Wildcard (week 11):
BC Unidos (feat. US Girls & Ledinsky) – Take It Easy
In June last year, I wrote about Bicycle by BC Unidos (feat. Shungudzo). A week later, I made it Carte Blanche Music Wildcard, and it subsequently appeared among Your Favourites for four months in a row, ending 7th in the year-end chart. After this runaway success, the duo, consisting of Swedish hit composers Patrik Berger and Markus Krunegård, collaborated with the likes of Santigold, Carly Rae Jepsen and Charli XCX on their Bicycle EP.
Apparently, they had more great names in their Rolodex: their new single Take It Easy features US Girls, who appeared on this blog multiple times, and fellow-Swede Ledinsky, whose DonaldTrumpMakesMeWannaSmokeCrack was something of a cult hit in 2016.
The track somehow reminds me of Long John Baldry’s version of (Walk Me Out In The) Morning Dew (but I’ve got a vivid imagination). Anyway, it’s a modern soul song that deserves to be embraced by many radio stations, but most importantly: by you!
For starters, Take It Easy by BC Unidos (feat. US Girls & Ledinsky) is embraced by Carte Blanche Music as this week’s Wildcard (all of which you can find in the Wildcards 2018 playlist). As a result, the track appears prominently on top of this blog until next Wildcard Wednesday!

Sennek – A Matter Of Time
Belgium has built itself a reputation at the Eurovision Song Contest. The last three years, the country ended in the Top 10, twice of which (Loïc Nottet and Blanche) in fourth position. The entry for 2018 is equally dark and broody as these Top 5 songs, so it looks like Belgium will make it four in a row.
This year’s candidate is 27-year-old Laura Groeseneken, who goes by the stage name of Sennek. In recent years she wrote songs for Hooverphonic and played keys in Ozark Henry’s band, two of my all-time favourite Belgian artists. On A Matter Of Time, Hooverphonic’s Alex Callier returns the favour. He co-wrote the tune, so it comes as no surprise that it has James Bond written all over it, although A Matter Of Time sounds a little more stripped-down, less bombastic. Producer Maxime Tribeche, who also worked with Delv!s, did a fine job at that.
Callier wrote the opening sentence ‘Sometimes it feels like it’s meant to be broken’, after he broke his beloved tea pot while making tea during the writing sessions. This event also features in the video. With a song as good as this, it’s hard to believe Sennek’s Eurovision dream will break to smithereens as well…

Hoshi – Je Vous Trouve Un Charme Fou
Only 21 years old, French singer Hoshi is a girl who knows what she wants. At 14, under a falling star, Mathilde – her real name – wished she would make it in music. Subsequently, she adopted the stage name Hoshi, Japanese for ‘star’.
Two years later, she started the rock band TransyStory, and wrote her first songs, inspired by Jacques Brel, Noir Désir, Serge Gainsbourg, and Patti Smith. One of those songs, that she posted on the internet, landed her an invitation to join television talent show ‘The Voice’. She got to the finals, but abandoned the show after being asked to sing a song that was not her cup of tea. After the press jumped upon this story, her name was made.
Last year, Hoshi released her first EP Comment Je Vais Faire and the great single Ta Marinière, preceding her debut album Il Suffit D’y Croire (out on 23 March). Je Vous Trouve Un Charme Fou is the second single off it, and a very promising one.

Lova – You Me And The Silence
Music is one of the most lucrative export products of Sweden. If you want to know more about that subject, this interesting article explains why the country dominates pop.
Now, allow me to introduce you to another promising Swedish artist. Most literally: Lova means ‘promise’. You Me And The Silence is Lova’s debut single. It’s fresh, incredibly catchy and full of productional gimmicks. A treat!

Angèle – Je Veux Tes Yeux
Last year, Angèle Van Laeken entered the pop arena with her debut single La Loi De Murphy. A fun track that crossed over to France, providing the Belgian singer-songwriter with her first hit in the European Border Breakers Chart.
New single Je Veux Tes Yeux slows things down a bit, and ticks all the right boxes for it to enter classic ‘chanson’ territory. Somehow, it also makes me think of the utterly beautiful Coward by Yael Naim.
Je Veux Tes Yeux once again crosses to France (for starters), making it Angèle’s biggest EBBChart hit to date, entering in 37th place this week. The clip passed the 1 million mark on YouTube within 10 days, so you’d better keep a keen eye on this one…

Millie Turner – The Shadow
It’s almost unbelievable Millie Turner is only 17 years old. Her music is so mature already. Last year, she debuted impressively with her single Underwater, and rose to the next level not long after with the follow-up Eyes On You. Third time lucky, her new single could (and should) be a real hit.
The Shadow is an up-tempo slice of pure pop music, begging to be remixed. Could someone please pass this on to the Pet Shop Boys? They would make a perfect match. That being said, this original version can stand on its own feet as well. Millie’s singing style demands the listener’s attention, while the radio-friendly beat makes the track equally ready for the clubs.

Peggy Gou – It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)
Korean producer Peggy Gou currently operates from Berlin. There, she works on her next EP Once, and It Makes You Forget is the first single off it. It’s the first time she ever sung on a record, which she does in her native language. The laid-back, understated way she sings forms a great part of the song’s appeal.
The track has a 90’s house vibe, with influences from disco, electro and even acid. Musically, the track has the same amount of nonchalance as the vocal parts. A winning combination.

Clara Luciani – La Grenade
Clara Luciani is an upcoming French singer. We first got to know her through her contributions to Nekfeu’s album Cyborg and the Deluxe Edition of Calogero’s Liberté Chérie, as well as her first EP Monstre D’amour, that she released last year.
Now, here’s Clara Luciani’s new single. If you like groovy bass lines and catchy melodies, this one’s for you. Based on her music so far, I’m very much looking forward to her debut album, due out in April!

Yungblud – Polygraph Eyes
As soon as Yorkshire-born Dominic Harrison is ‘on duty’, he’s Yungblud. An eclectic artist, who loves to mix musical genres, from rap metal via Britpop and ska to punk.
His eponymous 5-track debut EP already spawned three singles: King Charles; I Love You, Will You Marry Me; and Tin Pan Boy. Now, a fourth track has been put forward: Polygraph Eyes. It’s his first song where he steps off the gas.

Therapie Taxi – Cri Des Loups
With the video for their latest single Hit Sale (feat. Roméo Elvis) passing the 2 million mark on YouTube and radio only just heating up for the track, Therapie Taxi already release the follow-up.
Cri Des Loups is the second song they release in anticipation of their debut album, which is also called Hit Sale and will be released 2 February. The first single came with a video marked ‘1/3’, this new clip is marked ‘2/3’, so we can probably expect a third track soon.
