RoseeLu – Overthinking
You may have read here before I’m pretty enthusiastic about 20-year-old Danish newcomer RoseeLu. If not, links are below… Last year, she made quite an impression with her first four singles on the Universal label. She completely delivered artistically, but alas this hasn’t yet translated into the commercial success she deserves. It’s very hard to believe that’s not going to change with her next single, for it’s a powerhouse track.
Overthinking is the latest track from Rosa Frydensbjerg (her real name). Another great example of RoseeLu’s hard-hitting grunge-flavoured modern pop sound, where acoustic guitars clash with electric ones over a great beat. And where her powerful voice is cut up to great effect.
This is a song about a young, independent woman who knows exactly what she wants to do in her life, but who can be brought off course by doubt. Autobiographical stuff, for sure. RoseeLu says about Overthinking: “Most of the time, I’m totally aware of my own thoughts and I know how to control them – make them mine and turn them into positive vibes and self-care. But sometimes, I doubt. Then all these unconscious, irrational thoughts take over my head and make me hypersensitive. I know, I’m not the only one overthinking life, so I had to write a song about it.”

RoseeLu – Got Me Feeling Like This
Always doing things her own way, RoseeLu has always been a loner. Knowing that, you won’t be surprised she released her first two singles via the DIY route. Those two tracks were enough for Universal Denmark to discover her. They must have promised her big things, for almost contrary to her nature, she decided to sign with the largest record company of the world. Quite honestly: it will be hard for the label not to deliver on its promises. RoseeLu is a huge talent and a potential superstar. All the label has to do, is tell the world about her.
I’ve been praising her major label debut, Playing Alone, extensively last March. Got Me Feeling Like This is only the third Universal release from the 20-year-old Copenhagener. The opening notes bear some resemblance to Top Of The World by The Carpenters, while RoseeLu probably doesn’t even know the song. The rest of the track however has more of a ‘90s feel than the sound of the ‘70s.
Got Me Feeling Like This is an energetic tune, thanks to driving guitars, and a four-to-the-floor beat that could’ve been programmed by Butch Vig for a Garbage hit. Garbage the band, that is. During the first 40 seconds, the song is rather understated, but along the way it builds into a euphoric chorus. Throughout, RoseeLu’s vocals have a Billie Eilish-like nonchalance, but with more of a sparkle to it. This might very well be the voice of the next generation.
About the lyrical content, the singer says: “Although I’m still rather young, I’ve experienced being madly in love. I’ve also experienced the type of love where you end up losing yourself and lack the ability to be true to your own values. And even though it’s a hard farewell, sometimes you just have to do it in order to return to yourself again. This song was made only with the intention of letting these feelings go – make them free and give them the space they need.”
Lastly, one piece of advice: with a huge international career at her fingertips, it might be time for RoseeLu to start communicating via her socials in English. Could someone please forward this tip to her? Thank me later 😉

Wildcard (week 13):
RoseeLu – Playing Alone
RoseeLu has always done things her way and has always been a loner. In other words: the 19-year-old Danish newcomer is a girl with character. Rosa Frydensbjerg (her real name) grew up to the sound of her dad’s piano, and wrote her first melodies in kindergarten. Eventually, she decided to follow her own dream and ambition to become a full-time musician. She quit high-school, left home and moved to Copenhagen at the age of just 17.
Destined for big things, she already released three tracks in 2020. But with this new autobiographical single, Playing Alone, her break-through is inevitable. It’s a very confident track, which clashes grungy guitars with contemporary beats. The sound of the alternative ‘90s meets raw, modern R&B and widescreen pop.
RoseeLu explains: ”Even though it sounds cliché, I really hope to inspire anyone who listens to embrace their inner child and cherish it. Playing Alone is my appeal to those who thinks kids are wrong if they – like me – are not into commercial toys and football trading cards, but are totally fine contemplating with themselves in their own company – which is OK and super healthy.”
To me, Playing Alone is the best new single of this week, which makes it the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This means, it’ll feature prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week!

Ericka Jane, Dopha & bbybites – Come Sit With Us
Denmark has always been a great incubator for new pop talents. The last few years alone, the country produced hot new artists like Drew Sycamore, RoseeLu, Mina Okabe, Eyjaa and Dopha. All females, as you might have noticed. Despite that, Denmark doesn’t have a real ‘girl crew’ atmosphere, according to singer Ericka Jane. In a press release, she claims Danish women in pop have often supported each other, but this seldomly resulted in musical collaborations.
In that respect, Come Sit With Us is a break-through. It’s not only an ode to female artists and sister love by three of Denmark’s most promising young singers, it’s also an invitation to others to spread these good vibes. The song title is a response to this scene from teen movie ‘Mean Girls’, where Regina is told: ‘You can’t sit with us’. Instead, Ericka Jane, Dopha and bbybites invite everyone to come and sit at their table.
Come Sit With Us is an incredibly catchy tune with euphoric synth strings, memorable vocal melodies and multiple ways to say ‘okay?!’.
This week, Come Sit With Us by Ericka Jane, Dopha & bbybites is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week. Okay?!

Ellis Newman – Leaving The Party
Within Europe, the best pop music is probably made in Scandinavia. Polished pop, like Dagny’s or Sigrid’s, or pop with more of an edge, like RoseeLu’s or Tove Lo’s. For the 2.0 version of herself, young Dutch singer, songwriter and producer Ellis Sportel draws inspiration from the latter category. She uses her catchy songs to escape daily life, puts emotional and personal lyrics into something to dance to.
In 2021, she came to the scene with three of her own songs and a few collaborations, using the Ellis Newman moniker. If her new single is anything to go by, 2022 will be her year. Leaving The Party has this edgier sound, resulting in a darker, heavier production, minor melodies and even house influences. Call it a party anthem for introverts.
The singer says about the track: “I never really related to the ‘put your hands up’ kind of songs. Since parties can overwhelm me a lot, I’ve always wanted an anti-party song. I don’t know a lot of songs like that so I thought I’d write one from my point of view.”
‘If you’re looking for me, I’ll be leaving the party’, Newman sings. But as far as I’m concerned, the party has just started, and – maybe to her own discomfort – Ellis is the one who’s being celebrated.
