Inhaler – My Honest Face
Inhaler are a four-piece rock band from Dublin, consisting of Elijah Hewson (vocals, guitar), Josh Jenkinson-Tansia (guitar), Robert Keating (bass), and Ryan McMahon (drums). They met while still at school and formed the band in 2016. Inspired by artists such as Joy Division and The Stone Roses, they mostly sound like a younger version of U2. This hardly comes as a surprise, since Hewson is Bonoâs son. That said, Inhaler can do without this reference. Although they only have a handful of songs out, they can easily stand on their own feet.
Last week, the band added two new tracks to their tiny catalogue: Thereâs No Other Place and My Honest Face. The latter, my favourite, has the rhythm tandem working their asses off, with its driving drums and bass line. Great song!

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Wildcard (week 44):
Stone – Money (Hope Ainât Gone)
Stone are the latest of an impressive row of exciting bands from Liverpool. The four-piece, led by Fin Power (son of The Laâs and Castâs John Power), are newly signed to major label Polydor. They call themselves âthe underground voice for the lost youthâ.
After a great summer which saw them supporting Sam Fender and Inhaler, theyâre currently on tour with The Wombats. All of this will reach a climax with the release of their debut EP Punkadonk on 18 November. It was produced by the legendary Rich Costey, who worked with Muse, Rage Against The Machine, P!nk, My Chemical Romance, Franz Ferdinand, New Order, Weezer, Foo Fighters, Charli XCX, Arctic Monkeys and zillions of other artists.
Money (Hope Ainât Gone) is Stoneâs anthemic new single. Not once, but twice it slows down for a stadium-ready section, which leads up to an equally epic call-and-response part. This is as fun as rock can get. The track is their first that was co-written by Power and Elliot Gill. The former says about that: âIt takes from both of our lives and the struggles weâve faced. Itâs about the hope for a better future and the struggles growing up in the Gen Z.â
Stoneâs fiery new single Money (Hope Ainât Gone) is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Bash! – In My Head
Based in Southampton, Bash! are a quirky quintet that formed in 2018 at Solent University. Amanda Bashmakova is the lead singer and namesake of the punchy pop band. Sheâs joined by Miles Hobbs (bass), Joe Burgess (guitars, producer), Angus McIntyre (drums), and John Burdfield (keyboards). The five of them live together in a five-bed house share. Only last year, they started releasing tracks, which ended up on their debut EP So Brokenhearted.
2022 is off to a great start with the brand-new tune In My Head. It was written by the band themselves and recorded in their own house. Sounds great though. Who needs studios anyway nowadays? This could have been a Haim song, but more cheesy. And thatâs meant to be a compliment. Imagine a combination of lively bass, punchy drums, striking guitars and sweeping synths. Or better: listen below.
Speaking about the songâs lyrics, lead singer Amanda Bashmakova explains: âAfter moving from Latvia to the UK, I struggled to find love due to the language barrier. The wrong words fell out of my mouth; I realised I could never truly convey my innermost feelings.â
Bash! have previously supported ground-breaking new artists such as Ashniko, Inhaler, Bloxx, Girli, and Husky Loops. Now, itâs time for them to get booked as headliners.

Leopard Rays – Carried Away
Alt.rock four-piece Leopard Rays are Luke Dawkins (vocals), Sean McCloskey (guitar), Tom Pattison (bass) and David Wilcox (drums). Hailing from Hartlepool in the UK, they take their influences from the likes of Pearl Jam, Oasis and Ride. Fans of more contemporary bands like The Pale White, Inhaler, Blossoms and Sam Fender are likely to love them.
New single Carried Away is a hymn to breaking up and breaking free. A celebration of hedonism in the face of bad luck and broken hearts, which combines chiming guitars with an anthemic sweetness. This makes it the bandâs most radio-friendly release yet.

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesnât only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think itâs funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. Thatâs apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: ToukassĂ© by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress AngĂšleâs debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Don’t miss a single recommendation by following me on Twitter, Facebook or, new for 2021, Instagram! Iâll do my best to make sure those accounts will soon be your favourites too, just like the tracks below:

Carte Blanche Music Top 2019
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which I publish on New Yearâs Day, I round off 2019 with my personal choices.
The last year, I introduced you to 979 great new songs via my container playlist Carte Blanche Music; almost 57 hours of music. Exactly 500 of those translated into a written endorsement through this blog. In other words: only one out of each 10 suggestions (and one fifth of all of my posts) made it onto the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019.
Just like the recommendations you can find here every day, this year-end list differs largely from the majority of charts youâll find. The Top 100 below is filled with the finest pop and rock; and a much larger percentage of rock than youâll hear on the radio. Most tracks were independently released by upcoming artists from all over the world, and feature female vocals. Just a few statistics:
- 60% of the tracks are sung by women (up from an already impressive 58% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2018)
- 53% of the tracks is guitar-based (10% more than last year)
- Apart from British and American acts, my list contains artists from Australia (14 of them!), France (9), Canada (5), the Netherlands (5), Norway (4), Ireland (3), Belgium (3), Spain (2), Sweden (2), Denmark (2), Germany (1), Israel (1) and Brazil (1)
- As a result, youâll not only hear lyrics in English, but also in French, Spanish and Swedish
- Apart from Dua Lipa and Lizzo, you wonât find any hits in this chart. Itâs a great way to discover artists, some of which I expect to break through in the years to come
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 features 100 tracks. You can listen to them via the Spotify player. As compiling the list was hard enough, the songs are sorted alphabetically. Just use the shuffle button if you prefer another order đ.
Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.
