Eckhardt & The House – Humans
The Voyager Golden Records are two gramophone records that are on board of both Voyager spacecraft that were launched by NASA in 1977. The records contain sounds and images that have been selected to reflect the diversity of life and culture on Earth, and are meant for any intelligent alien life form or for future people who may find them. Apparently, NASA thinks these aliens will have record players…
Anyway, one of the songs on The Voyager Golden Records is a Peruvian folk song, which has now been sampled by Eckhardt & The House on their new single Humans. A hypnotising song that sounds like Timmy Thomas’ Why Can’t We Live Together with a Madchester feel, akin of The Stone Roses’ Fools Gold. Soulful, funky and cool.
“We are humans, living creatures on the planet earth. We are children of the sun, waiting for you to come.”
Eckhardt & The House – Funeral
For those who grew up in the 1980s (like me), the current eighties revival must be music to their ears. Thanks to the use of vintage instruments and sounds, many contemporary songs have something instantly recognizable.
Take Eckhardt & The House, for instance, who’s If She Cannot Talk and Put Me In A Cape I recommended here before. They just released their twelfth single Funeral and I can’t help but hearing a mash-up of Falco’s Der Kommissar and Tom Tom Club’s Wordy Rappinghood in it. Which were brilliant and revolutionary songs, by the way.
Funeral is another slickly produced funk pop tune. At the same time however, lyrics like “Let’s have a funeral for all the sad news, let’s bury it all” and “We read the papers, read the facts, they bomb the desert, we pay tax” show social engagement (and even cynicism) as well.

Eckhardt & The House – Put Me In A Cape
The higher the tempo in Eckhardt & The House’s music, the faster their star begins to rise. Good news for them then, that their new single is an up-tempo affair. Their most energetic song to date, to be exact.
In recent months, Eckhardt & The House developed a danceable indie sound, based on elements from pop to avant-garde to disco-funk. However, they managed to turn these influences into a unique sound of their own. Remember their great single If She Cannot Talk? This one is even better.
More than ever, Put Me In A Cape sounds like it’s the eighties all over again, and I’d be the last to vote against that. The song is full of retro ingredients, wrapped in smooth, contemporary production. Not only made for playlists, but sure to become a live staple as well!
Eckhardt & The House – If She Cannot Talk
Eckhardt & The House is the brain child of singer, drummer, producer and actor Rik Elstgeest. He built a fine career in the last two years, on the back of his first eight singles and debut album, which were full of laid-back pop tracks. But now, it’s time for a new sound!
Eckhardt & The House 2.0 has a more up-tempo and danceable indie sound, without losing its charm. In first single If She Cannot Talk you can hear Talking Heads influences (especially in the instrumental break), as well as a touch of The 1975. What’s not to like about that?

Your Favourites (2018)
Happy New Year from ‘all of us’ (that’s me) at Carte Blanche Music! Like the past year, 2019 will undoubtedly be full of musical surprises. Especially when you’re open to let some new sounds into your life. And if you don’t have the time to find them yourself, please let me help! Simply follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist on Spotify for daily updates of great new music, or bookmark this blog.
Carte Blanche Music doesn’t intend to list all new releases. On the contrary: I make a strict selection and only give you the best new music, twice a day. Since last year, I restrict the number of recommendations to two per day: one around 9AM, and the other around 7PM (CET). This limitation provided for a 35% increase of the number of views per post in 2018.
This brings us to the question: which of my recommendations have been viewed the most throughout the year? In other words: what are your favourites of 2018? The answer is: a totally different set of songs than my year-end list, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018 😉 and that’s totally fine!
Just a few statistics to kick things off:
- Your Favourites (2018) contain nine songs that were in Your Favourites (2017) already, and apparently stuck with you
- The full Top 3 of your list contains Dutch artists (in total, there are 21 tracks by acts from the Netherlands. Dutch fans are the best)
- 36% of the visitors are Dutch (like myself… Hi mom!)
- 19% of the visitors are Americans, 16% are from the UK; a total of 87 nationalities have come by in 2018 (dank je wel, thanks, merci, obrigado, danke schön, etc.!)
- 26% of all traffic comes from direct searches for specific titles, so Carte Blanche Music also seems to have an archive function
- Other important referrers are Facebook (22%), and Twitter (13%)
- Impressive: the relatively high position of Mokono’s debut single Signs, the final Carte Blanche Music Wildcard of 2018
Okay, I can hear you thinking: ‘Don’t bore us, get to the chorus’, so here they are… Just two more things: all of these great songs (plus 1.000 more) are in my Carte Blanche Music 2018 playlist, and the links below direct you to my original recommendations for more information. Now, enjoy the music! Read More →
Werner’s Weekly (week 36)
For most of us, the summer holidays are over. If you, too, enjoyed some nice weeks off, you may have a feeling you missed out on a lot of great new music. And indeed, you did 😉.
But catching up is easier than ever these days. I’ve continued to update my ‘best of 2018’ playlist Carte Blanche Music on a daily basis, so if you follow it and sort it by ‘recently added’ (or through the calendar icon on your desktop app), the latest new songs are automatically displayed at the top of the list. You’re welcome!
Last week, I added new music by Jonathan Jeremiah, Muse, Nothing But Thieves, The Struts feat. Kesha, Twenty One Pilots, The Wombats and others. Your favourites (February 2018)
I think checking the Carte Blanche Music statistics at the end of each month is pretty exciting. It feels like getting my report at school. Or in fact, it feels like the artists I wrote about getting their reports. I’m glad to be able to share with you that many of them graduated gloriously!
Below you’ll find the ten blogs that were read the most during the month of February. Great to see so many emerging artists in your Top 10, and also note the number of independently released tracks in the list. Another remarkable song is TANA’s Leave Away, a track that was released exactly one year ago, but attracted enough viewers last month to re-enter this overview.
I’m really grateful you allow me to help you discover so much great new music. Thanks for that!
