Izzy Bizu – Faded[flag country="gb"]
After her 2016 debut album A Moment Of Madness, it took Izzy Bizu three years to produce its follow-up, the Glita EP. By the looks of it, we wonât have to wait that long for her sophomore long-player. Last week, she confirmed on socials that Faded is the first single from her long-awaited second album.
On Twitter, she writes of the single: “Itâs about throwing everything you have at your last hours with someone you love, saying sometimes itâs best to leave a situation before it burns out and becomes ugly. Weâve all been there before.”

Izzy Bizu (feat. Chris Martin) – Someone That Loves You ’19[flag country="gb"]
Izzy Bizu (British singer Isobel Beardshaw, who has an Ethiopian mother) put out her first EP Coolbeanz in 2013. The year after, she already performed at the Glastonbury festival. She continued to release singles of her own (most notably White Tiger), and ahead of her debut album A Moment Of Madness, she was the featured singer on electronic music duo Honneâs 2016 single Someone That Loves You.
A year later, Bizu opened for Coldplay on their A Head Full Of Dreams tour. That same year, she and the bandâs singer Chris Martin sung Someone That Love You live together for the first time. Two years later, on her new EP Glita, a studio version of this duet appears. Although Martin is uncredited as a vocalist, the male voice is unmistakably his.

Wildcard (week 2):
Izzy Bizu – Talking To You[flag country="gb"]
Last August, I saw Izzy Bizu play the Lowlands festival in Holland, where I happen to live. Isobel Beardshaw (her real name) and her great band treated the audience to a bunch of soulful summer songs. One of them was Izzyâs breakthrough single White Tiger. Other highlights included Give Me Love, NaĂŻve Soul and Glorious.
All of these tracks are from her album A Moment Of Madness, that hadnât yet been released at the time. Upon its release, in September, a standard edition of the cd was put out, as well as a Deluxe Edition, featuring four extra songs. Three months later a second Deluxe Edition was issued, with even one more new track. And itâs exactly that track, the wonderful Talking To You, that has just been released as a single. Excellent choice!

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)[flag country="##"]
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesnât only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think itâs funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. Thatâs apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: ToukassĂ© by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress AngĂšleâs debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Don’t miss a single recommendation by following me on Twitter, Facebook or, new for 2021, Instagram! Iâll do my best to make sure those accounts will soon be your favourites too, just like the tracks below:

Black Honey – Beaches[flag country="gb"]
Black Honey are a Brighton 4-piece with plenty bravado, swagger and talent, fronted by energetic front lady Izzy Bee. Not to be confused with Izzy Bizu, by the way. I played their early singles Corrine, All My Pride and Hello Today often in my then radio show Carte Blanche.
In my opinion, their new single Beaches is their finest moment. Its hand clap beat gives it a distinct glam rock feeling. Elsewhere, bursts of horns further fuel the already powerful chorus.
On writing the song, Izzy B. Phillips says:Â âBeaches is cheeky twisted collage of all things weird, set to a playground clapping song. Itâs all eye rolls, punk gigs & girls in polka dot bikinis. A nonsense filled retro world I wanna disappear into at times like these.â
Three minutes of sun-kissed seaside fun!
