Christon – The Story About A Boy Who Jumped Off A Cliff And Landed Softly
Itโs been some time since Christon released music under his own name. He hasnโt exactly sat still though, writing and producing for other artists. International ones like Aloe Blacc, Ziggy Marley, Lost Frequencies and Mathieu Koss, as well as Dutch colleagues such as Guus Meeuwis, Ronnie Flex and Ellen ten Damme. Also, heโs currently presenting the TV programme โDe Troubadoursโ, in which he writes a song in a day with fellow artists, based on their personal stories. And then of course, there are his other musical projects with names like Sir Notch and North [Sic].
Christonโs new single is called The Story About A Boy Who Jumped Off A Cliff And Landed Softly. This stripped down track is the title song of โDe Jongen Die Van De Klif Sprong En Zacht Terechtkwamโ, the debut novel of Dutch journalist Stefan Raatgever. This book deals with the coming of age and coming out of a 19-year-old boy. The book cover contains a sticker with the Spotify code of the song.
Raatgever interviewed Christon multiple times during his career as part of the band XYP, as front man of Rigby and as a solo artist. He became a fan and asked the singer to write a theme song for his book. This challenge was accepted.
โTo me, Christon is one of the best songwriters in the Netherlandsโ, Raatgever explains. โHe often deploys his talents for others, but Iโm happy he sang this song himself. Iโm proud of the beautiful way he put the theme of my first book to music. Itโs a wonderful, Johnny Cash-like track.โ
Christon, who already produced a soundtrack to his own debut thriller, โAdamโ, adds he tried to stick as much to Raatgeverโs story as possible. โI recorded this song in an intimate, acoustic setting. It incorporates both the struggle and the acceptance of the main character.โ

Christon – Closer To A New Day
Two years ago, when I just started this blog, one of the first tracks I recommended was the then-new single Perfect World by Dutch singer-songwriter Christon Kloosterboer. Later in 2017, he released the EPโs Towns and Cities. In 2018, however, he mainly composed and produced for other (EDM) artists. Also, he released tracks under clever anagram aliases like North [Sic] and Sir Notch. The latter, especially, is well-known to the Carte Blanche Music readers, as his summery single Gimme That Sunshine ended up third in Your Favourites (2018).
For 2019, the artist dusted off his proper name. Throughout the year, he will release new songs as Christon. Closer To A New Day, a track he wrote in Nashville with Emery Dobyns, is the first of them. Itโs about a boy and a girl who drive off in their car at sunset, leaving their troubles behind, heading for the sun. An epic song that references Coldplay, both musically and in voice.
Donโt be surprised if this ends up in a movie, TV series or commercial one day.

Christon – Younger Than Before
Christon Kloosterboer recently released his solo debut album Towns & Cities, that unites his EPโs Towns and Cities. He recorded the tracks in Nashville and wrote them with the fact in mind, that he should be able to reproduce them on stage with a loop station, and a loop station only.
If this is a new phenomenon for you: a loop station is a piece of equipment which allows you to record an instrument, then play a loop of this recording while you record another instrument. This way you can (re)build a song layer by layer. And because each individual layer can be switched on and off, the artist has the ability to create variety within the music or even improvise. But basically, what you see on stage, is one artist and one loop station. Period.
I can hear you think: isnโt that incredibly dull? To be honest, that was my thought exactly. But after seeing Christon live during the club tour he just completed, I know that the knowledge the artist is โliving on the edgeโ while conducting his technical tour de force, creates a sense of tension that is felt by the audience as well.
Christon finished his set with my favourite track off his album. A song about the relationship with his father.
Christon – Where Do We Go From Here
Well, I was right, wasnโt I? ๐ . Christon is about to follow-up his first EP Towns (with the singles SOS Warning, Bonfire, Icarus and Perfect World) with a second EP, Cities. Like Towns, Cities will contain six tracks, the first of which is now released as his new single.
Where Do We Go From Here is a modern day protest song, addressing the subject of refugee problems. The song is about a white Western boy who is in a secret relation with a Muslim girl. They must flee to be able to be safe with each other, but where to?
The two EPโs together will form Christonโs solo debut album Towns And Cities (bet you didnโt see that title coming ๐ ), which will be out 31 March. Both digitally, on cd and vinyl.
Christon feat. Maxime Barlag – Perfect World
If you never heard of Christon Kloosterboer before, youโre not to blame (yet). Heโs a Dutch singer-songwriter who had his share of success in the Netherlands with his band Rigby. While the band is in hibernation, Christon lends his composing talents to befriended artists and EDM producers, as well as writing music for commercials and tv series. In the meantime he started a solo career.
Last year he recorded his solo debut album Towns & Cities, due for release later this spring, in Nashville, USA and Hannover, Germany. The first six songs off the album will be released digitally tomorrow on the EP Towns (suggesting another EP called Cities will follow later). This first EP will feature the singles SOS Warning, Bonfire and Icarus as well as three album tracks. One of them, Perfect World (not a single, but a New Year present), features Maxime Barlag, the front woman of Mister & Mississippi (a band certainly worth checking as well!).
This is the clip in full effect. I love it!
(update 15 January: because of the positive reception, it has been decided Perfect World will be released as a proper single after all)

Sir Notch feat. The Tuten Brothers – Summerโs Waiting For You
For quite some time, Sir Notchโs identity was something of a mystery. Pictures of a guy with a huge smiley popped over his head left a lot to guess. By now, we know Sir Notch is a project (and an anagram) of Christon. Once the frontman of popular Dutch band Rigby, he became truly successful (and happy) when he stepped out of the spotlight.
In 2021, his main focus is on writing and producing music for other artists or for film and TV. He already wrote over 500 songs for different artists in multiple genres. To mention but a few: Christon worked with Aloe Blacc, Ziggy Marley, Lost Frequencies, Hardwell, Dash Berlin, Sam Feldt and Mathieu Koss.
Besides that, he releases a song as Sir Notch from time to time. And not unsuccessfully. In 2018, he wrote and recorded the track Gimme That Sunshine for the summer campaign of juice brand Appelsientje. A year later, it won him a prestigious Buma Award for the best song in a commercial. My little write-up about the track is one of the all-time best read posts in the 5-year existence of Carte Blanche Music.
Will Christon pull it off again with his new single Summerโs Waiting For You? By the sound of it he just released his next hit. The track, which credits Nashville country singers The Tuten Brothers, is another easy on the ears dance-pop banger. Itโs a song of hope as well. โWe washed our hands and cancelled our plansโ, but hey, summerโs waiting for you.
