Wildcard (week 34):
Telenova – Margot
Telenova are lead vocalist, songwriter and filmmaker Angeline Armstrong and multi-instrumentalists Edward Quinn and Joshua Moriarty. They produce sample driven alt-pop with prominent trip-hop and electronica influences and plenty of energy. I’ve been following Aussie trio ever since their first single Bones. In the three and a half years since then, they released an impressive number of great tracks and EP’s. Now, they add their full, self-produced debut album Time Is A Flower to that lot.
Four of its tracks have been released as singles prior to the album release. And now, Margot is the fifth single to promote the long-player. A song about people viewing others as gods, and the inevitable destruction that follows. Combining dark romanticism and alt pop, it’s an absolute album highlight to me.
Armstrong describes Margot as a multilayered metaphor. “Margot isn’t one woman. She’s symbolic of a person I have envied in others; seen in myself; longed to be like; run from being. Margot is about obsession, idealism, idolatry, longing, envy… it’s about trying to make gods out of people or ourselves and how that destroys us, because we can’t live up to that.”
The song doesn’t waste time on an intro and quickly adds a driving beat to turn into an insanely danceable tune. Other ear-catching elements are the trademark Telenova bassline, fasing guitars and Armstrong’s feather-light vocal delivery. A real gem!
Margot by Telenova is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Telenova – Tranquilize
Telenova is a new Australian super group. In both senses of the word. First of all, the band is made up of front woman Angeline Armstrong, and producer/multi-instrumentalists Edward Quinn and Joshua Moriarty. They made a name for themselves before as parts of notable Aussie acts Beachwood, Slum Sociable and Miami Horror. But second of all, after only two releases we may conclude this group is really super!
Just over a year ago, the trio met at a songwriting camp, curated by Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla. They immediately clicked and decided to start a band. You may remember me praise Telenova’s debut single Bones, and now its follow-up is out as well. Another great song, with mesmerising vocals and a prominent bass line, producing a brooding atmosphere.
The lyrics are inspired by the mythological sirens, likening falling in love to the intoxicating and transfixing attraction of a siren’s call. It does so in such an addictive way, the song turns into a siren’s call itself. The musical version of the Droste effect! 😉

Wildcard (week 12):
Telenova – Bones
You may not have heard about Telenova before, but you’re not to blame. The trio only just released their debut single. How about a little introduction, then?
Telenova is front woman Angeline Armstrong, and producer/multi-instrumentalists Edward Quinn and Joshua Moriarty. Three seasoned musicians, who were in notable Aussie acts Beachwood, Slum Sociable and Miami Horror before. Comes pretty close to a super group from down under, doesn’t it? The trio first met at a songwriting camp in early 2020, curated by Death Cab for Cutie’s Chris Walla. Bringing together their respective music worlds, they immediately connected. This resulted in a refreshing and distinctive sound. A symphonic fusion of classy indie-rock with a splash of modern disco.
Their own description is: ‘cinema for your ears’. A further explanation reads: ‘a silver screen dreamscape of ‘70s chords, haunting melodies, cinematic song-writing and nostalgic trip-hop beats’.
In a press release, Armstrong said the genesis of first single Bones stemmed from the percussive intro, sounding like ‘rattling bones’. “It reminded me of this feeling I’ve had of being so trapped inside my own head, my own skin and bones. We started to envision this elaborate narrative of melancholia and longing, a girl trapped in her own bones… her own disillusionment.”
Telenova’s debut single Bones will feature prominently at the top of this blog for a full seven days. It’s this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!
