Semisonic – Basement Tapes
Thanks to great tunes like Closing Time, Secret Smile and Chemistry, Semisonic are one of my favourite bands from around the turn of the century. In 2002, following their third album All About Chemistry, the band went on an indefinite hiatus. However, they never broke up. In the meantime, frontman Dan Wilson built a successful career of his own. He was a songwriter and producer for the likes of Pink, Dixie Chicks and Adele, as wel as a solo artist. He is quoted as saying he found it difficult to write new material that sounded like Semisonic.
In 2017, Wilson met Liam Gallagher with the intention to write new songs for the latter. Eventually, the two didnât work together. Wilson felt the sketches of the songs he wrote for Gallagher were more suitable for Semisonic instead.
In the summer of that year, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their 2016 debut album Great Divide, Semisonic reunited for a series of shows. At these occasions, they played Great Divide in its entirety. At the end of that year, commemorating the upcoming 20th anniversary of their sophomore album Feeling Strangely Fine, they performed the whole of that album a few times. Last year, they came together again to do some more gigs. During these 2017-2019 shows, they also played some of Wilsonâs new, previously unreleased âGallagherâ songs.
These tracks have now been properly recorded and released on the EP Youâre Not Alone. This is Semisonicâs first collection of new material in 19 years. It contains five fine examples of craft song-writing, as weâve come to expect. Basement Tapes is my favourite. A great pop-rock song, very well sung and executed by Wilson and his band. A welcome return.

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)[flag country="##"]
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesnât only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think itâs funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. Thatâs apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: ToukassĂ© by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress AngĂšleâs debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.

Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and donât want to please everybody at the same time. Weâre here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, â80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this yearâs list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last yearâs tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. Youâll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, youâll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button đ.
Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.

Lola Lennox – Back At Wrong
Some names in pop music are truly unique. I mean, the first names Janet, Whitney and Kylie only point at one person each, donât they? Likewise, when I put forward last name âLennoxâ, Iâm sure youâll think about Annie. Well, maybe thatâs about to changeâŠ
Enter Annieâs daughter Lola Lennox. Obviously, music has been in her blood from as long as she can remember. She has played the piano and sung from seven years old, written songs from the age of fifteen, and earned a place at the Royal Academy of Music. Now, Lola is a singer, songwriter and musician in her own right, and her third single Back At Wrong is an absolute banger.
Produced by Dan Muckala (Echosmith, Tiesto), with additional production by Annie Lennox and Braeden Wright, it features an infectious, pounding beat from the start. Along the way, adding a playful piano and a surprise organ, the song builds into a mighty soundscape.
Back At Wrong draws on Lolaâs own experience of a toxic relationship. She says about it: âThe ones that hurt the most can be the hardest to let go of. I wrote Back At Wrong about a relationship that was fraught with dysfunction. I knew I had to end it but the spell of our togetherness was so hard to break. We felt either ecstatic highs or heart wrenching lows, and the drama was fuel for passion and co-dependency. This song is a statement where I take the power back.â
Lola spent time in the studio over the past year with the likes of Eg White (Florence & The Machine, Sam Smith) and Semisonicâs Dan Wilson (Adele), and will be releasing more singles throughout the year.
