whenyoung – Never Let Go
2018 was a good year for Irish-born, London-based band whenyoung. Their debut single Pretty Pure was a banger straight away, just like their first EP Given Up, which featured follow-up Heaven On Earth.
Never Let Go is the band’s first offering of the new year. Vocalist and bassist Aoife Power explains: “It’s a song about mental health and hope. It’s a message to let people know that you can share your pain with others. It’s a reminder that someone is always there for you even in the darkest times. There is always a reason to not let go.”
The band photo on the artwork shows what you can also hear in the music: it has become more stylish, more sophisticated. The guitars are less prominent in the mix, in favour of synths. This gives the song a fuller sound, ready for radio and hopefully a next step towards the masses.
If you happen to be at showcase festival ESNS in Groningen, the Netherlands: tomorrow (18 January) they play in venue Vrijdag from 10:50PM. See you there!

whenyoung – Heaven On Earth
whenyoung was formed in 2016 after Aoife Power (vocals, bass), Niall Burns (guitar) and Andrew Flood (drums), all hailing from the Irish town of Limerick, had moved to London.
Heaven On Earth is the follow-up to Pretty Pure. Another infectious rock banger full of melody and great hooks.

whenyoung – Pretty Pure
Aoife Power (vocals, bass), Niall Burns (guitar) and Andrew Flood (drums) originate from the Irish city of Limerick, that’s probably best-known for the fact that it was The Cranberries’ home town as well. They first met as teenagers in the only indie bar in town, and when Niall moved to London, Aoife and Andrew followed him. There, they began writing songs together. In 2016 they formed their band whenyoung.
The band only have a few releases to their name. In fact, Pretty Pure is only their fourth single. Like their other songs, it combines melodic rock music with great pop hooks. Think Blondie, The Bangles or, more recently, Pip Blom.

Abbie Ozard – Breakdowns
Lauran Hibberd, whenyoung and Phoebe Green have all featured in these columns before. That same scene now produces Abbie Ozard, whom I praised before as well.
Following 2019’s Growing Pains EP, she just released her second EP, Let’s Play Pretend. It collects the Manchester-based artist’s latest three indie hits, and comes with her new single Breakdowns. Another obvious indie-pop hit, it features some heavy synth bass. The track was co-written and produced by Easy Life collaborator Ben Matarvers.
Breakdowns is an observational track, as explained by Abbie: “I wrote this tune after a massive conversation about Generation Z. I’m intensely guilty of the accusations we make in this song – how life is online, and how we deal with our problems through social media. (…) I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s found the word breakdown relatable recently…”

Wildcard (week 43):
Abbie Ozard – True Romance
If you like artists like Lauran Hibberd and whenyoung (I happen to love them!), do listen to Abbie Ozard as well. After years of writing and playing music in and outside of school, she won a song-writing competition in her hometown. Subsequently, the now Manchester-based artist began to independently release music in 2018. Gradually, she developed her own gritty, ‘80s and ‘90s inspired indie-pop style, with the help of co-producer Rich Turvey (Oscar Lang, Vistas, Blossoms).
True Romance, named after the Quentin Tarantino-written movie from 1993, is Abbie Ozard’s new single. An escapist, upbeat track with guitars, drums and bass equally prominent in the mix.
Just like its predecessor TV Kween, it’s a song that’s romanticising what is actually happening. She explains: “Growing up and living in a small town has made me dream of better things, and being a better person outside the bubble that I live in at the moment. I feel like I’m constantly having some form of identity crisis. I watched True Romance and thought ‘fuck, i just want to be Alabama in this film’ and live this mad life with a cool leopard print coat on and a pink Cadillac. Hopefully one day I’ll be happy with everything that’s going on and the way I am, but for now I’m just gonna carry on wishing I was in True Romance.”
This week, True Romance by Abbie Ozard is the Carte Blanche Music Wildcard!

European Border Breakers Chart 21 September 2018
Summer has come to an end, and so has the eight-week period that El Profesor spent at the top of the European Border Breakers Chart. That’s hardly a surprise, as the new #1, Electric City by Silk City feat. Dua Lipa, entered the Top 100 at a record-breaking #2 last week.
Elsewhere in the chart, we find 27 (re)entries, 13 of which spend their very first week in the Top 100. Another great showcase of emerging European artists that are beginning to become successful outside their home countries. My special recommendations of this bunch? Whenyoung, Pale Waves and that former Carte Blanche Music Wildcard by BC Unidos (pictured) feat. US Girls & Ledinsky.
These are all 13 first-timers:
#13: L Devine – Peer Pressure
#18: James Hype feat. Craig David – No Drama
#46: Col3trane – Resume
#55: Lil Halima – Jasmine
#69: BC Unidos (feat. US Girls & Ledinsky) – Take It Easy
#71: Kiddo feat. Decco – Drunk And I Miss You
#72: Pale Waves – One More Time
#82: Nana Rogues feat. Not3s & WizKid – To The Max
#87: AJ x Deno feat. EO – London
#88: ADP feat. Ebenezer & B Young Kranium – Movie
#92: Sons Of Raphael – A Nation Of Bloodsuckers
#97: whenyoung – Given Up
#98: The Blaze – RISE

Your favourites (June 2018)
In Western Europe, the month of June was sunnier and dryer than ever before. But the Carte Blanche Music stats reveal that didn’t hurt your hunger for new music.
The Top 10 most read blogs contains artists that range from extremely young and upcoming (10-year-old eMMa) to older and well-known (Elvis Costello). Eight of the ten tracks are by emerging artists though.
Dutchman Yorick van Norden tops this chart, and elsewhere, we find acts from Spain, the United States, Norway, Australia, Great Britain and even Poland.
English is the most common language of course, but I’m thrilled the list also features songs with lyrics in Swedish and Polish. Musically, there is a great variety as well.
These were your ten favourites in June:
- Yorick van Norden – More Than Words
- Maicø – Hey Hey
- Lead Pony – Soul Sucker
- Your.Regular.Boy. – Get Down Make Love
- Buika – Deadbeat
- eMMa – Fått Deg På Hjernen
- Kira Puru – Molotov
- whenyoung – Heaven On Earth
- Dawid Podsiadło – Małomiasteczkowy
- Elvis Costello (feat. The Roots) – Someone Else’s Heart
All of the above, and many more, can be found in my 2018 container playlist Carte Blanche Music, that is constantly updated. It includes the (almost 600) best new tracks of the year so far, providing you with nearly 35 hours of sheer joy. If you agree, you’re very welcome to subscribe and/or share.
