Wildcard (week 17):
renforshort – Feeling Good
Home to artists like The Beaches, Tegan & Sara, Altered By Mom and Päter, Canada is one of my favourite continents, music-wise. ren (the musical alter ego of Lauren Isenberg) is from Canada as well. The Toronto-born singer-songwriter debuted with her single Waves in 2019. A year later, she changed her stage name to renforshort. Since then, she collaborated with numerous other artists, beside releasing her own music. Currently, her catalogue holds one full album and four EPs.
EP #5, A Girl’s Experience, is slated for release on 6 June. Three tracks have already been released so far. On My Way! and Pretend To Like Me are now followed by Feeling Good. The bold new single overflows with energy and attitude. Combining renforshort’s signature alt-pop flavours with a 90s pop throwback and a touch of psychedelic-tinged production, it pushes her evolving sound to new heights. The song gradually intensifies, culminating in a cathartic release, with renforshort delivering punchy, vibrant vocals. A contender for the feel-good song of the year!
Just ahead of her 23rd birthday, Feeling Good by renforshort is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. It will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Wildcard (week 21):
renforshort – Getting Over You
In 2019, ren (the musical alter ego of Lauren Isenberg) debuted with her single Waves. A year later, she changed her stage name to renforshort. Since then, she collaborated with numerous other artists, beside releasing her own music.
Now, the Toronto-born singer-songwriter has released her eagerly anticipated third EP Clean Hands Dirty Water. Three of its six tracks have already been put forward as singles. Getting Over You is single #4. ‘It’s a way different vibe than any other song I’ve put out on this project’, renforshort says on her Instagram.
In an interview with Wonderland magazine the Canadian alt-pop star further elaborates about the tune. “I was really into this idea of writing a 70’s inspired bass forward, synth-y, piano-pop song. So, I spoke to Jeff Hazing before that session and we went over some references and ideas and came into this session with Midi Jones – who is exceptionally talented – and he perfectly captured what I wanted. We got to do a bunch of fun vocal production and experimented sounds I’d never used in my music. It felt like breath of fresh air to me.”
Although mid-tempo, Getting Over You has a high energy level. Well-crafted around her honeyed vocals, it’s catchy, melodic and yet edgy.

renforshort – Virtual Reality
At just 18, Lauren Isenberg has already generated significant international industry buzz. She’s signed to a major label and has a well-received EP (Teenage Angst) under her belt. Early in her career, the Toronto singer-songwriter used a stage name as short as Ren. Recently however, she extended her moniker to renforshort. In my book, that’s humour with a capital H. But her lyrics are far more serious.
Take her new single Virtual Reality, for instance. That was inspired by the fact that most individuals – ren included, are addicted to their phones. It’s a much-needed wake up call, not only for people her age. A catchy tune with gritty production, it’s a rock-infused alternative pop song. Great taster for her forthcoming second EP!
