Dagny – Coulda Woulda Shoulda
Ever since releasing her debut single Backbeat in October 2015, Norwegian songstress Dagny Sandvik has been promising us an album. However, she hasnât delivered yet and keeps the excitement going. So far, she delivered the Ultraviolet EP in 2016, and four years on, hereâs her second EP Strangers/Lovers. Together, the two hold 11 songs, which could be considered an album. Fair enough then đ
On her website however, the six tracks she just released are described as âSide A of my debut album Strangers/Loversâ. I canât wait for the B-side! Two of these tracks, Come Over and Somebody, have previously been released as singles. But the best track in my opinion is Coulda Woulda Shoulda. They donât come any catchier than this. Wait for this girl to become one of the future global pop stars.

Dagny – Come Over
In October 2015, Dagny Sandvik made a surprise entrance in the music industry with her upbeat and contagious single Backbeat. It accumulated over 40 million streams on Spotify alone. In no-time, the Norwegian singer turned into a real pop princess, with a total of over 450 million streams to her name.
Ever since that first hit, weâre promised a debut album. But unless numerous single releases, she keeps putting off that albumâs release. It could easily have been a Best Of by now… However, her new single comes with a thrilling message: âDagny has plenty of exciting plans for 2020, finally releasing her long-awaited debut album.â
Come Over is a euphoric electronic pop track with a high feel-good factor. This is what she has to say about it: âThe song is a pretty self-explanatory, cheeky little thing. It celebrates the âmeet and greetâ phase of a (potential) relationship. Let me put it like this: if you meet someone youâre intrigued by, then Come Over is your fearless, ballsy and excited invitation to get to know ‘emâŠâ

Wildcard (week 43):
Dagny – Love You Like That
The ways of the music world are inscrutable sometimes. Take Dagny Sandvik. Her debut single Backbeat should have been a huge hit upon its first release in October 2015, after the very credible full-band show she did at Eurosonic Noorderslag in January 2016 or at the latest when it was re-released in May 2016. But somehow, however radio-friendly, her electronic pop didnât get the media attention it deserved.
True, three of the singerâs singles appeared in the European Border Breakers Chart, but radio support hasnât yet been broad enough to really set the chart on fire.
Iâm confident her new single will do the trick. Itâs currently at the very doorstep of the EBBC Top 100, with a #1 position in this weekâs Tips by Country chart. Love You Like That is another slice of perfectly crafted commercial dance pop, featuring Dagnyâs silky voice and beautiful harmonies. The dynamic structure of the song keeps it exciting throughout its full 3 minutes.
In other exciting news: the track is this weekâs Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
PS: Dagny, dear: Iâm completely ready for your debut album thatâs over two years in the makingâŠ
Dagny – Backbeat
In October 2015 Norwegian singer Dagny Sandvik released her single Backbeat. By that time she had been living in London for some time yet, where she worked on her debut album with other songwriters. In January last year I saw her show at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival. There still was no album, but she played a lot of tracks off it (presumably). One even catchier than the other. After that performance I made Backbeat the track of the week in my radio show and it ended up as one of my favourites of 2016.
That year, Dagny also released Foolâs Gold (a duet with BĂžrns) and the Ultraviolet EP, all surrounded with little promotion. Hopefully all this is about to change, as Backbeat has yet to be released properly in the UK. The date has been pushed back several times already, but has now been set at 10 February. Hopefully it will be a big hit as yet, triggering a re-release in other countries. Click and enjoy!

Ellis Newman – Leaving The Party
Within Europe, the best pop music is probably made in Scandinavia. Polished pop, like Dagnyâs or Sigridâs, or pop with more of an edge, like RoseeLuâs or Tove Loâs. For the 2.0 version of herself, young Dutch singer, songwriter and producer Ellis Sportel draws inspiration from the latter category. She uses her catchy songs to escape daily life, puts emotional and personal lyrics into something to dance to.
In 2021, she came to the scene with three of her own songs and a few collaborations, using the Ellis Newman moniker. If her new single is anything to go by, 2022 will be her year. Leaving The Party has this edgier sound, resulting in a darker, heavier production, minor melodies and even house influences. Call it a party anthem for introverts.
The singer says about the track: âI never really related to the âput your hands upâ kind of songs. Since parties can overwhelm me a lot, Iâve always wanted an anti-party song. I donât know a lot of songs like that so I thought Iâd write one from my point of view.â
âIf you’re looking for me, I’ll be leaving the partyâ, Newman sings. But as far as Iâm concerned, the party has just started, and – maybe to her own discomfort – Ellis is the one whoâs being celebrated.

Beks – The Thing About Us
She used to be the frontwoman/guitarist of all-girl punk band Rackett, and drummer of Bec & Ben. Now, Sydneyâs Rebecca Callander is on a songwriters journey as Beks. Her new single The Thing About Us is a catchy pop tune. Itâll make fans of Kylie Minogue and Dagny beg for more.
The singer explains: âI wrote this with my friends Cam Nacson (Sad Boii) and Tamika Nacson (Xira) during a songwriting session for my mixtape in October 2020. This song encapsulates the feeling of being in love and then out of love with your best friend. Your best friend that you party and wake up hungover with and then realise that youâve crossed a line of no return, blurred the boundaries and youâre desperate to find a way back. The thing about us is there was never an âusâ, it was only ever âyou and Iâ.â
The mixtape Beks mentioned is a project sheâs been working on for the last months. Itâll feature 12 tracks she wrote and produced with people like Jim Eliot (Ladyhawke, E^ST), and Kim Moyes (The Presets). Her debut mixtape is set for release mid-2021.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and donât want to please everybody at the same time. Weâre here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, â80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this yearâs list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last yearâs tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. Youâll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, youâll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button đ.

Genes – Super Single
In recent times, the funky, slapping bass made its full return in pop music. Weâve got the comeback of â80s influenced disco to thank for that. As you couldâve guessed, hereâs another one!
If youâre into the likes of Carly Rae Jepsen and Dagny, do yourself the favour to listen to Genes as well. Only four singles into her career, she already sounds like one of the revelations of Australian pop. Her fourth track so far is easily her best. Itâs a Super Single. But thatâs not what the song is about.
She says: âItâs fun, itâs not taking itself seriously, and itâs carefree – exactly how my life has been the last year. Iâve had the best 12 months of my life, and theyâve been spent completely single. I love having crushes and mutual fun with no commitment. I love the independence.â
With its punchy beat, groovy rhythms, and electronic touches, Super Single by Genes is an infectious and upbeat ditty. Sure to make even the stiffest amongst us move.
