Trunky Juno – Hawaiian Pizza
Following a new series of strong singles, Trunky Juno just released his sophomore EP Good Dog. Less than 12 minutes long, it contains four songs, including Daddyâs Gone For Cigarettes.
Hawaiian Pizza is the British artistâs new single. Although it deals with a controversial pizza topping, the song itself is built with undisputed ingredients:
- Lo-fi bedroom pop: check
- A healthy dose of Americana: check
- A gigantic hook: check
- Clever lyrics: check
In other words: another great track that ticks all the right boxes.

Trunky Juno – Daddyâs Gone For Cigarettes
Remember Jamaicaâs 2010 single I Think I Like U2? You donât? Go be ashamed of yourself! One of the things that made it such a big tune were the phased guitars. I guess I havenât heard any of those since then. BUT: hereâs another track with phased guitars, and once again itâs a big tune. Iâd say there must be a causal relationshipâŠ
Iâm talking about Trunky Junoâs new single Daddyâs Gone For Cigarettes. Trunky who? Let me tell you a little secret: heâll also turn his head when you call him Mark Owens. After releasing his first single Small Town in 2019, he collected his subsequent singles on the EP Too Many Teeth.
Daddyâs Gone For Cigarettes is an all-new track, his first of 2021. Itâs about wanting to escape reality for a little while – or maybe even forever. A very relatable subject nowadays. The artist explains: âSometimes we all feel like going out to buy cigarettes and never coming home. Escaping reality by shaving your head and moving to a farm in the Outer Hebrides. Or maybe just turning your phone off for a few days. I loved the phrase âDaddyâs gone for cigarettesâ so much and decided to write a track around it. It took a really long time to get it right, but I hope the message is one the average anxious millennial cowboy/cowgirl out there can enjoy.â
With this track, Trunky Juno continues his exploration of lo-fi bedroom pop, but injects it with a healthy dose of Americana, while adding a gigantic hook. In that respect, Iâll go as far as comparing Daddyâs Gone For Cigarettes with Beckâs Loser, which was a huge (radio) hit. Hopefully my friends at radio will tune in to this one as well. And if they donât, weâll have to stream the hell out of it ourselves, donât we?

Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites (2017-2022)
The last six years, starting in 2017, I posted 10 musical recommendations per week on this blog. A total of well over 3.000 tracks, mostly by upcoming â often female (fronted) – artists from all over the world. As I explained yesterday, Carte Blanche Music is entering a new era. One in which Iâll focus my efforts on my constantly updated Spotify playlist.
For sure, that doesnât mean the blog is closing down. Itâll continue to be the home of my âbest ofâ collection (Wernerâs Weekly) on Monday mornings (CET) and my favourite new track (the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard), every Wednesday morning. Also, Iâll post the latest additions to my playlist on Saturdays. For updates, follow me on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
No better way to round up the last six years than by publishing the Your âAll-Timeâ Favourites, a chart compiling the 500 most popular (as in best-read) Carte Blanche Music recommendations from 2017 to 2022. Youâll find the Top 25 below, but click through for the full list. My original recommendations are behind the links. If youâre an artist, donât be shy and search (Ctrl+F) to find out if you made the list. You might be surprisedâŠ
Enjoy and thanks for joining the ride so far. Follow the Carte Blanche Music playlist (click ââ„â in Spotify) for many more recommendations to come!
