (partly as featured artist) and an album. Her sophomore long-player Rising is on its way and will be out on 20 May.
Sad Disco is the second single to be put out ahead of it. The track has mxmtoon looking back on her previous work and analysing her own growth.
“I was 17 years old when i wrote my song Prom Dress”, she explains. “Four years later, I sat and listened to it, wondering if the lyrics and ideas still resonated with my now 21-year-old self. I decided that it did, and it also didn’t. I’d grown up since I wrote that song and realised I wanted to make something that felt current to my individual. Sad Disco was the resolution to that desire. A song built with the same bones that Prom Dress was made from, but more reflective of the growth I’ve experienced in my own life since. It’s a song meant to make you find joy in the quiet, to emulate that feeling of being alone in your bedroom, blasting music through a pair of headphones in the middle of the night. In a way, it feels like an answer to the girl who wrote Prom Dress in the first place. Serving as a reminder that she isn’t stuck on the floor with tears streaming down her face forever, but that she’ll grow up, and the loneliness she sometimes feels won’t define her. She can still choose to dance and have her own ‘sad disco’.”

Hedda Mae – Rhythm To Myself
Hedda Mae tracks have been on the Carte Blanche Music playlist for a few years in a row now, and her new single only affirms our fandom. Many of her contemporaries indulge in self-pity and produce emo-core or dark-pop in their bedrooms. But this rising talent from Norway has chosen a more cheerful path.
So far, Hedda and her collaborator Benjamin Giørtz wrapped her tunes in a nu-disco sound. New single Rhythm To Myself however leans more towards the ‘90s. Its Eric Prydz-like pumping beat almost drowns in epic synths, while sound effects, cowbells and funky guitars lighten it up.
Hedda calls the track ‘an in your face bop about being done wasting time on people who lower your spirits, when all you wanna do is have fun – and dance’. She adds: “Who says we’re dependent on others to have a good time? With Rhythm To Myself, the quirkiness and playfulness in the Hedda Mae universe are taken to a new level. Not everything has to be so serious all the time!”
Following Introducing: Hedda Mae and The Early Struggles Of A Late Millennial, she’ll complete her planned trilogy of EP’s this autumn. Also, a full album is on its way.

Stumble Steady – Transducer
Stumble Steady is essentially the one-man band of South Florida-based indie pop/alternative artist Garrett Kealer. He is the act’s frontman and songwriter, but when not writing, producing or performing, he runs his own brewing company. Beers and bops, what a great way to spend your time 😉. I haven’t got to try Kealer’s brews yet, but I can tell you his songs are tasty!
Inspired by acts such as Cage The Elephant, Gus Dapperton, The 1975 and Dayglow, Stumble Steady combines elements of indie pop, indie rock, bedroom pop, alternative, lo-fi, and folk. Transducer is his new single. With its driving guitars, bass and drums, and unorthodox synthesizers it produces a colourful soundscape. The song also features co-vocalist Cara Harpest’s debut vocals.
The idea behind the track is to turn the bad to good. Kealer explains: “When dealing with OCD it’s incredibly easy to get overwhelmed with intrusive thoughts and to get lost in self-made false realities. The idea behind Transducer was to take all of this negative energy and turn it into something positive that helps myself and others feeling a similar way.”

Tippy Balady – Soul Eater
Hailing from Dallas, Tippy Balady is currently studying popular music at the University of South Carolina. She may be a solo artist, but her music is the result of a rather permanent collaboration with producer Jason Burt. He’s been helping her shape her musical vision since 2018. Together, they created the entirety of Tippy’s discography and plan on continuing to work together in the future.
Following the release of ten of Tippy’s tracks, she just put out her first EP The Dallas Sessions. It contains her two 2021 singles German Boy and Family Dinners, and two brand-new songs. Soul Eater is my favourite of that pair. It’s a friendly-sounding song in that ‘Tippycal’ style: neo-soul with a bedroom pop vibe. Her strumming on the ukulele adds a folky element though, while the instrument also adds a latin kind of flavour.

Birdee – Monday Throwaway
Birdee Sideris is a Sydney-based artist with Chinese, Greek and Russian roots. In other words: a woman of the world by birth. Oh, and Birdee is indeed her real name.
She made her debut last year with her single Like That. Bedroom pop track Monday Throwaway is only her third single to date. It was produced and co-written by Toby Anagnostis (Butter Bath) and arranged and co-produced by Budo J. Miller. They provided her dreamy vocals with a contemporary-sounding backdrop, including lo-fi drums, out of tune guitars and a prominent bassline. Slick and catchy!
Lyrically, Monday Throwaway is about the days of being young and youthful, enjoying the young adulthood of freedom while it lasts.

Lizzie Esau – Bitter Weather
Lizzie Esau was born in London, but raised in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne within a very artistic family. Her mother was an artist and her father a musician. No surprise then, that she’d eventually follow in their footsteps.
Now an upcoming star herself, Lizzie was inspired by a wide variety of artists. Think Wolf Alice, Beabadoobee, Clairo and Arlo Parks. This explains why the five songs she released so far are impossible to be pigeonholed. Her eclectic sound includes bedroom pop, dance, funk, lo-fi and rock.
With her new single Bitter Weather, Lizzie delivers a laid back alt-pop track with hip hop influences. “It’s about prioritizing the important stuff and not obsessing about the things that don’t really matter in the end”, she says.

Express Therapy – I Knew
Best friends Jules Bédat and Dimitri Schweizer started making music together at the age of 15. After playing in an alternative rock band and as an experimental lo-fi duo, the two formed Express Therapy. They now produce what they call ‘nostalgic pop’. With the help of analogue synthesizers, lots of chorus and vocal harmonies, they mix a vintage ‘80s sound with modern influences. For fans of The Weeknd.
Express Therapy only released its first EP Twenty Something in July 2020. For their upcoming sophomore EP Prom Party Nostalgia Vol. 1, they first recorded demos in their bedrooms in Brussels. Then, the duo isolated themselves in a wooden cabin in Switzerland to finish the songs. Clearing their minds from everything that was happening (mostly pandemic wise) allowed them to fully focus on writing and recording. This escape from reality is exactly what they want their fans to experience when listening to the six tracks on the forthcoming EP.
Starting 5 November, these tracks will be released one by one on the first Friday of every month. If first single I Knew is anything to go by, I’ll mark these Fridays in my agenda.
