Wildcard (week 23):
Rammstein – Ausländer
Rammstein have never got out of the way of controversy. On the contrary, it’s a game they play very well. No better way to introduce their new eponymous album than with the provocative video for first single Deutschland. Following a milder clip for second single Radio, the band are now back for a next hit, in more ways than one.
Third single Ausländer has a title that may raise eyebrows, but its video also has titties that may raise eyebrows. Content-wise, it plays with both colonialism and the current refugee problem. All of this seems to have been done in order to evoke a debate. Mission accomplished, for contrary to the criticism that followed the Deutschland mini movie, the Ausländer clip has already received much praise, especially outside Germany.
Apart from the imagery, I think Rammstein’s new single is a great song. Hard-hitting, but with great melodies. As the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, Ausländer will feature here prominently for a whole week!

Pyro – Your Love
In their home country the Netherlands, things look good for rock band Pyro. The tracks off their first EP Out Of The River received much airplay, and their second EP Come Back For You is ready for release. Once again, it was recorded with the best studio musicians, mixed by Ronald Prent (Rammstein, Simple Minds) en mastered by Ted Jensen (Green Day, Kings Of Leon). The 4-track opus will be out early in 2021. But first they put out Your Love as its second single.
It’s a euphoric track, full of Queen-like choruses, acknowledging that love is a kind of drug. The intro is played on a crappy guitar, which the band found in the recording studio’s kitchen. Combined with a vocal effect, the first seconds sound like a really old recording. But shortly after, all filters are lifted, leaving a very contemporary rock song, influenced by bands like Kings Of Leon and Foo Fighters. A beautiful acoustic version will follow soon.

Pyro – Come Back For You
Imagine a band that combines the energy of Foo Fighters with the holy fire of U2. Could that be possible? It is. Please meet Pyro, a Dutch rock band with Bas Soetens as its front man and main songwriter. The coming months, they’ll release four singles, which will eventually form their second EP Come Back For You. Just like their first EP Out Of The River, it was mixed by Ronald Prent (Rammstein, Simple Minds) and mastered by Ted Jensen (Green Day, Kings Of Leon).
Title track Come Back For You is Pyro’s new single. A driving rock song with pounding drums, epic guitar riffs, melancholy verses and a catchy chorus. Lyrically, it’s a love song about couples that take a break from their relation. It’s often when you’re away that you realize you already had what you’re looking for.
Also keep your eye out for a beautiful acoustic version of this banger, to be released in the coming weeks.

Pyro – F.O.M.O.
Pyro (which means ‘fire’ in Greek) are a Dutch band, consisting of two singer/guitarists and a tight rhythm section. This already sounds powerful and energetic on paper, not to mention live. Think Foo Fighters, The Offspring, Kings Of Leon, Audioslave and Linkin Park.
The band’s upcoming debut EP counts four solid rock songs, which were mixed by Ronald Prent (Rammstein and many others) en mastered by Ted Jensen (Green Day, Kings Of Leon and lots more). F.O.M.O. (Fear Of Missing Out) is Pyro’s new single. Its message is as strong as their sound: it’s better to do one thing to the fullest, than more things half-heartedly.

Kraftklub – Fenster
For me, Kraftklub is one of the best German bands in recent years. After a festival gig in 2009, where rapper Bernd Bass (Felix Brummer) collaborated with rock band Neon Blocks, they decided to start a new band together: Kraftklub. They gained popularity by opening for other well-known German bands, like Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärtze and Rammstein. It didn’t take long for them to become headliners themselves.
2 June KraftKlub will release their third studio album Keine Nacht Für Niemand. Fenster is the second single off it. It’s about an angry citizen who wants to take the law in his own hands. The lyrics tackle topics like fake news, irrational anger and fear, and the wish to set the record straight. Brummer sings/says in his characteristic way: “Scheiß Wetter, kein Geld, die Elite ist Schuld!” and “Auch du kannst was erreichen, trag auch du zu etwas bei!”
I won’t give away too much, but if you can’t stand seeing blood, you could best stick to the audio of the song.
