The Waterboys – If The Answer Is Yeah
You know what a chameleon is, right? The animal that can change his appearance, I mean. Some bands change musical styles like chameleons change colours. Like Arcade Fire, recently. Pretty unexpectedly, I must say. Just as unexpectedly – and unrecognisably – The Waterboys re-appear to the scene.
The Scottish band, known for all-time favourites like The Whole Of The Moon, A Girl Called Johnny, A Man Is In Love and The Return Of Pan, has shaken off its folk roots and returns with… a pop song.
As you’ve come to expect from The Waterboys, it’s a decent (pop) song. One can only hope it doesn’t ‘disappear’ against the background of the current pop music climate…

The Spitfires – Save Me
It’s no news this whole COVID-19 thing sucks. And the lack of support for the industries that have been hit the hardest – culture, entertainment and events – is appalling. Especially since these are exactly the activities that are good for peoples’ mental health. So sad many enterprises and individuals in these sectors, worldwide, have been left in the cold.
British band The Spitfires are amongst the victims of this injustice. Last month, in a farewell letter to their fans, they announced their split. The band wrote: ‘Under the current climate of uncertainty within the music industry and the lack of support, the band can no longer function in the way we require, to move forward’.
25 February, The Sp(l)itfires will release their final album Play For Today. A record that will see them go out with a bang. Produced by Simon Dine (Dexys Midnight Runners, Paul Weller, The Waterboys), it’ll combine influences from new wave, 2 Tone and Britpop, with electronic hooks and big choruses. Advance single Save Me has the wonderful, baggy Madchester vibe of 1990. It sets the tone for the long-player, exploring escapism in a warped, conservative version of suburbia. A great example of what wasted talent sounds like.

Louis Berry – Are You Alone?
Louis Berry launched a great new single, but alas it was largely overlooked last New Music Friday. It’s called Are You Alone? and I’d like to draw your attention to it. Especially because the title is appropriate in a sad way. In a message to his fans, Louis announced he caught COVID-19 ‘in a bad way’, and so has his 88-year-old grandad. They’re both in hospital right now. Hopefully, they can draw strength from the energy and power in this new single.
I bet he’ll get better. He’s a survivor. Louis was born in Liverpool to a heroin addict father and a mother desperate to keep him on the right side of the law. He once said about his youth: “The only way I could get respect was by doing bad things.” Luckily, he eventually turned to music. Good for him; good for us.
I’ve been following Louis since his 2015 single .45. That was a blues-rock track. His new single Are You Alone? is another upbeat banger, and just a rootsy. It’s folky in a Waterboys kind of way. You won’t regret taking 3 minutes of your time to get to know this one.
Get well soon Louis, and your grandad too!

Gang Of Youths – Unison
If you ever wondered how a mix of The Waterboys and The War On Drugs might sound, look no further. Gang Of Youths’ new single Unison is it.
The band was formed in Sydney, Australia in 2011. They quickly attracted a rabid fanbase with their expansive, widescreen take on indie-rock. After winning prestigious ARIA Awards in their home country, they started to conquer the rest of the world (which is a work in progress). In 2017, the band – consisting of Dave Le’aupepe (vocals, guitar), Max Dunn (bass), Jung Kim (guitar, keyboards), Donnie Borzestowski (drums) and Tom Hobden (keyboards, guitar, violin) – relocated to London.
Their new single Unison is a song Le’aupepe conceived in Samoa, his ancestral homeland. It contains samples of recordings made by David Fanshawe. He travelled to the Pacific Islands in the late 1970s and recorded one of the most extensive libraries of indigenous Pasifika music anywhere in the world. The same kind of field work Alan Lomax did ahead of World War 2. These samples bring a unique and wonderful atmosphere to the track. Unison may prove to be for indie-rock what acts like Deep Forest and Moby were to dance music in the ‘90s: ground-breaking.

You Am I – The Waterboy
Remember the band Silverchair? They named themselves after a You Am I song. Yes, YAI’s career is that long already. Formed in December 1989, they were one of the most successful and admired Australian bands of the ‘90s.
Their latest studio album, Porridge And Hot Sauce, dates from 2015, but a follow-up is on its way. Recorded during the pandemic, the band members recorded their parts individually. The as-yet untitled record is due out later this year, but the Aussies just shared its rocking lead single. Entitled The Waterboy, the new song indeed takes inspiration from The Waterboys themselves. The lyrics directly reference the band’s front man Mike Scott.
