morgxn – Losing Myself[flag country="us"]
Nashville-born Morgan Karr already sung in a gospel choir at the age of 6. As a 9-year-old, he took singing and piano lessons and started writing his own songs. Then he went to New York, where he ended up in the theatre world. In 2015, he contributed vocals to two Tiësto tracks. This was the start of him refocussing on his music.
Now based in Los Angeles, Morgan goes by the stage name of morgxn. These last five years, he released quite a few really good electronic pop songs. Some of them rightly featured here on Carte Blanche Music.
Meridian: vol. 1 is morgxnâs latest project. Itâs a 5-track EP, including his recent singles How Do You Hold What Hurts and Porcelain. However, opening track Losing Myself is by far my favourite. A great and infectious tune with a walking bass line and some nifty guitar strumming. Not only a fun song to dance to, but also one thatâll sound great on the radio.

Smallpools x morgxn – Slowdown[flag country="us"]
I still love LA indie-rock trio Smallpools for their 2013 debut single Dreaming. Released before the start of this blog, I played it a lot in my then Carte Blanche radio show. Singer-songwriter morgxn however featured her a few times already.
Now, the two acts team up for a collab thatâs more than the sum of its parts. Slowdown is an electro-pop tune with more than a little hint of Daft Punk, courtesy of that funky guitar.
The single deals with the struggle we all face in todayâs fast-paced society, where we feel pressure to be constantly on the go, pushing for more, needing more, making more, but we lose sight of the simple things in life that bring us joy. It urges us all to take a step back, take a deep breath and slowdown, if just for a moment. Not only when a virus forces us to, but also when the current pandemic is over.

morgxn & Nicholas Petricca – blue[flag country="us"]
As a companion to his 2018 album vital, American singer-songwriter morgxn (pronounced as âmorganâ) just put out the EP vital : blue. It contains five tracks, four of which are âstrippedâ versions of tracks from vital, including home. The latter was a single at the end of 2016, and re-released last year as a collaboration with Walk The Moon. More precise: as a duet with WTM singer Nicholas Petricca. This version was a Wildcard here at Carte Blanche Music.
Apparently, the collaboration gave every satisfaction, for the opening track on the new EP, a brand-new song, is another duet between morgxn and Nicholas Petricca (this time under his own name). Blue is a beautifully arranged winter song.

Wildcard (week 39):
morgxn & Walk The Moon – home[flag country="us"]
16 December 2016, nearly 30 years after I started, I made my last regular Carte Blanche radio show. In that program, I played the track home by morgxn, a guy from Nashville who already sung in a gospel choir at the age of 6. As a 9-year-old, he took singing and piano lessons and started writing his own songs. Then he went to New York, where he ended up in the theatre world.
By 2016 however, morgxn refocussed on his music, which led to the release of his album vital, containing his singles love you with the lights on, Duran Duran cover notorious and the stomper home. The latter alone is so far good for 8 million Spotify streams.
Fast forward to 2018. A slight reworking of home has just been re-released, this time featuring Walk The Moon singer Nicholas Petricca. The two versions donât differ dramatically, but this sure is a fine reminder of the great electronic soul track home already was!
This week, the Carte Blanche Music blog is the songâs temporary home, as it is the new Wildcard. This means it features here prominently, and itâs only one mouse click away from listening. Just like all of the tracks in the Wildcards 2018 playlist.

Smallpools – Cycle[flag country="us"]
When I first heard of American band Smallpools, via their debut single Dreaming, they made infectious, rocky radio pop. This led to slots as opening act for the likes of Twenty One Pilots, Grouplove and Two Door Cinema Club. In 2020, their music is as contagious and radio-friendly as ever, but with the guitars further down in the mix.
New single Cycle is a high-energy track with a dynamic, groovy sound. Speaking on the track, the band shares: âLife is full of beginnings and endings. We cope with the âendingsâ and carry on until we are forced to accept pushing the reset button. Cycle is a song about starting over, the inevitability of change, adaptation and the cycle of perpetual highs and lows.â
Cycle follows Slowdown as the second single off the bandâs upcoming sophomore album, due out in early 2021.
