Lime Garden – Pulp
Lime Garden (formerly known as Lime) are four childhood friends. Jumping over genre boundaries, they create a sound that is uplifting yet laid-back. The Brighton-based girls already impressed me with their early releases, but new single Pulp is easily their catchiest so far.
I’d call it ‘creepy disco’, but vocalist Chloe Howard describes the track in more detail for Fader magazine… “The inspiration for Pulp came from a slightly unnerving dream of a spooky man cloaked in orange pulp, tip-toeing and dancing through the streets at night”, she said. “We built the track around this absurd idea, with our efforts based on trying to mix the sweet adrenaline of a dance-filled club night, with feelings of unease and danger. It’s dark, yet upbeat and wonky, with wobbling bass and drums designed to capture the undulating streets he walks on.”

Lime – Fever
Coming together from across the UK, Lime are currently a Brighton-based band. Brighton is really one of the hotspots for great new British music at the moment. Singer Chloe Howard, guitarist Leila Deeley, bassist Tippi Morgan and drummer Annabel Whittle first met at 16 at music college. They became best pals pretty quick, and the music then naturally followed when hanging out. The girls cite Courtney Barnett, FEET, Squid and Sports Team as some of their influences.
Fever is only their second single. It follows Surf N Turf, which I loved a well. Just like their debut single, Fever crams several genres in a 3-minute song. With more than just a little nod to the ‘80s, it’s equal parts funk, pop, disco and rock. A great cocktail that begs for more!

Lime Cordiale – Screw Loose
Sydney-based brothers Oli and Louis Leimbach started Lime Cordiale in 2009. However, it took them 8 years to release their debut album. In that respect, their sophomore album 14 Steps To A Better You was a quickie. It’s slated to come out on 10 July.
Screw Loose is the duo’s new single. A great track, that reminds me a little of You’ve Got To… by The Young Punx. The song was written by the brothers on a sleepless night in Los Angeles. “We were laughing throughout the whole writing process”, said Louis of the track. “The great thing about working with our producer Dave Hammer is that he never says, ‘no’. Most of the time he just wants to take things further. The kookaburra laugh at the end of the song has been there from the start and we always thought someone would try to convince us to take it out. It’s a pretty dominating sound and very Australian but it places the song in the environment that we want it to be in.”

Lime – Surf N Turf
Female-fronted and Brighton-based… please meet Lime! The band consists of singer Chloe Howard, guitarist Leila Deeley, bassist Tippi Morgan and drummer Annabel Whittle. They formed the band in the summer of 2018.
Not the ‘80s disco outfit, they do have a nostalgic sound, which appears to date back to the ‘80s as well. Surf N Turf, Lime’s official debut single, is a catchy and energetic track, that’s genre-defying. It’s equal parts surf-pop, post-punk, and psych-rock. All together, they sound as refreshing as the citrus fruit they’re named after.
An up and coming quartet with a bright future ahead of them!

Bash! – In My Head
Based in Southampton, Bash! are a quirky quintet that formed in 2018 at Solent University. Amanda Bashmakova is the lead singer and namesake of the punchy pop band. She’s joined by Miles Hobbs (bass), Joe Burgess (guitars, producer), Angus McIntyre (drums), and John Burdfield (keyboards). The five of them live together in a five-bed house share. Only last year, they started releasing tracks, which ended up on their debut EP So Brokenhearted.
2022 is off to a great start with the brand-new tune In My Head. It was written by the band themselves and recorded in their own house. Sounds great though. Who needs studios anyway nowadays? This could have been a Haim song, but more cheesy. And that’s meant to be a compliment. Imagine a combination of lively bass, punchy drums, striking guitars and sweeping synths. Or better: listen below.
Speaking about the song’s lyrics, lead singer Amanda Bashmakova explains: “After moving from Latvia to the UK, I struggled to find love due to the language barrier. The wrong words fell out of my mouth; I realised I could never truly convey my innermost feelings.”
Bash! have previously supported ground-breaking new artists such as Ashniko, Inhaler, Bloxx, Girli, and Husky Loops. Now, it’s time for them to get booked as headliners.

Buffalo Paradise – Buffalo Paradise
When I heard the intro of this single, I could’ve sworn it was a Bob Seger track. But is isn’t. This is the self-confident debut single of a Sydney-based five-piece named Buffalo Paradise. And just to make sure you don’t mistake them for another act, they named their first ever release after themselves. Or perhaps they named the band after the title of their introductory tune, but the result is the same…
When vocalist Lachie Pringle and guitarist Angus Armstrong met in late 2019, they discovered a common interest in the same bands. They were both inspired by fellow-Aussie acts like Spacey Jane, Lime Cordiale and Gang Of Youths (who are no complete strangers to Carte Blanche Music either). The two then recruited Angus’ brother, multi-instrumentalist Chris Armstrong, drummer Rory McDougall and bass player Naren ‘Funky Fingers’ Iyer, who completed the band.
As said, Buffalo Paradise is only their first single, and what a way to start a career! It’s an upbeat feel-good song with driving rock rhythms, thumping basslines, soaring guitars and catchy vocals. Sure to get you in a good mood!

Weiss feat. Sharlene Hector – Lift Me Up
You may not know Sharlene Hector’s name, but I’m sure you’re familiar with her hits. Apart from fronting Basement Jaxx since 2001, she’s cooperated with a long and varied list of artists. Clean Bandit, Duke Dumont, Natasha Bedingfield, Nicole Scherzinger, Mark Ronson, Paloma Faith, Primal Scream, Royal Blood… Her voice attracted tens of millions of streaming listeners.
DJ/producer Richard Dinsdale, professionally known as Weiss, isn’t exactly an insignificant artist either. With his solo singles and collaborations with the likes of Becky Hill, he’s good for tens of millions of streams as well.
In other words, together, they’re a 2-piece super group. Their single Lift Me Up is ever as uplifting as you’d expect. It combines beats and a house piano straight from the early ‘90s with Hector’s stellar vocals. If you enjoyed Moby’s Go and Bassheads’ Is There Anybody Out There?, make sure to check this energetic track. It’s sure to evoke nostalgic feelings, and bring you back to the formative raving years.
Weiss says about working with Hector: “Sharlene’s been the voice behind so many of my favourite records over the last 20 years, but her name’s often been behind the scenes. I thought Lift Me Up was the perfect record to compliment her powerful and soulful voice. I’ve been a long-time fan, buzzing to have finally been able to work with her and feature her amazing talents on my production.”

Drug Store Romeos – What’s On Your Mind
Fiction Records is a legendary record label. They’re best-known for being the home of The Cure for over 20 years, but other acts on their roster throughout the years have been Snow Patrol, Kaiser Chiefs, Athlete, Kate Nash, Elbow, White Lies, Ian Brown, Delays and Tame Impala. And then there are Drug Store Romeos…
They’re a 3-piece from Fleet, Hampshire, formed at college by childhood friends Jonny Gilbert and Charlie Henderson. Sarah Downie replied to their ad for a bassist, but soon proved herself a better vocalist than either of the boys. Therefore, Charlie switched to the bass, while Jonny remained the band’s drummer. For them, growing up in a small suburban town inspired escapism and led them to search for music that complimented and romanticised the at times slow-paced and quite isolated existence.
In that respect, their new single What’s On Your Mind hits the bull’s eye. It’s a dreamy track at first, with lead roles for a prominent bassline and Sarah’s angelic vocals. But just before the 2’30 mark, it changes in pace. As if the trio are in a hurry to reach the level of success they deserve. I don’t think they have to worry about that…
Drug Store Romeos’ debut album The World Within Our Bedrooms will be released on 25 June.
