Liela Moss – Turn Your Back Around
After releasing her 2018 debut solo album My Name Is Safe in Your Mouth, The Duke Spirit front woman Liela Moss entered a period of self-reflection. In preparation of her sophomore album, she even spent 10 days at a silent Vipassana Meditation center. This second long-player, Who The Power, produced by partner/producer Toby Butler, has just been released.
The record opens with the self-affirming new single Turn Your Back Around. A compelling track, based upon ‘80s synths and fast-paced drums. It comes with a video where Moss twists and turns to her own track in an empty dance studio.
She explains: “As its almost game over for the planet, I’m enjoying one filthy upbeat downhearted close-your-eyes-and-dance by-yourself pop song and offering it as a parting gift to Mother Earth.”

Liela Moss – Atoms At Me
Ever since the start of British rock band The Duke Spirit, in 2003, Liela Moss has been their front woman. Releasing her debut album My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth, in 2018, she also started a parallel solo career.
For her upcoming sophomore album Who The Power, she worked again with partner/producer (and TDS bass player) Toby Butler. They wrote and recorded the album in their studio in Somerset. The difference this time, she explains, was a desire ‘to create something more urgent’, which captured a sense of renewal while conveying a strong sense of despair at modern culture. “Perhaps that oscillating energy is best expressed musically via machines. We spent much of our time playing with vintage synths and drum machines, building a more visceral palette. I wanted the album to convey a depth of field, to be multi-layered yet feel simple, and to groove.”
First single Atoms At Me contains all of these elements. Amid its simmering darkwave throb, Moss issues a call to free the senses from the call to consume.

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesn’t only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But that’s only my selection. Isn’t it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think it’s funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. That’s apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: Toukassé by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress Angèle’s debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Don’t miss a single recommendation by following me on Twitter, Facebook or, new for 2021, Instagram! I’ll do my best to make sure those accounts will soon be your favourites too, just like the tracks below:

UNKLE (feat. Mark Lanegan & Eska) – Looking For The Rain
When UNKLE (then consisting of Mo’Wax label boss James Lavelle and Tim Goldsworthy) worked on their debut record in 1998, they collaborated to a great extend with DJ Shadow. The resulting album Psyence Fiction was a star studded affair, featuring Richard Ashcroft (The Verve), Badly Drawn Boy, Mike D. (Beastie Boys), Thom Yorke (Radiohead) and Ian Brown (Stone Roses) across the tracks.
In 2017, UNKLE only includes James Lavelle, but his upcoming fifth studio album The Road Part 1 has a comparable all-star line-up, featuring Andrew Innes (Primal Scream), Liela Moss (The Duke Spirit), Jon Theodore (Queens Of The Stone Age), Justin Stanley (Beck) and many more. The album’s out on 23 June, with work on The Road Part 2 already underway.
UNKLE’s cinematic, driving new single Looking For The Rain features both former Screaming Trees and Queens Of The Stone Age singer Mark Lanegan and Mercury Prize nominee Eska.
