Wildcard (week 36):
Kakkmaddafakka – Good Guy
Kakkmaddafakka are one of my favourite feel-good pop bands. Their new single is another great example why. Power pop song Good Guy is a throwback to the eighties. To the sound of fellow-Norwegians a-ha, to be more precise. With its pounding drums, buzzing bass and catchy piano loop, this has the potential to become a Take On Me for a new generation.
Good Guy is the fifth single to be released ahead of their upcoming album Revelation, which is planned for the end of September. Judging by these tracks, it sounds like the synthesizer has been given a more prominent role on this long-player. Something to look forward to!
Kakkmaddafakka’s Good Guy is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Kakkmaddafakka – Moonshine
Will Kakkmaddafakka ever stop releasing super catchy indie-pop tunes? Probably not. That’s why I like them so much. And on top of that, they’re a prolific bunch. They’ve released music during each and every year of the last decade. And by the looks of it, they’ll continue to do so in the ‘20s.
Just like Kakkmaddafakka’s recent tracks Baby and Echoes, their new single was not on the band’s latest album Diplomacy. Moonshine is another happy, radio friendly, summery song. Sure to bring some sunshine in your life.

Wildcard (week 50):
Kakkmaddafakka – Baby
Norwegian six-piece Kakkmaddafakka had a prolific year. They released their sixth album Diplomacy and a slew of great singles, as you may have read here before. This week, they gave birth to another ‘baby’. Hopefully, the brand-new track precedes more fresh material.
With Kakkmaddafakka’s happy indie-pop music, summer is always around the corner. New single Baby is no exception. It’s as upbeat, catchy and energetic as always, with fat drums and a driving piano underpinning the sing-along lyrics. The well-crafted, feel-good kind of song radio used to fall for. And they still should.
Not only are Kakkmaddafakka’s tunes perfect for the radio, they also make for a great live party. Do yourself a favour and go see in February, March or April 2020 on their upcoming European tour. For now, Baby is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

Kakkmaddafakka – Get Go
I’m quite fond of Norwegian sextet Kakkmaddafakka; I’ve written about them on this blog a few times before. Most recently, I put forward the track Sin off their most recent album Diplomacy as a potential future single. But that’s not the only great track on the long-player.
This time, I’d like to suggest you listen to the tune Get Go. Another up-tempo, radio-friendly, danceable, 80’s-influenced song that will refuse to leave your head once it’s entered it. You have been warned…

Kakkmaddafakka – Sin
When Kakkmaddafakka released their album KMF, back in 2016, I was afraid they were about to shorten their ‘controversial’ band name. Luckily, they didn’t (so far…).
The Norwegian band’s new album is called Diplomacy. Ahead of its release, the tracks Naked Blue, Runaway Girl and The Rest were put forward. Sin would be a great choice to be single #4. This catchy, up-tempo, funky number sounds a lot like On My Mind by Disciples, and would do great on the radio.

Kakkmaddafakka – Runaway Girl
Norwegian sextet Kakkmaddafakka (Axel Vindenes, Pål Vindenes, Stian Sævig, Kristoffer Wie van der Pas, Lars Helmik Raaheim-Olsen, and Sebastian Kittelsen) are on a roll. Releasing back-to-back albums in 2016 and 2017, the band have their fifth – as yet untitled – long-player set for release on 22 March.
Runaway Girl, with its striking resemblance to The War On Drugs, is the energetic second single to be released ahead of the album. Frontman Axel Vindenes says about it: “Runaway Girl is the story of forbidden love, how some people feed off playing with others’ emotions.”

Kakkmaddafakka – Young You
Spotify already shortens the band name Kakkmaddafakka and calls them KMF, so I would not be surprised if the band would soon start abbreviating it themselves as well. And let’s be honest: the pretty ‘controversial’ name of the Norwegians could generate wrong expectations about the music they’re making, which is actually very accessible.
Kakkmaddafakka’s latest album KMF was co-written and co-produced by Erlend Øye (Kings Of Convenience, Whitest Boy Alive), like their last two albums. It already produced the singles May God and Galapagos, but I like the new one, Young You, even better.
Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!
