Johnny Marr – Day In Day Out
Johnny Marr is an all-round musical hero, and as prolific and versatile as they come. He was in The Smiths, The The, Electronic, and Modest Mouse, and worked with artists as diverse as Jane Birkin, Pet Shop Boys, Crowded House, The Cult, Girls Aloud and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. He also released four solo albums.
His most recent album, Call The Comet, came out in June. The Tracers, Hi Hello and Walk Into The Sea have been released as singles, but my best-loved album track is Day In Day Out (not the David Bowie song, by the way). Perhaps because of its close resemblance to a classic Smiths track. Exactly halfway it breaks down, only to build back up again into a soaring guitar solo. Sure to become a live favourite.

Wildcard (week 3):
Nile Marr – Only Time Can Break Your Heart
Nile Marr has the talent to write catchy pop songs and infectious (guitar) melodies running through his veins. You won’t be surprised to learn he’s the son of Smiths guitarist and successful solo artist Johnny Marr. His first name is a homage to one of his father’s musical heroes, Chic’s Nile Rodgers. But when asked for his influences, he’ll mention Broken Social Scene, Fugazi and Elliott Smith.
Following a 6-year stint as a founding member of indie trio Man Made, Marr Jr. released his solo debut album Are You Happy Now? in 2020. The now 29-year-old artist’s new single, released via Bandcamp and on vinyl, is brand-new. It features How We Drift on one ‘A-side’, and Only Time Can Break Your Heart on the other. Marr recorded both tracks in a studio he built during the COVID-19-induced lockdown. The latter song is by far my favourite.
Jangly and upbeat, Only Time Can Break Your Heart will go down well with fans of bands like The Byrds, R.E.M., The La’s and Big Star. These were bands that made him want to write songs when he first heard them as a kid. “It doesn’t have to be shouty, it doesn’t have to be loud”, he explains. “It’s singing because I like it, it’s melody because I like melody. It’s liberating.”
Only Time Can Break Your Heart by Nile Marr is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so it’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

JohnnySwim – First Try
JohnnySwim is the stage name of singer-songwriter duo Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez, who married in the process. When you listen to their songs, you’ll soon enough discover Sudano is more than Donna Summer’s daughter alone (at many of her mother’s concerts she sang backing vocals).
First Try is JohnnySwim’s latest single. The song has been buzzing around for almost a year now. In October 2016 it was one of the tracks on their second album Georgica Pond and it stood out immediately. It’s a gospel-like song, full of soul, which features a piece of humming that is equal parts Let It Be and Lean On Me.
The track has been on my Carte Blanche Music playlist since last May, but has only now been remixed for its release as a single, accompanied by a video that features footage from the duo’s recent tour.

Wildcard (week 50): Cyn – The Smiths
Rihanna’s 2006 hit SOS was obviously based on a sample from Soft Cell’s Tainted Love. What’s long been less clear, is that the song’s second verse entirely exists of song titles from other ‘80s hits by a-ha, Cutting Crew, Tears For Fears, Kim Wilde/Diana Ross & The Supremes and Michael Jackson. Check this:
Take on me (uh-huh), you know inside you feel it right /
Take me on, I could just die up in your arms tonight /
I melt with you, you got me head over heels (over heels) /
Boy, you keep me hanging on, the way you make me feel.
Cynthia Nabozny (the full name of singer and composer Cyn) pulls the same trick on her new single. In fact, the title of the tune already gives it away. The song references several songs by The Smiths, like Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now, This Charming Man, The Queen Is Dead and There’s A Light That Never Goes Out. The Smiths being her ex’s favourites, the song depicts how a bad experience can ruin your relationship with a band. Just ask Morrissey and Johnny Marr…
Musically, the track has ‘80s written all over it as well. Not only The Smiths, but Pretenders and even The Cure shine through as well, so what’s not to like? Still, the song sounds very contemporary overall. It’s one of three new tracks on the ‘Extended Edition’ of Cyn’s album Valley Girl, which was released on Katy Perry’s label UnSub Records.
The Smiths by Cyn is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.
