Hozier (feat. Mavis Staples) – Nina Cried Power
With only one smash hit to his name (Take Me To Church has been streamed over 860 million times on Spotify alone), Irish singer-songwriter Hozier may appear to be a one-day fly. Truth is, that he influenced so many other artists with his infectious mix of blues, soul and gospel, that he made his definitive mark on this decennium’s music.
The title track off his EP Nina Cried Power is Hozier’s new single. It features legendary American soul/gospel singer Mavis Staples, and Booker T. Jones on the organ. The track names iconic artists, activists and other people who fought for human rights. Among them Joni Mitchell, John Lennon, James Brown and Nina Simone, who is name-checked in the song’s title.

Minerva Daisy – Something Strange
Minerva Hibbert is an independent 20-year-old alternative pop singer based in Manchester, who goes by the stage name Minerva Daisy. Born to a very creative family, she took up piano lessons at the age of 6. A few years later, she slowly progressed onto song-writing and began performing as a professional singer, songwriter and keyboardist at age 16. Minerva currently studies at the British Institute of Modern Music. She’s influenced by powerful female musicians like Etta James, Nina Simone, Florence & The Machine, P!nk, Lily Allen and Kate Nash, as well as artists such as Hozier and Queen. As you might expect, her own music is a tasteful mix of rock, pop, soul and jazz.
Pop-rock anthem Something Strange is only her fourth single, and her darkest track to date. This is a result of the story behind it. Minerva explains: “Something Strange was written as an emotional outlet almost immediately after I found out an ex partner had been unfaithful to me. This is probably one of the most raw and brutally emotional tracks that I have written and so I wanted the instrumentation to reflect that and give the track the punch it needed.“
With hard-hitting drums, distorted piano melodies, powerful lyrics and some gritty guitars and synth, her mission is accomplished. A catchy, upbeat and dynamic song that deserves a large audience.

Rick Astley – Every One Of Us
A lot has changed since Rick Astley started his career as a tea boy in the Stock Aitken Waterman studios. His first proper single Never Gonna Give You Up (1987) was a worldwide smash and in the years that followed, he sold over 40 million records. After 1993, Astley retired from the music industry at the age of 27, deciding that family life was more important.
In 2007, he made an unlikely comeback as an internet phenomenon. His Never Gonna Give You Up video showed up everywhere unexpectedly, a viral internet meme known as ‘rickrolling’.
On 25 October, Astley releases a new greatest hits album: The Best Of Me. It features original and reimagined versions of his hits, as well as the new song Every One Of Us. A tune with a surprising new sound, in line with that of Rag ‘n’ Bone Man and Hozier. Astley wrote and produced the song himself, and played all of the instruments on it. A great and welcome return!

Carte Blanche Music Top 2018
Ahead of your favourites among this year’s Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Year’s Day, I round off 2018 with my personal choice.
The last year, I introduced you to 1104 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; over 65 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 11 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018.
I’m very proud of this year-end list, as it differs largely from the majority of charts you’ll find. Just a few statistics:
- 58% of the tracks feature female lead vocals (up from an already impressive 43% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2017)
- 43% of the tracks are guitar-based (rock is dead? Think again!)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia, Norway, the Netherlands, Canada, Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland, Estonia, Germany, Sweden, Hungary and South Korea
- By consequence, you’ll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Hungarian, Spanish, Portuguese and Korean
- Needless to say, my year-end list contains no proper hits whatsoever 😉
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2018 features 100 tracks by 100 different artists. As making that choice was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order 😉.
I hope you enjoy listening to the list via the Spotify player. Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.
House Of Spirituals – Too Many Days [Ninja Mix]
House Of Spirituals are a rather mysterious London-based project, apparently featuring a British and a Spanish member. When they released their debut single Too Many Days at the end of 2015, it was immediately clear they’re inspired by Alan Lomax’s field recordings and have an obsession with ‘electronic soul meets swap stomp’.
At the time, they explained in an interview the song was written by the band as a message of hope to themselves, having been in a desolate place. “We had just been talking about the dark times we were going through. The room felt really heavy as it was one of those times when you don’t have an answer to the situation you’re going through. Straight away I went over to the piano and the words ‘too many days, I’ve been down’ came straight out. Then the rest of the song carried on writing itself and got more positive. It became almost a ‘call of arms’ for us to get up and fight our way out of the darkness.”
Three years later, the world has gotten to know artists like Hozier and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, who operate in the same musical field as House Of Spirituals. A great moment to try and launch their career on a broader scale with this beefed-up version of the song that started it all…
