Nona – Liar
Nona is an up and coming pop/soul singer from a small town in the Netherlands. She has yet to break out of her home country, but that’s just a matter of time. My recommendation for her 2018 debut single It’s Alright remains one of the best-read Carte Blanche Music posts.
Now, four years later, some of her singles have done great on the radio, attracting millions of Spotify plays in the slipstream. Since the release of her eponymous first album, she put out multiple new songs. So hopefully, a second long-player is on its way. ‘til then, here’s her new single.
Liar is still a soulful tune, but with a more modern sound. This is largely thanks to a breakbeat kind of drum part. The trumpets add extra excitement to the song. Apart from its sound, its length is very modern as well: Liar clocks in at 2’16, leaving us begging for more…

Nona – Last To Know
Talented young Dutch singer Nona (born Nona van der Wansem) made quite an impression with her first single It’s Alright. My blog about it was the second-most read in the month of release (July), while it was my most-read recommendation in the months of August and September. In October, it was still in the Top 10.
On her soulful debut, Nona’s powerful voice made her sound like a re-born Amy Winehouse, who’s certainly one of her musical heroines (excusez le mot). However, she also loves hip hop and pop, citing DJ Premier as an influence. Her new, more poppy single Last To Know, shows she likes Fleetwood Mac as well. It looks like Nona is an all-round artist to reckon with.
Can’t wait to hear her debut album, that she recorded in the United States. When it comes out, I’ll make sure you’re the first to know!

Nona – It’s Alright
Nona (born Nona van der Wansem) is a talented young singer, hailing from a small town in the south of the Netherlands. Her powerful voice is made for a repertoire of rootsy genres like blues, jazz and soul, placing her somewhere between Amy Winehouse and fellow-Dutchy Kovacs. At the same time, however, she loves hip hop and pop, citing DJ Premier as an influence.
Soon, she’ll release her debut album, that she recorded in the United States. The first single is out now, and indeed: It’s Alright!

Wildcard (week 23):
Amanda Cy – BeReal
Amanda Cygnaeus is a singer-songwriter, born in Stockholm. Raised with an appreciation for Sweden’s musical legacy, she’s undefined by genre. Above all else, Cy’s committed to the song. She was discovered by music executives at 16, but turned down an early record deal, choosing to grow and hone her craft. Meanwhile, she started working as a songwriter for artists like Léon, Paloma Faith, Iggy Azalea, and Drew Sycamore. In 2021, she independently released her debut EP Ugh!, which was well-received.
After a challenging period in her career and losing some of her belief in her own artistry, she’s now back with a new body of work. Her sophomore EP Waterworks was produced by Teddy Failure, who have worked with artists like Lova and Winona Oak.
The gritty alt-pop tune BeReal is not only the shortest, but also the best track on it, in my opinion. It was written in the summer of 2022 and inspired by her love for UK drum ’n’ bass. The track opens with a simple guitar line and verse before exploding into a loud and addictive chorus. “I wanted the production to feel gritty and juxtapose that with softer lyrics,” she explains.
About the lyrical contents, Amanda says: “BeReal is about how scary it is to be open and vulnerable with someone new. Especially after being hurt or if you’ve had your openness used against you, that is a scary ride to get back onto. Showing your true self, letting someone in and just hoping they’ll stick around is easier said than done. But in the end, it’s better to go for it and get hurt, rather than sit there and wonder what could’ve been.”
BeReal by Amanda Cy is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming – often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which I’ll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesn’t mean the blog is closing down. It’ll continue to be the home of my ‘best of’ collection (Werner’s Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, I’ll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your ‘All-Time’ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. You’ll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If you’re an artist, don’t be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprised…
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ‘♥’ in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Wildcard (week 16):
Angèle – Libre
Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Angèle’s debut album Brol was great and I wrote about many of its singles. It turned her into a pop princess, and her sophomore long-player Nonante-cinq will only enhance that status. I’m curious what would happen if she’d switch to lyrics in English…
The album’s second track is my favourite song on it. Libre deals with emancipation in the broadest sense. This includes claiming her position and taking revenge of the ones who hurt her. Musically, it’s a seemingly carefree and danceable tune, with a prominent bass line that resembles Tame Impala’s The Less I Know The Better.
As proposed last December, it’s Angèle’s new single! Even better: Libre is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, so it’ll feature prominently at the top of this blog for a whole week!
