Young Gun Silver Fox – Kids
If you’re into Westcoast music, these are great times. Check Shawn Lee’s recent solo album Rides Again, for instance. Or look forward to Mamas Gun’s upcoming album, due to be released this spring. In a classic case of ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’, MG frontman Andy ‘young gun’ Platts and Shawn ‘silver fox’ Lee are also in a band together.
Next Friday, 21 February, Young Gun Silver Fox release their new album Canyons. This third collaborative record effortlessly combines laid-back ‘70s Westcoast music with a pinch of ‘80s pop. A golden formula that already convinced many fans of bands like The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Hall & Oates and Steely Dan.
Do you have no idea what this sounds like? The album’s new single Kids gives the answer. A great radio tune once again, which even contains a vocal sampling effect that reminds me of my beloved Prefab Sprout. Onwards and upwards to world domination!

Wildcard (week 30):
Young Gun Silver Fox (feat. Seaweed Horns) – Kingston Boogie
I admit, it would be a horrible thing to do, but what would happen if bands like Hall & Oates, Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, and Ace were thrown in a blender? It would give a mess, obviously, but musically, something deliciously juicy would come out. Luckily for us (and for the artists especially) it’s not necessary to do that blender thing, because the band whose sound incorporates all of the above (and more) has already stood up. And the best part is: despite of all these well-known ingredients they don’t sound like clones, but are a phenomenon in their own right.
I’m talking about Young Gun Silver Fox, of course, like I did before, when I recommended Lolita, Midnight In Richmond and Take It Or Leave It. All of these tracks can be found on the band’s latest album AM Waves, but they decided to save the best for last. My favourite album track, Kingston Boogie, is YGSF’s new single. An über sunny, sophisticated dance tune, and one of the tracks on the album to feature a horn section, the Seaweed Horns. In short: what’s not to love about this song?
Kingston Boogie by Young Gun Silver Fox is this week’s Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, meaning you can find and enjoy it here in only one mouse click. Wondering what other fine tunes were hand-picked as this blog’s ‘powerplay’? You can find them all in the Wildcards 2018 playlist.

Young Gun Silver Fox – Take It Or Leave It
Young Gun Silver Fox’s second album AM Waves was a ‘greatest hits’ album the moment it was released (which was yesterday). It features the singles that ‘young gun’ Andy Platts and Shawn ‘silver fox’ Lee released in 2017: Lolita, Midnight In Richmond and Lenny, all of which got their fair share of airplay and landed the duo sold-out venues all over Europe.
Fourth single Take It Or Leave It sounds like their next hit. It’s 100% original, and 100% recognizable at the same time. One second into the track you think you’re tapping along with The Doobie Brothers’ What A Fool Believes, while elsewhere your brain is tricked into singing Hall & Oates’ Kiss On My List. Pure pop bliss of the timeless kind!

Young Gun Silver Fox – Midnight In Richmond
Earlier this year, Young Gun (Andy Platts) Silver Fox (Shawn Lee) released the single Lolita, that was not on their album West End Coast. Although that CD contains a few more single worthy songs, the band appears to have moved on. That is, what else could I conclude from their new single being brand new as well?
‘Brand new’ must of course be interpreted with some flexibility, because Young Gun Silver Fox’s music sounds like it has been produced in the 70’s of the last century. The fact radio still loves it, only means the band managed to give it a magical timeless touch.
If Midnight In Richmond is your first encounter with this band, and you like it, then you can drag their whole repertoire into your playlist. And if you want to know where this is coming from, just look up some Eagles and Steely Dan tunes. You’ll like it, I give you my word!
Young Gun Silver Fox – Lolita
It’s about time Young Gun Silver Fox got their well-deserved break-through. The band consists of ‘young gun’ Andy Platts (of Mamas Gun fame) and producer/multi-instrumentalist Shawn ‘silver fox’ Lee. They make classic melodic soulful pop, drenched in sunny harmonies.
Listen to their album West End Coast (the title combines ‘West End’, the London district where Lee has his studio, with ‘West Coast’, which is an obvious influence for the duo) and you know how that sounds. Or just start your journey with their brand new single, that is not on the album. The follow-up to You Can Feel It, Emilia, Long Way Back and See Me Slumber is entitled Lolita.
Mamas Gun – Looking For Moses
It’s hard to believe four years went by since Mamas Gun dropped their latest album Golden Days. The success of front man Andy Platts’ side project Young Gun Silver Fox is to blame for this long absence. Although that band isn’t sitting still either, now is the time for Mamas Gun to claim back the spotlights. Their first single in two years, Looking For Moses, seems perfectly fit for purpose. It’s the first track off the band’s next album Cure The Jones, which will be out on 1 April 2022.
If you think Looking For Moses echoes the sound of Bill Withers, you’re right. The song was written on the day he passed away, and is meant to be an ode to the great soul man. Although other classic soul artists like Marvin Gaye and Labi Siffre also had their share in inspiring the song, it ultimately sounds like a trademark Mamas Gun tune. It’s lush, sophisticated, groovy and beautifully crafted. Contemporary soul with an old heart, taped on analogue gear to best preserve the warmth and energy of the recording session. Another job well-done!

Mamas Gun – Golden Days
Exactly one year after its first single, Mamas Gun’s album Golden Days yields a fifth single. A good old case of saving the best for last, the album’s title track has been chosen to follow in the footsteps of I Need A Win, London Girls, You Make My Life A Better Place, and On The Wire. Golden Days is another one of the band’s trademark modern soul tracks, co-written by Christopher Braide (Sia, Lana Del Rey, Paloma Faith).
If you’re a fan of singer-songwriter Andy Platts’s other project Young Gun Silver Fox, but didn’t know Mamas Gun yet, this is a great introduction. Satisfaction guaranteed!

Mamas Gun – I Need A Win
Singer-songwriter and producer Andy Platts is both the front man of Mamas Gun and the ‘young gun’ in Young Gun Silver Fox. On Mamas Gun’s fourth album Golden Days (out on 23 February), the sound of the two projects connects better than ever before, undoubtedly appealing to both bands’ audiences. Throughout the record (yes, it’ll also be released on vinyl), Mamas Gun’s funky soul sound merges seamlessly with the west coast influences in Young Gun Silver Fox’s music.
One of the reasons may be, that ‘silver fox’ Shawn Lee lends a helping hand, alongside Andy Ross and Dominic Glover of horn section the Dap-Kings and songwriters Connor Reeves (Tina Turner, Joss Stone, Joe Cocker) and Christopher Braide (Sia, Lana Del Rey, Paloma Faith).
The whole album is an analog recording, and sounds like a classic soul/R&B album with a strong Motown feel to it. I Need A Win is the set’s first single.
