Gang Of Youths – Forbearance
After the success of their 2017 albumĀ Go Farther In Lightness, Sydney band Gang Of Youths relocated to London. They just put out their biggest statement yet,Ā their new long-player Angel In Realtime. Essentially a concept album, it explores the death of front man David Le’aupepe’s father in 2018, and the grief, guilt and acceptance surrounding it.
The record takes the five-pieceās already present ambition to a next level. Some may find the bandās stadium-sized pop/rock bombastic. Personally, Iād rather describe it with words like anthemic, epic and cinematic, thanks to the inclusion of strings, urgent drums and layers of guitar.
My favourite album track Forbearance is a good example. It has the atmosphere of U2ās With Or Without You, but with drum and bass like drum patterns.

Tippy Balady – Soul Eater
Hailing from Dallas, Tippy Balady is currently studying popular music at the University of South Carolina. She may be a solo artist, but her music is the result of a rather permanent collaboration with producer Jason Burt. Heās been helping her shape her musical vision since 2018. Together, they created the entirety of Tippy’s discography and plan on continuing to work together in the future.
Following the release of ten of Tippyās tracks, she just put out her first EP The Dallas Sessions. It contains her two 2021 singles German Boy and Family Dinners, and two brand-new songs. Soul Eater is my favourite of that pair. Itās a friendly-sounding song in that āTippycalā style: neo-soul with a bedroom pop vibe. Her strumming on the ukulele adds a folky element though, while the instrument also adds a latin kind of flavour.

Peter Stone – Cold
Pietro Carallo is an Italian singer-songwriter, musician and music producer. He started playing the piano at the age of 8, while adding singing and song-writing to his palette at 15. In 2020, he released his first single under the Peter Stone moniker.
On Christmas Eve, his debut EP Unlabeled came out. It contains his recent single Lead Me, as well as four new songs. The track Cold is a highlight in my ears. Its opening notes bring the intro of Duran Duranās Save A Prayer to mind. Elsewhere, the ā80s are omni-present as well. Check the The Weeknd-like drum fills, the propulsive synths or the guitar solo, for instance. Despite those influences however (or perhaps because of them), the song fits the current musical climate like a glove.
All in all: a track that deserves to push Peter Stoneās career firmly in the right direction.

AngĆØle – Libre
Donāt say I didnāt warn you. AngĆØleās debut album Brol was great and I wrote about many of its singles. It turned her into a pop princess, and her new album will only enhance that status. Iām curious what would happen if sheād switch to lyrics in Englishā¦
āNonante-cinqā is Walloon for ā95ā, the year of birth of the Belgian singer and songwriter. She turned 26 on 2 December, a week before her sophomore album Nonante-Cinq was scheduled to appear. However, as a last-minute present to her fans, she decided to release the record digitally on her birthday. This obviously caused some stress at her label, for the physical versions (CD and LP) werenāt ready yet. The problem was solved within a week though, even before the intended release date.
This second record is more introspective than its predecessor. It sounds like a public diary, in which she tells about the most important emotions she had in the past three years: sadness, doubt and fear. However, as weāve come to expect, she packs these themes in colourful songs that appear light-hearted. For non-French-speaking people, anyway.
The long-playerās second track is my favourite song on it. Libre deals with emancipation in the broadest sense. This includes claiming her position and taking revenge of the ones who hurt her. Musically, itās a seemingly carefree and danceable tune, with a prominent bass line that resembles Tame Impalaās The Less I Know The Better. This would be a great single!

Deap Vally – Phoenix
Ten years ago, Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards formed Deap Vally in Los Angeles. Mixing hard rock with greasy blues riffs, their sound sat somewhere between The White Stripes and The Black Keys. This landed them support slots for the likes of Muse, Peaches, Wolfmother, The Vaccines, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Following their debut single End Of The World in 2012, they released three full length albums. Last week, record #4, Marriage came out. Included are assorted tracks from the bandās 2021 EPās Digital Dream and American Cockroach plus eight completely new ones. Also, the album features guest appearances of KT Tunstall, Peaches, Jennie Vee and jennylee.
The best of the 12 songs however, is Phoenix. It pairs Deap Vallyās trademark blues-rock with a danceable groove and a slinky synth motif. With a chorus that goes āNothingās gonna take me down / Nothingās gonna break my crown / As long as I can breathe / Nothingās gonna stop meā, itās a classic, self-confident American ode to the power of the self.

Coeur De Pirate – Tu Peux Crever LĆ -Bas
Canadian singer-songwriter Béatrice Martin started her career as Her Pirate Heart, but translated that name to French when she stopped writing songs in English. That was over 13 years ago. In the meantime, Coeur De Pirate released eight studio albums, the latest of which, Impossible à Aimer, just came out.
An absolute highlight on the album is the track Tu Peux Crever LĆ -Bas, which loosely translates as: āf*ck youā. You can imagine why, if you know the story behind the song. In The HuffPost, the singer explains itās about an unfaithful old friend. āHe couldnāt choose between me and his ex, which was terrible for my confidence. I discovered he cheated on me, and finally he told me heād stay with her. I told him I hoped heād think about me when heād have sex with her.ā
Despite its not too unexplicit message, Tu Peux Crever LĆ -Bas sounds like a carefree song. But you know better nowā¦

Wyn Starks – Black Is Golden
After releasing 14 singles in just two yearsā time, Wyn Starks finally came up with his debut album Black Is Golden. A record as diverse as diversity gets, which puts an extra dose of soul in modern r&b. Meanwhile, the album combines Starksā upbringing in Minneapolis with the innovative sounds he discovered upon relocating to Nashville.
In online magazine Euphoria he explains: āWhen I say black is golden, I think about so many artists, activists, and everyday people that have inspired me. People like Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, James Baldwin, Bayard Rustin, Cornel West, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Prince, and my mother Cheryl Ann Johnson (just to name a few). Itās important we acknowledge their contributions to society, music, and the world. I stand on their shoulders. I hope that through this album I can inspire someone in the same way. Thatās why I decided to call itĀ Black Is Golden. Itās a celebration of people who have inspired me on this road to becoming Wyn Starks.ā
The title track is my favourite song on the album. It was written in response to injustice and racial inequality when it comes to black people. A track with an important message, wrapped in a sound thatās both vintage and progressive.
