Haim – Want You Back
When I told you I can’t wait for Haim’s second album, I actually wanted to say to the girls: I want you back. So, the title of their new single proper, the swift follow-up to last week’s teaser track Right Now, couldn’t have been more appropriate.
Want You Back has just been released and precedes the band’s new album Something To Tell You, that will come out 7 July.
Haim – Right Now
Since their acclaimed 2013 debut album Days Are Gone, that produced (radio) hits like Forever, Don’t Save Me, Falling, The Wire and (especially) If I Could Change Your Mind, the sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim have mainly worked with other artists. They played in the video for Chromeo’s Old 45’s, collaborated with Bastille, Calvin Harris, Brandon Flowers, M83, and made a ‘remix’ of Cause I’m A Man by Tame Impala (which was in fact a version of the song, sung by the Haim sisters, so it’s a pity they didn’t call it Cause Haim A Man or Haim Impala ?).
In the meantime, other bands stood up to (try and) steal their glory. Most recently The Aces with their wonderful track Physical. Just in time, Haim announced their new album. Something To Tell You will be released on 7 July. Even better timed, they just put out the first track. Or, more accurately, a live version of the album track Right Now. A slowly building song, rounding off with a confident “That’s how you fuckin’ do it!”
The official first single will follow soon, on 3 May already.
Tilly Louise – Baggy T-Shirt
Tilly Louise, from Liverpool, is a self professed fan-girl of local acts like Zuzu and Pixey. Well, that makes two of us then. Furthermore, she takes inspiration from the likes of Paramore, Haim and Blondie. Over the years Louise played multiple sold out shows. Both headline gigs and opening for her heroes such as Cassia and Fickle Friends.
Baggy T-Shirt is only her fourth single, and I think it’s a banger. Followers may already know the song, for it’s been part of Louise’s setlist for some time now. It proved to be a fan-favourite way ahead of its formal release. This is in part thanks to it gaining popular buzz on TikTok, with fans creating fun videos to the track.
Self-produced and self-recorded, Baggy T-Shirt encapsulates everything great about indie guitar-pop, combining strong ‘90s nostalgia with alternative rock influence.

Hollie Col – Seasick
Hollie Col is a Sydney-based singer-songwriter whose loveable charm translates into instantly likeable songs. Heavily inspired by artists such as Taylor Swift, Maggie Rogers and Haim, she makes guitar-infused pop. Her self-directed music videos, emphasis on storytelling and LGBTQIA+ representation already brought her an army of fans. That’s likely to grow further with the release of her latest track.
Following her previous single Reruns, her new song Seasick is co-written and produced by Dylan Nash (Dean Lewis and Angus & Julia Stone). It has a timeless quality to it and has an ultra memorable chorus.
Hollie says about it: “I wrote this song with Dylan Nash about a back and forth relationship, and how nauseating it can feel to be stuck on someone you just want to get over. I think it’s almost comical how often we lie to ourselves about our own feelings or get frustrated at ourselves for crushing over someone we do NOT want to be crushing over.”

Bash! – In My Head
Based in Southampton, Bash! are a quirky quintet that formed in 2018 at Solent University. Amanda Bashmakova is the lead singer and namesake of the punchy pop band. She’s joined by Miles Hobbs (bass), Joe Burgess (guitars, producer), Angus McIntyre (drums), and John Burdfield (keyboards). The five of them live together in a five-bed house share. Only last year, they started releasing tracks, which ended up on their debut EP So Brokenhearted.
2022 is off to a great start with the brand-new tune In My Head. It was written by the band themselves and recorded in their own house. Sounds great though. Who needs studios anyway nowadays? This could have been a Haim song, but more cheesy. And that’s meant to be a compliment. Imagine a combination of lively bass, punchy drums, striking guitars and sweeping synths. Or better: listen below.
Speaking about the song’s lyrics, lead singer Amanda Bashmakova explains: “After moving from Latvia to the UK, I struggled to find love due to the language barrier. The wrong words fell out of my mouth; I realised I could never truly convey my innermost feelings.”
Bash! have previously supported ground-breaking new artists such as Ashniko, Inhaler, Bloxx, Girli, and Husky Loops. Now, it’s time for them to get booked as headliners.

Lou Ella & Shae Brock – Snake In The Garden
Making timeless music is a real craft. Fleetwood Mac is one of those bands that know the drill. No wonder many contemporary artists are fans. Acts like Haim, Little Green Cars, Lissie, Liv and many others don’t exactly make a secret of this fascination. We can now add a new act to that list.
Lou Ella & Shae Brock are two Los Angeles-based artists, who met online. They co-wrote their occasional collaboration Snake In The Garden with Mike Kamerman from Smallpools, who produced it as well. This resulted in a smooth and (radio) friendly indie-pop tune.
Lyrically, things are a little harsher though. Snake In The Garden talks about betrayal, knowing who your enemies are and growing. Lou Ella explains: “Don’t always trust people who come into your life even if all seems ok. Whether it’s romance or friendship, we’ve all been betrayed or hurt by someone we’ve trusted. You come out stronger but it still hurts.”

Shannen James – Separate Ways
Shannen James is an artist-on-the-rise from Melbourne, Australia. Her 2020 EP Arrows collected all five singles she released the 12 months before, adding one extra song.
Separate Ways is her second single of the year, so far. It’s an energetic, percussive, groove-oriented guitar track with a bright and poppy sound. An alt-pop song by the book, that leaves plenty of room for James’s velvety-smooth vocals. Extremely infectious in a Haim kind of way.
The singer-songwriter says of the track: “Separate Ways is a candid take on when relationships dissipate and for whatever reason run their course. We all make connections with people that after some time you both kind of know that you’re starting to drift apart. It’s nothing to be bitter about. More so just being able to look back on those memories fondly and appreciate what you had with that person.”

The Deep Blue – Jealous Sea
Manchester has always been a source of great pop music, and it continues to be so in 2021. Please meet the next band to cement the city’s reputation: The Deep Blue. They’re a three-piece that spent the lockdown writing and recording their debut EP. All of its tracks are set to be released throughout this year.
Jealous Sea is their very first, and very pleasant single. Just like other recent bands such as Haim and Soda Blonde, The Deep Blue are clearly influenced by Fleetwood Mac. A great place to start, as far as I’m concerned. However, the trio also throws a pinch of Taylor Swift into the mix. This results in a summer-y track with luscious harmonies and shimmering melodies, which blend indie, folk and pop.
Talking about this very promising introductory single, The Deep Blue explain: “You know that feeling: when you’ve lost a little bit of love for yourself and you see that person who has everything you’ve ever wanted. In a world of endless scrolling through the lives of others, it can be difficult to keep your head above the jealous sea. We are all in danger of slipping under. You’re not alone; sometimes we all want to be somebody else. Here’s a song to get you through and dance the green away.”

Wildcard (week 26)
Baxtr – Bloom
In the 30 years I’ve made radio shows, each of my programmes consisted for at least 50% of female voices. I didn’t even select them on purpose. Much of my favourite music appeared to be sung by women, simple as that. I’m very happy female artists gain more ground on festivals and radio playlists nowadays. There’s so much talent out there!
Take brand-new, all-female alt-pop trio Baxtr from London for instance. Floss Mackintosh (vocals, guitar), Bash Powers (guitar, keys, backing vocals) and Keiko Jackson (drums, backing vocals) have been close friends of 10 years. They shared the vision of being in a band together for a long time, and finally made it real.
To me, Bloom is one of the best debut singles of the past years. A euphoric banger, inspired by ‘80s pop songs, with added guitars and hooks of the catchiest kind. Shamelessly danceable, flamboyant, and empowering guitar pop in the best Haim tradition.
‘Your summer is coming soon’, they sing, and I’m sure that goes for the Baxtr girls themselves as well. About to ‘bloom’ in no-time, the band gave their career a hell of a kickstart with this first single. To ensure this gem won’t be overlooked, Bloom by Baxtr will appear here prominently for a full week as the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
In the Wildcards 2020 playlist you’ll find all of this year’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcards so far.
