Päter – Fan Fan Fan
I’ll be honest with you. To me, as a music lover, it’s all about the song. Always has been that way, even tens of years before the introduction of streaming. As a consequence, I love many songs, but there aren’t many artists I’d call myself a fan of. Even the artists I’m most fond of put out shitty music from time to time, in my opinion. They’re only human after all.
Yet, by the looks of it, it’s fair to say I’m a fan of Päter’s. She’s an upcoming Canadian artist with only 15 songs in her repertoire, but I like them all. Partly because of the great variety between those tunes. They’re all different. Unbelievable how many musical styles a young artist like her masters. Take her new single, for instance. It’s called Fan Fan Fan, and spoiler alert: it’s not about me (and not about a ventilator either) 😉.
Parmida (Päter’s real name) says about it: “Fan Fan Fan was written from the point of unrequited love when you’ve cried every last tear, lost every last minute of sleep and things start to get a bit topsy turvy. There’s a deliriousness to it. I wrote this when I was feeling particularly stubborn about a relationship that wasn’t going my way. It let me release the tension around it and laugh at myself a bit. I think if you’ve ever been there, you’ll understand the melodrama of this song. It feels that dramatic when you’re in it.”
Not only is Fan Fan Fan a fun (fun fun) song, but there’s some seriously incredible singing going on in the middle section as well. Another great addition to a catalogue that’s highly recommended to check out. You could start with the tracks below and then dive in deeper…

Päter – Obstinate Brain
If you’ve been following Carte Blanche Music for the last 15 months, you’ll have a decent impression of Päter’s career so far. The upcoming Canadian artist released an EP and a handful of singles, and her sophomore EP is on its way. Described by herself as ‘a collection of scrappy break-up songs’, the set is scheduled for release in February 2022. Something to look forward to!
For those who are as impatient as I am, the first single off the EP is out now. With its classic drum beat, rolling synths and wonderful vocal harmonies, it’s a pop/rock anthem for unrequited love. In Päter’s own words: “It’s an energetic track that portrays the ethos of romantic frustration while staying upbeat.”
She created Obstinate Brain in her hometown Toronto with fellow Canadian talents. The musicians on this self-written track are Kevin Howley (Running Red Lights), Alex Purcell (Dead Projectionists, Tenshi) and James Cudworth. It was produced by Charles Tilden (Delta Will), mixed by Kyle Gamble and mastered by Mariana Hutton.

Päter – float.ing
The world is changing, and young Canadian singer-songwriter Päter doesn’t only describe and oppose the consequences, she’s evolving herself as well. Not indifferent to the things happening around her, her lyrics always came from a very personal place. But often, they dealt with subjects in the outside world. On her new single, she invites us into her own realm. She describes float.ing as ‘a song very close to my heart’. “It was inspired by the bittersweet joy of being with someone you love, knowing it’s not going to last.”
Obviously, this subject matter demanded a mellower musical direction. Expect a lovely, folky, indie-pop song. Simple, but with a delicate string arrangement.
Just over a year since the release of her debut single Dam, Damn, Päter keeps developing impressively, gradually revealing more of the real person behind her musical project: Iran-born, Toronto-based Parmida Kakavand. A brave step forward and a promising start of more to come!

Päter feat. Alexandra Willett – MTL
Iran-born, Canada-based singer-songwriter Päter is a young artist with currently only nine songs on her repertoire. But by the sound of them, she has a bright career ahead of her. If that might not happen, she can always look back upon being a good person. For instance: she makes a habit of doing fundraisers, giving away her modest income from music to good causes like the Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources. This social attitude is also reflected in her lyrics, like the ones for her recent single Earth In Revolt.
MTL (which is short for Montreal) is Päter’s new single. She recorded it with fellow Canadian artist Alexandra Willett, who adds a francophone element to the song. MTL is a joyful and catchy track. A great way for Päter to end the year 2020, which saw her deservedly grow her audience.

Päter – Earth In Revolt
2020 saw the impressive rise of young Canadian artist Päter. She introduced herself successfully with the single Dam, Damn, which she followed up with her debut EP SOLE. She just released a video for the EP’s first single Sleep, which is already succeeded by a brand-new track. Earth In Revolt is Päter’s new single. The singer-songwriter describes the song as ‘experimental alternative rock sounds packed into a rousing climate change anthem’.
In an interview with the Off The Record blog, she shares how the track came about. “I started writing it while I was in the car with my mom accompanying her to an errand, having not left the house in over a month. I was looking around at the empty highway at 5pm on a Tuesday and feeling that, even though it doesn’t seem directly related, this pandemic is a result of the way we’ve treated the Earth, the way we consume and rip through resources. I’ve had that feeling right from the start. Kind of consumerist guilt, the inevitability of ‘karma coming around’. I could go on about it for ages. Then the marching chant of ‘you’re gonna see the Earth in Revolt, you’re gonna see the Earth in Revolt’ came up. I recorded a voice memo of it in the car and my mom was very excited by the whole thing.”
As an adult, I think it’s encouraging that young people have visions like this and feel the urge to take action. Hopefully they will be given (or take) the opportunity to solve the problems older generations caused. Before it’s too late…

Päter – Sleep
Päter (which, as she explains herself, rhymes with later) is a Canadian artist, who records and produces her own music in true DIY spirit. She started her career impressively with her debut single Dam, Damn. This track, which collected almost 200.000 Spotify streams in only two months, is also included on her first EP SOLE. She describes the EP as ‘a six-song inquiry into the self’. “SOLE stands for solitude, isolation, and, well, the soul.”
Sleep is Päter’s new single. It’s an indie-rock song with beautiful vocals and an irresistibly catchy chorus. In her own words: “This is a song about feeling powerless in turbulent circumstances. Right now feels like a transitional period where the past isn’t worth returning to, and the future is full of uncertainty. Sleep grapples with that collective feeling of limbo. I wrote it on an afternoon in isolation when I gave up on using this time to be productive, and just took a long nap.”

Wildcard (week 27):
Goodnight Sunrise – This Is Yours (To Make)
At Carte Blanche Music, we’re huge fans of Canadian artists. Well, not all of them, obviously, but there’s a lot (really A LOT) of good music coming from the country. Recent examples include Päter, Augusta, Altered By Mom, Housewife, Lights, Velours, Blonde Diamond, Jessia, Dear Rouge, noelle, Harm & Ease, Madison Olds, Allie X, Elina Filice, Lølø, Chris Corey, Ruby Waters, Goodnight Sunrise… Do you want me to continue? All of these have featured on this blog before.
Today, let’s focus on the latter. Goodnight Sunrise are a Toronto band, led by the dual male-female vocal alchemy of keytarist Vanessa Vakharia and guitarist David Kochberg. Since forming in 2011, they earned a reputation as a great live act through over 400 shows across Europe and North America.
With their new single This Is Yours (To Make) the band comes full circle. One of their first self-written songs, they originally recorded it ten years ago for their debut album Create/Destroy/Create. From the start it was clear it had the potential to become a fan favourite and anthemic concert closer (which it came to be). Since the track kept evolving over the years, Goodnight Sunrise decided to record an explosive new version of it. More powerful and punchy than ever, it’s now likely to grow from a fan favourite into a Canadian classic.
If you happen to be in the country this summer (or are lucky enough to live there), don’t miss the band while they’re on tour!
This Is Yours (To Make) by Goodnight Sunrise is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.
