Circa Waves – Jacqueline
In recent years, most radio stations banned guitars from their airwaves, consciously or not. As a consequence, numerous bands that started out as rock acts, softened their sound. Less guitars, more synths, poppier melodies. Who could blame them?
Circa Waves are one of those bands, and the change brought grist to their mill. Their concerts are one big party, just like their recent recorded output. The bandâs single Jacqueline is further testimony of that. A new stand-out song in their repertoire, itâs a fun track to sing and dance along with.
Jacqueline is the first single to be released off Circa Wavesâ fourth album Sad Happy, which will be out on 13 March 2020.

Circa Waves – Be Somebody Good
Ahead of their third album Whatâs It Like Over There?, Liverpool band Circa Waves gives us not one, but two new singles. One is called Movies, but I personally like the other one better.
Be Somebody Good is a dynamic song, with easy-going verses and a rather explosive chorus, that brings Twenty One Pilots to mind (which I mean to be a compliment).

Circa Waves – Different Creatures
T-Shirt Weather and Stuck In My Teeth promoted Circa Waves from âjust another band from Liverpoolâ to the Premier League of British music. They got the band from pubs to festivals en took their debut album Young Chasers to the top 10 of the British charts. So what could the band wish for as far as their second album was concerned?
Well, in interviews, frontman Kieran Shudall has said he wanted to make something with more meaning. It appears they achieved that goal with their latest offering Different Creatures. On the albumâs title track the band even gets political. Itâs about the UK government limiting the amount of Syrian refugees allowed into the country. A heavy message wrapped in a pretty poppy packing.
Elsewhere on the album the music hits just as hard as the words.
Wildcard (week 31):
Kula Shaker – Waves
Kula Shaker have reformed before, but things are different now. This time around, all four original members of the bandâs classic line-up reunited for the first time since 1999. Yes indeed, keyboard wizard Jay Darlington has returned from a decade with Oasis and various Gallaghers. His comeback signals a restoration of the bandâs classic sound as well. A very, very welcome return!
Waves is the first single from Kula Shakerâs upcoming 7th studio album. A relentless burst of excitement, itâs an upbeat song of optimism, with a stadium-ready na-na-na part. Unmistakably, it features Darlingtonâs swirling Hammond organ riffs from the get-go. The track is further powered by the bandâs legendary rhythm section, Alonza Bevan (bass) and Paul Winter-Hart (drums). Obviously, the euphoric lyrics are written and sung by front man Crispian Mills.
All in all, this tune brings the bandâs best-known hit Hush to mind. It deserves to score big, like the band did so many times in their early years, circa 25 years ago..
This week, Kula Shaker makes Waves on Carte Blanche Music as our new Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Vistas – Start Again
Vistas are a Scottish trio, featuring Prentice Robertson (vocals) , Dylan Rush (guitar) and Jamie Law (bass). Sharing a love for acts like The Strokes and Two Door Cinema Club, they decided to form a band of their own. Soon, they played sold-out tours and supported artists like The Wombats, Circa Waves and The Kooks.
Last year, they released their debut album Everything Changes In The End. Their empty agenda left them enough time to write new material. Unfortunately, Robertson suffered from a writerâs block. He decided to write a song about the situation, which has now been released as the bandâs first material of 2021.
The singer explains: “Start Again was one of the first songs I wrote after I took a bit of time off from writing. It is essentially a song about having writerâs block and the feelings that come along with worrying where your next idea is going to come from. I think getting this song down really helped to unstick any writerâs block I was having. It oiled the wheels of everything that would follow on from this track.”
It doesnât take much imagination to hear a post-lockdown anthem in the song. Fresh and energetic, itâs an uplifting slice of indie-pop/rock.

Vistas – Everything Changes In The End
These must be extra-frustrating times for Scotland based Vistas. They just released their debut album, full of perfect indie summer anthems, but have nowhere to play them.
Vocalist Prentice Robertson, guitarist Dylan Rush and bassist Jamie Law formed the band at school and developed a tight bond while fawning over records from The Strokes, Two Door Cinema Club and more. Theyâve made their name by gigging tirelessly across the UK. Sold-out tours and support slots alongside the likes of The Wombats, Circa Waves and The Kooks. Their live shows generated plenty of word of mouth and, ultimately, a loyal fan base. The singles the band released since 2016 racked up over 40 million plays on Spotify alone.
Finally, they released their debut album Everything Changes In The End. The title track is the trioâs new single. They have this to say about it: âIt’s just about being there for your friends and realising that stuff might not be great at the moment, but hopefully in time will work itself out. Essentially it’s the message that we wanted to put throughout the whole record, so that’s why it’s the opening and title-track.â
