Temples – Paraphernalia[flag country="gb"]
âIâd always been a fan of the band. Had seen them play some pretty great shows over the years. When I first heard the demo for Paraphernalia I knew they had a great tune.â
These are the words of Sean Ono Lennon, who produced Templesâ new single. It was mixed by Dave Fridmann (Tame Impala, MGMT, OK Go).
Speaking of the inspiration behind the track, Templesâ lead singer James Bagshaw says, âIn an age of constant distraction, we all strive to find focus and a sense of calm. Paraphernalia questions the depth of ârealâ connections in a digital world.â
Since Dutch drummer Rens Ottink entered the band, theyâre a quartet. Fun fact: Rens comes from a musical family. His brother Chiel Ottink (who performs as Thomas Berge) is a popular Dutch folk singer.

Temples – Youâre Either On Something[flag country="gb"]
Ahead of their third studio album Hot Motion (due out on 27 September), British band Temples just released its second single. Being a psychedelic pop band, recent single Hot Motion leaned more towards psychedelic, whereas Youâre Either On Something is more pop. That may not be good news for hardcore fans, but it certainly is for a band that deserves to make a next step in their career. Good stuff!
Frontman James Bagshaw says about it: “I’m really proud of You’re Either On Something lyrically. On that track, I can hear influences of stuff that I listened to when I was growing up. There’s almost a nostalgia to that track, even though it’s very forward-looking. (âŠ) Youâre Either On Something tackles the theme of bliss, and the perception of peopleâs experiences of it. We delved into the idea that some people are inherently carefree, and others more anxious. Some people may use a chemical cocktail to reach a blissful state.â

Wildcard (week 47):
Chloe & The Brainwaves – Mind Running Wild[flag country="gb"]
Chloe Gardner, Michael Potts, Lewis Cooke and Alex Baker have been playing in various bands together since their teens. The Sunderland-based quartetâs latest guise is called Chloe & The Brainwaves. They cite influences ranging from Jeff Buckley to Joni Mitchell and Soundgarden to Big Thief. Me, I also hear bands like Fleetwood Mac, First Aid Kit and Temples shining through. And if you like this new track, youâll probably fall for Wings Of Love by Liv (a highlight from 2016) as well.
Mind Running Wild is only C&TBâs sophomore single. Itâs a dreamy indie-rock song that pairs haunting vocals with stunning guitar riffs and killer melodies. A combination that gives the song a â90s, The Cranberries kind of feel. The rather dark musical backdrop mirrors the raw honesty of Chloeâs lyrics about childhood trauma endured in silence. Ultimately however, itâs a song of hope.
As the band explain: âMind Running Wild is about coming to terms with the trauma of psychological and sexual abuse endured as a child and the emptiness and shame it leaves behind. Through government cuts, funding to Mental Health services make it impossible for victims to access the help they desperately need. Then they battle with addictions and misunderstood negative manifestations that follow them throughout adulthood, leaving adult victims of childhood sexual abuse without a voice. This song is a glimmer of hope for those people. Speaking to a safe person or counsellor can help relieve the weight that is often carried as a secret for decades. You are not alone.â
Mind Running Wild by Chloe & The Brainwaves is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. This implies that it will be prominently displayed at the top of the blog for an entire week.

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)[flag country="##"]
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!

Your favourites (2020)
My container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020 doesnât only include all of the 994 songs I recommended last year. It also holds the 100 best tracks in my opinion, the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020, which I published yesterday. But thatâs only my selection. Isnât it more interesting to see which of my recommendations you read the most? In other words: what were your favourites in 2020?
I think itâs funny to see the Carte Blanche Music blog has a strong archive function. Thatâs apparent from the number of older posts you still like to visit (and which you find via search engines). A good example is the best read article this year: ToukassĂ© by Shanguy. It stems from 2019, just like 24 other entries in the list below. Even more impressing is La Roi De Murphy, Belgian songstress AngĂšleâs debut single from 2017 (also her break-through), which is still among the 20 most read blogs in 2020.
Thank you for being such loyal visitors of Carte Blanche Music. Don’t miss a single recommendation by following me on Twitter, Facebook or, new for 2021, Instagram! Iâll do my best to make sure those accounts will soon be your favourites too, just like the tracks below:

Carte Blanche Music Top 2020
Ahead of your favourites among this yearâs Carte Blanche Music recommendations, which Iâll publish tomorrow, these are my personal choices from the songs that came out in 2020. This list holds only 100 tracks, but you can find all of my 994 recommendations in my container playlist Carte Blanche Music 2020.
As always, I love to share some statistics about the Carte Blanche Music Top 2020. These findings are further evidence of the fact that the music radio stations play for you is far from representative of the wealth of great new music out there. Thankfully, there are blogs like Carte Blanche Music that are independent and unbiased, and donât want to please everybody at the same time. Weâre here to surprise you with great new music, no matter what genre or gender, origin or orientation. Just a few statistics:
- Judging from this Top 100 alone (let alone the full container playlist), 2020 was a great year for pure pop music, young artists, â80s influences, independent releases, the Australian music scene, queer pop-rock and female vocalists
- A whopping 70% of the tracks in this yearâs list feature female lead vocals (and I thought the 60% in the Carte Blanche Music Top 2019 was impressive already)
- Overall, rock ruled. 54% of the tracks in my year-end chart is guitar-based (just over last yearâs tally)
- The list clearly shows there are more countries that produce great artists than Great-Britain and the United States alone. This year, more nationalities than ever are represented in my Top 100. Youâll also find artists from Armenia, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland
- As a result, although most lyrics are in English, youâll also hear songs (partly) sung in French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish
The Carte Blanche Music Top 2020 features 100 tracks, which are presented below in alphabetical order. You can listen to them all via the Spotify player. If you prefer another order, just use the shuffle button đ.
Meanwhile, you can read my original recommendations through the links below.
