Inge van Calkar – Rise
If you’ve been following the Carte Blanche Music blog, you’ll be familiar with Inge van Calkar. This talented singer and songwriter from the northern Dutch city of Groningen featured here more than once. She’s well-known for her smashing white outfits, but especially – and more importantly – for her ultra-catchy electro-pop songs. These are written by herself and ace producer/songwriter Gordon Groothedde.
Inge’s new single Rise has been a few years in the making. Two years ago, she played a part in music theatre spectacle ‘Rise Of The Blue City.’ She also got to write the opening song for the piece, which she performed with Dutch band Alamo Race Track. Now, a new version of this track is out officially. It has different lyrics, and was given a face-lift musically. In 2021, Rise is a pure pop bob, with thick ‘80s synths, matching the style of her overall repertoire.
A great step forward, both for the song and Inge van Calkar, whose star just keeps rising (pun intended, obviously).

Inge van Calkar – Spinning Around
‘Kylie meets Garbage’. That’s how Dutch songstress Inge van Calkar likes to describe the music on her upcoming album Full Color. New single Spinning Around fits that description like a glove. It’s a great pop tune, but with an edge. Mainstream, but with a retro ‘90s synth-pop touch. Ready for both radio and the clubs (but radio and other playlists are a safer bet these days…).
Van Calkar made Spinning Around with producers Snoet and Smoel. The song is about conquering the world on a night out. With a little luck, it’ll mark the start of her own world domination as well.

Inge van Calkar – Get Out Of My Way
Inge van Calkar, a Dutch songstress from the northern town of Groningen, has beefed up her already impressive electropop sound. She wrote her new single with two of the Netherlands’ most talented songwriters: Radboud Miedema and Gordon Groothedde. The latter produced the song as well.
Get Out Of My Way is about being too modest for your own good. “I have stood in line for too long, waiting for my turn to come. That’s outrageous,” says Van Calkar. Sounding rather irritated in the chorus: ‘Get Out Of My Way, Liar!’, she is angry with anyone who wants to stop her. “But just as well I’m angry with myself, because I was waiting,” she admits.
Luckily, this frustration results in a great pop song with a pounding electro synth riff. It deserves to become just as big a radio hit as her most recent single Touchdown. Both track are taken from Inge van Calkar’s upcoming EP Full Color.

Inge van Calkar – Imaginary
When Dutch singer-songwriter Inge van Calkar featured in a TV talent show, she played an acoustic guitar. Five years on, she exchanged this instrument for an electric one. The rest of her music was given a shot of electronica as well. This new recipe became the starting point for her upcoming second album, tentatively titled Black Confetti.
New single Imaginary precedes the album. It’s a sexy pop rocker, that sounds a little bit darker than before. In Van Calkar’s own words: “The new songs describe a side of humanity you’d rather not show.”
The singer cites bands like Radiohead and Grizzly Bear as musical references, as well as strong women like PJ Harvey and Alanis Morissette. At the same time, Imaginary is a catchy pop song that brings Kylie Minogue to mind.

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesn’t only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But that’s only my selection. Isn’t it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think it’s funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. That’s apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: Toukassé by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress Angèle’s debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Don’t miss a single recommendation by following me on Twitter, Facebook or, new for 2021, Instagram! I’ll do my best to make sure those accounts will soon be your favourites too, just like the tracks below:

The Vices – In And Out
To international music lovers, the Northern Dutch city of Groningen is probably best-known for its yearly showcase festival ESNS. One of the reasons for the organisers to choose Groningen for their event, was its versatile climate for music. Inge van Calkar and The Vices are only two recent acts to hail from the city.
The Vices are an indie pop-rock band, who hit the ground running in 2019. That year only, they supported Yungblud and Feeder, played ESNS (obviously) and 25 shows as part of traveling festival Popronde. Their music is best described as the love child of Cage The Elephant and The Strokes, with a hint of surf.
So far, the band released two EP’s: Life Grows and Good Morning City, Now Let Me Sleep…, but their debut album is on its way. Looking For Faces is set to be released on 12 March 2021, but lead single In And Out is out now. Catchy and tuneful, it’s a tasty mix of indie-pop, surf and guitar-rock. Talking about tasty… to promote the song, they brewed their own In And Out Blond Beer. Cheers!

Your favourites (April 2020)
Another month has passed, and what a month it was… Well, it was the month of April, obviously, and it was a very busy one. It strikes me that the number of new releases has exploded during the pandemic. And If I may be honest: a lot of it doesn’t meet the Carte Blanche Music standards. Sometimes, I’d like to yell: “It’s not enough to have the time and the means to make a recording. For a decent song, you need talent as well!” In other words: I listen to a lot more songs lately, only to end up with the ten good ones a week that I’d really like to recommend you. But hey, I happen to love listening to new music and making the best selection possible for you guys, so I’m not complaining!
Still, there’s much more great new music than I can write about. Check (and follow) my 2020 Spotify-playlist for the rest of the best. I update it constantly, so you’ll find it there first.
So, which of my recommendations were most popular in April? As you may know by now, I write about artists for all over the world, not sticking to the countries that provide most of today’s popular music, the US and the UK. I’m very glad to see that reflected in the articles that you liked best in the past month. France (Shanguy), Iceland (Daði Freyr), Belgium (Tout Va Bien), Canada (Roquemore) and even my own tiny Netherlands (Inge van Calkar) are represented amongst Your Favourites. That makes me proud.
Below, you can find the full Top 10. Your Top 10. Are there entries you didn’t know yet? Just click the link to go to my recommendation directly and listen why others liked it so much. Allow yourself to be amazed!
