The Calicos – Heartbreaker
Although they never went away, The Calicosâ single Nova felt like a comeback last Spring. Two years earlier, the Belgian band followed their victory in Humoâs Rock Rally contest with three singles. Next, they took their time to fine-tune their songs and sound. Nova was the first result of their collaboration with producer Tobie Speleman (Geppetto & The Whales, Blackwave. and others).
Now, The Calicos serve up their new track Heartbreaker. I donât know if itâs because of that title, but I hear Tom Petty all over it. It may not be a lockdown song, but lyrics like âAnother day wasted on the window sillâ and âAnother day passes by and you lost countâ sure give it that atmosphere. In reality, itâs a classic sad love song, including broken hearts, unanswered love and what not. But, frontman Quinten Vermaelen tells Humo magazine, âthe violins in the outro make for a hopeful ending.â
Heartbreaker is the second single off The Calicosâ upcoming debut album, which has been pushed back to next Spring.

The Calicos – Nova
The Calicos are Quinten Vermaelen, AĂ€ron Koch, Sander Smeets, Maximilian Dobbertin, Guido Op de Beeck and Olivier Penu. Six young guns from the city of Antwerp in Belgium. In the spring of 2018, they won Humoâs Rock Rally, a two-yearly contest for rock bands, organized by magazine Humo. The band blew the jury away with their own brew of indie, rock, Americana and alternative country. Songs in the tradition of Wilco, Ryan Adams and The War On Drugs, pedal steel guitar included.
Following the singles Our House, Driftwood and Runaway Kid, the band took their time to fine-tune their songs and sound. Tobie Speleman (Geppetto & The Whales, Blackwave. and others) helped them achieve this goal. Now, they confidently announce âa killer maiden albumâ as a result. Weâll be able to check that next November.
Nova, the first single to be released ahead of that debut record is very promising indeed. The Calicos have developed into an alternative pop group with the ability to appeal to a large audience of all ages.

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Your favourites (May 2020)
In another good year for new music, I already collected over 450 great new tunes for you in my 2020 Spotify-playlist. If you generally like what you read and hear here, you can trust these to be the 450 best new songs of the year so far. Together, they form a great listening experience, stretching over 26,5 hours. But prepare for a trip through a varied musical landscape. Carte Blanche Music encourages you to listen to a wide range of genres, both inside and outside your comfort zone. For you know: the best experiences start where your comfort zone ends đ
On behalf of this blog, I select the best of the adds to my Spotify playlist, and write a recommendation for them. Last month, like every month, I recommended 10 new songs per week; 2 per working day. The ones that reached most viewers come together in the monthly Your Favourites chart. On the 1st of June, obviously, I look back upon Your Favourites in May.
I love it that Shanguyâs 14-month-old former Wildcard ToukassĂ© is still at #2 in your chart. In fact, ever since entering your Top 10 in March 2019, it has only left the ranking for 1 month. This kind of achievements give a whole new dimension to the term âhitâ. The Italian/French act was beaten to the #1 position with the smallest of margins. This month, the top position is for The Rifles frontman Joel Stoker, whose âisolation versionâ of the aptly titled Stuck Inside was my most popular recommendation among Carte Blanche Music readers. Rat Boyâs equally aptly titled Brave New World completes the Top 3.
Below, you can find all 10 of Your Favourites in the month of May. The links bring you directly to the original recommendations. Each of them features a player that lets you listen to the track via the platform of your choice. I like to make things easy for you đ. Be my guest and click around. Enjoy!
