Wildcard (week 3): Luude & Issey Cross (feat. Moby) – Oh My
Some songs bring back great memories. I remember only too well I drove on the island of Curaçao in a cabriolet, while Mobyâs Porcelain blasted out of the car stereo. A wonderful holiday in lovely company, musically as well. That must have been in the summer of 2000, when Porcelain was a worldwide hit. A beautiful, subtle song that showed another side of an artist who was previously known mostly for his harder hitting, danceable songs. Personally, I love both sides of Mobyâs artistic output.
23 years later, Australian producer Christian Benson (Luude) breathes new life in the classic track. It didnât take him much more than the original strings and a frantic drum & bass beat to make it ready for todayâs dance floors. Talented 21-year-old UK singer-songwriter Issey Cross then laid some beautiful vocals on it. The new version, re-titled Oh My, already received Mobyâs seal of approval. He commented: âIâd love to say something smart or insightful about Oh My, but honestly when I first heard it I simply thought, âfuck, this is great!ââ
Bound to become a huge hit all over again! Youâd better put on your dancing shoesâŠ
Oh My by Luude & Issey Cross (feat. Moby) is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Moby feat. Gregory Porter & Amythyst Kiah – Natural Blues [Reprise Version]
New Yorker Moby was one of the most successful dance acts of the 1990s. His âTwin Peaksâ indebted single Go was a huge hit in Europe as well. It was followed by classics such as Move (You Make Me Feel So Good), Feeling So Real, Everytime You Touch Me and his âre-versionâ of the James Bond Theme.
But Moby also turned a hugely successful album act with the release of Play. This long-player was built around samples from the famous field recordings collected by Alan Lomax. Initially Play didnât do too well, due to the singles not being picked up by radio stations and television networks like MTV. But by licensing the songs to films, television shows and commercials, they became hits after all. This in turn resulted in radio and television joining the party after all. No less than 9 tracks off the album were released as singles.
One of those songs was Natural Blues, which originally contained an over 60 year-old sample from American folk singer Vera Hallâs Trouble So Hard. In 2021, Moby releases a new version of the song, this time featuring Gregory Porter and Amythyst Kiah. Their soulful vocals, paired with an orchestra, make for a powerful and moving combination, that gives the song a renewed energy.
This version will be included on Mobyâs upcoming âbest ofâ album Reprise, set for release on 28 May. On this new compilation, the musician revisits and reinterprets his greatest hits with a host of guest singers, accompanied by the Budapest Art Orchestra. Nevertheless, itâs probably one of the most poppy records to ever come out on the legendary classical label Deutsche Grammophon.

Moby Rich & Bishop Briggs – Friends*
Maxwell Joseph and Connor Pledger are Los Angeles-based alt-pop duo Moby Rich. On their new single, they collaborate with Bishop Briggs. She featured here multiple times before. Their very first meeting resulted in them writing Friends* together.
Itâs a dynamic duet, perfect for anybody yearning to make an escape from the friendzone. Their voices go back and forth between bass-heavy production, distorted guitars and emotionally charged screams. It culminates on an infectious chorus, âI hate that I want to be more than friends. Sometimes, losing friends is alright.â

Moby & The Void Pacific Choir – All The Hurts We Made
In 2016, Moby & The Void Pacific Choir (consisting of Mindy Jones, Julie Mintz, Jonathan Nesvadba, Joel Nesvadba, Jamie Drake and Lauren Tyler Scott) released These Systems Are Failing. A heavy album with heavy themes to it. The songs were very critical of the political and cultural climate in the United States. Are You Lost In The World Like Me? and A Simple Love were great singles, but sadly neglected by radio.
In 2017, Moby and his troupe are as mad at the US government as ever. So much so, that they recorded another album full of fierceness: More Fast Songs About The Apocalypse. And fast they are. All of âem. But you can leave it up to Moby to stick a beautiful melody under a stack of hard hitting beats and smashing guitars. In a remixed form, All The Hurts We Made could be a good radio single.
But itâs not Mobyâs intention to get these songs on the radio. These songs are meant for you. Thatâs why the 9-track album is available as a free download. Moby encourages fans to donate the money they would normally pay for the album to the charity of their choice.
Moby & The Void Pacific Choir – A Simple Love
Moby may be vegan, musically he is an omnivore. His legacy so far covers all possible genres. After releasing two singles with The Void Pacific Choir (consisting of Mindy Jones, Julie Mintz, Jonathan Nesvadba, Joel Nesvadba, Jamie Drake and Lauren Tyler Scott) in 2015, they brought out the full album These Systems Are Failing under that moniker in October 2016. A heavy album, on which Moby returns to his punk rock roots. In the eighties, before he rose to stardom with his hit Go, he was guitarist in hardcore punk band Vatican Commandos and alternative rock group Ultra Vivid Scene. But underneath a blanket of guitars the album is filled with beautiful melodies. And beautiful messages, as well.
The first single Are You Lost In The World Like Me? (with its great animated video) was about smartphone addiction and now Moby attacks a subject thatâs even closer to his heart. His new single A Simple Love is about animal suffering. The video focuses on pigs, but the real pigs are of course the humans involved in these practicesâŠ

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ

Your Favourites (2021)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2021 doesnât only include all of the 998 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2021, which I published last week. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: which of them were Your Favourites in 2021?
Apparently, the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. A quarter of the Top 100 below consists of blog posts from earlier years, which you find via search engines. âGoogle is your friendâ, as they say⊠Also, I think itâs wonderful to see young and upcoming artists like AngĂšle, Aili x Transistorcake, Mina Okabe, Eyjaa and Videoclub having more than one track amongst your favourites. These are acts to keep an extra keen eye on!
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Follow me on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and you wonât miss a single recommendation. Youâll find all of these brand-new songs and more in my daily updated Spotify playlist.
