Wildcard (week 10):
youproblem – Avalanche[flag country="au"]
Sydney producer/drummer Alistair Hayes and singer-songwriter Alana Patmore only debuted in March 2022 as a duo. By now, theyâre five tracks into their career, and I like each and everyone of them. Their alternative indie-pop songs are characterized by lush, driving production and relatable lyricism. On Australian radio, their style had been described as âa slice of magnetic indieâ. And not only radio is fond of youproblem, their Broods-, Lauren– and Two Door Cinema Club-inspired tunes could already be heard in TV series as well.
New single Avalanche completes the duoâs first song quintet. Its delicate blend of lush guitars and spacey synths is sure to have you tapping your feet and singing along. Introspective vocals dance over the light, hoppy production, culminating in a dramatic guitar solo.
Patmore explains: âThe song is about crossing a line, saying something you canât take back, and being stuck in the consequences of that. The other person ices you out, gives you the cold shoulder, like theyâre punishing you and youâre just left in their power until they get over it.â
Avalanche by youproblem is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means itâll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

youproblem – Wasting Time[flag country="au"]
Sydney singer-songwriter Alana Patmore and producer/drummer Alistair Hayes formed youproblem at the end of 2020. Not wasting time, they spent the majority of 2021 building up their discography and honing their sound. In real DIY spirit, they write, record and produce their music themselves. They only called Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe, G-Flip) for mixing duties.
Wasting Time is the duoâs exciting debut single, and itâs a very confident one. Described by the band as âhappy cute indie alt pop vibesâ, the upbeat pop song features dark undertones over a seemingly bubbly palette. On top of all that, Alana and Alistairâs voices melt together wonderfully. The lyrics – about the pull of co-dependency, infatuation, and neglecting your responsibilities for someone else – are cheeky and relatable.
Alan explains: âWhen I fall in love, I get so addicted that it makes all my real world problems fade into the background. I start missing work, and uni, and bailing on my friends, to hang out with this one person. While fun at the time, it always ends up being a bad or wasted investment.â
