*SONG SNACK*
New single from her 4th EP, another great collection of Madchester-influenced breakbeat pop.

Pixey – Take Me On
The more music Pixey puts out, the better you can hear sheâs developed her own vibrant sound. Based on anything from the good old Madchester sound, breakbeats and bubblegum pop, but with a fresh and modern twist to it. Pixey writes and co-produces her songs herself, and also plays all the instruments, which she records in her Liverpool bedroom. I imagine itâs a lot of fun to make, and itâs definitely a pleasure to listen to.
Pixey releases her singles fast and furiously, and ultimately collects them on EPâs. Her third EP Sunshine State is set to be put out on 29 October. Take Me On is the third single to be unleashed ahead of it. It opens with a riff that reminds me of Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. But when the drums kick in, itâs immediately recognisable as a Pixey track.
She says about it: âThe song is about taking back control when nobody is listening to you or taking you seriously, which Iâve definitely had to deal with a lot in the past. Iâve always wanted to write an empowering anthem with a simple hook, so I was so pleased when the song came together like it did.â

Pixey – Sunshine State
Taking DIY to the next level, Pixey writes and produces her own songs, plays the drums, bass and guitar, and sings. Hailing from Liverpool, other artists from her hometown and from Manchester are her main influences.
Take euphoric new single Sunshine State for instance. Itâs her first new music since her debut EP Free To Live In Colour, that came out last March. The song has no trouble to live up to its title. With itâs lush guitars and breakbeat-like drums, Sunshine State has a distinct baggy Madchester sound. Only 2â18 long, itâs upbeat from start to finish.
Pixey co-wrote the tune with Pete Robertson, the former drummer of The Vaccines. Since he left the band in 2016, he co-produced beabadoobeeâs second EP Space Cadet.
âSunshine State is a celebration of people coming together through music and being free to start whatever revolution they want, big or smallâ, says Pixey. âItâs also about that power and mood that music can give you.â

Pixey – Electric Dream
Iâm really looking forward to 24 March. That day, one of todayâs most outstanding talents, Pixey, releases her second EP Free To Live In Colour. The title track is on it, as well as last yearâs great tune Just Move. And she just released a third song off it, Electric Dream.
Being a performer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Electric Dream is another one of Pixeyâs DIY tracks. Its fresh, vivid, clever and danceable Madchester sound brings us right back to 1990. That isnât how it came to life however. She says about the single: âElectric Dream was originally written as a piano ballad, but after finishing the lyrics I felt the song worked as a dance track. I wrote it to make sense of being locked in with nothing to rely on but technology. The verses are all of my anxieties that come with that. Like trying to simulate humanity digitally and what kind of a future that would be. But the choruses are about the imperfections of real life that technology and AI canât give us.â
Apart from the three singles so far, her new EP will feature two more songs. Pixey adds: âI wanted a collection of tracks which gave a quick snapshot into me and my brain – where Iâm from, where I want to be and what Iâm thinking about,â she adds of her new EP. âI hope people can take something meaningful from it or simply have a dance.â
And thatâs not all. She’s currently writing about three new tracks a week, so you can expect a whole lotta music to come out this year.

Pixey – Free To Live In Colour
Liverpudlian DIY artist Lizzie Hillesdon, a.k.a. Pixey, doesnât hide her inspirations. Her latest single Just Move for instance referenced The Stone Roses, King Bee and Madonna. In her new single Free To Live In Colour, Phil Collinsâ Another Day In Paradise subtly shines through.
Where Just Move was meant to get people moving (obviously), this new song has a more seductive nature. Itâs a suspenseful track, a little bit spooky even, with some psychedelic touches. Through her imaginative lyrics, Hillesdon describes her daily struggle to be herself and to be liberated. Just like her mother and father during their carefree, youthful days.
Pixey explains: “Free To Live In Colour was written, recorded and produced in my bedroom at a time where I was struggling to understand and express my identity. I wrote the lyrics to sound like a fever dream, but itâs really about staying true to yourself and not being afraid to change, even though life can often feel like a rat race. Thereâs so many dimensions to what living in colour means, so you can interpret that in whatever way means something to you.”

Wildcard (week 39):
Pixey – Just Move
Pixey (born Elizabeth Hillesdon) is a DIY artist in the true sense of the word: she literally does everything herself. She writes and produces her own songs, plays the drums, bass and guitar, and sings.
Listening to her music, you can hear she doesnât try to hide sheâs from North West England. The influence of other bands from Liverpool and Manchester is evident. With itâs lush guitars and breakbeat-like drums, her new single Just Move has a distinct Madchester sound. Think The Stone Roses, for instance. On top of that, the opening guitar riff sounds like itâs borrowed from King Beeâs Back By Dope Demand and part of the vocal melody comes straight from Madonnaâs Material Girl. Further referencing the queen of pop, she even urges the listener to âget into the grooveâ.
However, with all of these ingredients, Pixey mixes an energy drink thatâs very much her own. Itâs fresh but spicey, and highly addictive.
Talking about her euphoric single, she says: âJust Move was written and recorded in my bedroom at the beginning of lockdown. I thought it would be ironic to write a dance tune when the last thing anyone would be doing is going out and actually dancing. (âŠ) With the last few months feeling so complicated and unprecedented I thought it would be refreshing to write something with a simple request, as dancing and moving is in (most) peopleâs nature!â
