Wildcard (week 34):
Blonde Diamond – We Just Wanna Dance
Even though they donât have any huge hits to their name (yet), you may still know Vancouver-based band Blonde Diamond. Theyâve supported bands like Portugal. The Man, Broken Social Scene, Bishop Briggs and Chromeo on tours across Canada, Europe, Australia, the US and India. The alt-pop groupâs eagerly awaited debut album Magnetic Strangers will be out on 23 September.
We Just Wanna Dance is the fourth single to be released ahead of the long-player. Slowly bouncing, itâs danceable indeed, but it also has twangy guitars that remind of âTwin Peaksâ and spoken parts that couldâve been taken from a Grace Jones track. All in all, itâs great track to whet our appetite for the forthcoming album.
Blonde Diamondâs We Just Wanna Dance is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. Itâll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Blonde Diamond – Red Flags
Even though they donât have any huge hits to their name (yet), you may still know Vancouver-based band Blonde Diamond. Theyâve supported bands like Portugal. The Man, Broken Social Scene, Bishop Briggs and Chromeo on tours across Canada, Europe, Australia, the US and India. The alt-pop groupâs eagerly awaited debut album is expected in 2022.
Their full-lengthâs first single sheds light on abusive relationships. âRed Flags is a retrospective of moments leading up to the realization that a seemingly fairytale romance has slowly evolved into a dark, twisted, and manipulative strongholdâ, says lead singer Alexis Young. âIt’s the moment of clarity: realizing that walking away is stronger than trying to tough it out. And more importantly, understanding that you cannot try to fix someone else at the expense of your own well-being.â
With its energetic drums, sparkly keys, dreamy guitars, slinky bass and intimate vocals, Red Flags is a trademark Blonde Diamond track.

Haim – Right Now
Since their acclaimed 2013 debut album Days Are Gone, that produced (radio) hits like Forever, Donât Save Me, Falling, The Wire and (especially) If I Could Change Your Mind, the sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim have mainly worked with other artists. They played in the video for Chromeoâs Old 45âs, collaborated with Bastille, Calvin Harris, Brandon Flowers, M83, and made a âremixâ of Cause Iâm A Man by Tame Impala (which was in fact a version of the song, sung by the Haim sisters, so itâs a pity they didnât call it Cause Haim A Man or Haim Impala ?).
In the meantime, other bands stood up to (try and) steal their glory. Most recently The Aces with their wonderful track Physical. Just in time, Haim announced their new album. Something To Tell You will be released on 7 July. Even better timed, they just put out the first track. Or, more accurately, a live version of the album track Right Now. A slowly building song, rounding off with a confident âThatâs how you fuckinâ do it!â
The official first single will follow soon, on 3 May already.
