Wildcard (week 5):
Dancer – Wrap Around Me
Five years ago, Chris Quinton (CQ), Ben Graham, Bryce Crocombe and Josh Rea formed Dancer. At Carte Blanche Music, we’ve been supporters of the Aussie band from the start. You can read all about their earlier releases here.
Since 2021’s EP Fears, things have gone quiet around the band. That’s because these past years have been a time of emotional turbulence, burnout, and the band’s unexpected label departure. That’s why recording new material has taken three years. Next up: a new EP called All My Best Friends, which details a raw exploration of friendship, resilience, and self-discovery. It’s both a tribute to their bond and a reflection of the struggles they faced in the process.
But first, here’s its first single Wrap Around Me. The band started working on the song in 2019, and thanks to producer Luke O’Dea, they’ve finally been able to finish it. Sounding like The Killers in their heyday, this is probably the best thing Dancer have done so far. The track explores themes of ego, self-doubt, and a deep yearning for connection, marking a bold new chapter for the band, who are a trio now.
Wrap Around Me by Dancer is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Dancer – It Matters
After making a low-key entry in the music business in 2020, Australian band Dancer started all over again this year under the wings of a proper record label. They now release the quartet’s 6-track debut-EP Fears. It features the band’s debut single Dreamer, a totally revamped version of Show Me The Way (re-named The Lights) and this year’s Fears. The other songs are brand-new.
No EP or album release nowadays without a ‘focus track’. In this case, It Matters is it. Good choice! It Matters is an upbeat song that sounds like is was made with (alternative) radio in mind. Another one of the band’s addictive tracks, it has a contagious melody and powerful lyrics.
The band say about the song: “Each of us have our own expression, our own beliefs, mistakes and pain. And all of it matters. This song is a call out to the people who feel like their stories don’t matter. Every person matters and is worth it.”

Dancer – Fears
After publisher Snowhill Songs did a great job putting Aussie quartet Dancer on the map, a label stepped in to – hopefully – finish the job. Mirror Records is part of Mirror Group, who manage Gang Of Youths and launched the career of Middle Kids. Sounds like a good home for the lads.
As happens more often, the label decided to start from scratch and pull all available music from the streaming platforms. Recently, it re-released last year’s Dreamer as the band’s official debut single with them. Dancer’s second single however, is brand-new. In line with its title – Fears – it has a frantic, almost hypnotic beat that adds suspense to the song. Lyrically, it explores the themes of fear and the relationship our world has with the concept.
Both Dreamer and Fears will appear on Dancer’s debut EP, which is due out on 3 December. It’ll contain a total of 6 tracks. One of these is a new version of last year’s Show Me The Way, which also disappeared from the internet since I wrote about it.

Dancer – Show Me The Way
Exactly a year ago, in October 2019, I travelled through Australia for a month. Facebook reminds me of that trip on a daily basis, and it fills me with nostalgia. One of the reasons to spend the holiday there, was the musical climate. In Australia, musical talent is as widespread as eucalyptus trees and koalas.
Dancer (Chris Quinton, Ben Graham, Bryce Crocombe and Josh Rea) are a good example. Even though they’ve only just begun, one can hear the quality in the few songs they’ve released so far. And the diversity, as well.
Less than two months ago, I introduced you to the band’s first proper single Dreamer. A euphoric and uplifting song with huge choruses. With their new single, Dancer show us their softer side. Show Me The Way is a subtle song, that builds up to an epic high, before cutting back again. Both Dreamer and Show Me The Way will appear on their upcoming first EP, which will contain two up-tempo and two mellow tunes.
Note from their label: ‘Dancer have just been away on a writing retreat and have come out with a bunch of brilliant demos’. In other words: the future looks bright for this promising new band!

Dancer – Dreamer
Chris Quinton (CQ), Ben Graham, Bryce Crocombe and Josh Rea are Dancer. A brand-new band from the industrial beach town of Newcastle, Australia. They met in their younger years and even spent five years writing, recording and experimenting with songs, without even forming a band. But that’s a thing of the past. Earlier this year, amidst the chaos and the shut down of the music industry, the four decided to formally start a musical outfit, and named it Dancer.
The first song they put out was Fever, but Dreamer is their first proper single. A euphoric and uplifting song that sounds like a mix of The Killers and early Everything Everything. Think punchy indie-pop with huge choruses minus the falsetto. In other words: an epic radio song, that’s already been picked up by Australia’s alternative radio station Triple J Unearthed.
A friend of the band described listening to Dreamer as “…like riding down a giant hill without a helmet!” I’m already curious what else we’ll find underneath that hill. Hint: Dancer will release their first EP in the last quarter of the year.

Royal Republic – Fireman And Dancer
Royal Republic was formed in 2007 in Sweden. Since then, they’ve been a fixture on my radio playlists. Underwear, Everybody Wants To Be An Astronaut, When I See You Dance With Another, Baby, Uh Huh, Kung Fu Lovin’… I played them a lot (and loud!).
Fireman And Dancer is the band’s addictive new single. Another king-sized tune with riffy guitars, this time complete with a saxophone and a vocal flanger effect that make you wish the 80’s had never left the building. Looking forward to their forthcoming album Club Majesty!
