Youngr x Endor – Give It Up
Youngr is a one man band from London (via New York and Manchester), and one that really stands out. A year ago, he came to the scene with his debut single Out Of My System, but check his ’bootleg’ version of Temper Trap’s Sweet Disposition as well. On his latest single, Youngr teams up with Endor. Besides a fictive planet in the Star Wars universe, this is a 24-year-old British remixer and producer, who worked with the likes of Alma, Saint Motel and Roger Sanchez before.
Once again, the result is a stomper of a remake. The pair took the basic parts out of Lee Dorsey’s 1969 original Give It Up, sped it up and built a groovy house anthem around it. Sure to become a floorfiller on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Night Ships – Half The World
In 2014 and 2015, Dutch musician Rob Nakken travelled around the world. Everywhere he came, he recorded music with local musicians. Since then, he is putting the pieces together like a puzzle and releases the resulting songs under the moniker The Night Ships. This is basically a duo, consisting of Nakken and Australian singer Ingrid Giles.
The Night Ships’ new single Half The World features a bass part recorded in South Africa, and the sitar, tar and percussion were recorded in Iran. You’ll also hear a choir of singers from the Netherlands, United States, Canada, Uruguay, France, England and Ireland, and a violinist from Chile. Indeed, ‘half the world’ appears to be contributing to this song. World music in the most literal sense.
The lyrics of this track are a call to action to women (and men) in all countries to stand up against violence, oppression and discrimination that women face every day as half of the world’s inhabitants. It calls upon equal rights, opportunity and status. All of these ingredients make for a song that’s not only great, but extremely up-to-date as well.

Human – Higher
Human is a new Swedish pop collective fronted by Daniel Adams-Ray. Higher is their debut single. An infectious mix of blues and pop, rich in rhythm and melody, and very well-produced. In other words: a potential future Scandinavian pop hit, like so many great songs from the region.

Boy Azooga – Face Behind Her Cigarette
The groove is back in today’s music and I can’t get enough of it! Take this debut release by Boy Azooga for instance.
The band, the brainchild of Cardiff native Davey Newington, has signed with the legendary Heavenly Recordings label that discovered artists like Manic Street Preachers, Saint Etienne and Doves in the nineties.
Boy Azooga plays psychedelic indie-pop/rock and this first single pays tribute to Nigerian funk icon William Onyeabor.

Alien Stadium – This One’s For The Humans
When Steve Mason (The Beta Band) and Martin Duffy (Primal Scream) start a new project, it’s instantly interesting on paper. And after hearing Alien Stadium’s debut single, one must conclude: it’s not only an interesting project on paper.
This One’s For The Humans is a groovy, cosmic pop rock song, that already makes me look forward to their first EP Livin’ in Elizabethan Times, which comes out 1 December.

Millie Turner – Eyes On You
Only 17 years old, Millie Turner makes an impressive debut. Her songs, that she writes herself, are absolutely captivating. Earlier this year she put out her first single Underwater, so this follow-up is only her second offering.
Eyes On You is great song, that reminds me of Maggie Rogers’s Alaska. It’s powered by an acoustic guitar that would’ve fitted a modern pop dance production (à la Lost Frequencies) as well, underpinned by a deep bass line throughout. Midway, as an added bonus, a piano melody comes in that’s simple and subtle, yet so effective. And on top of all that, there’s the London singer’s mesmerizing voice.
The song could have done without the fade-out, but other than that it’s clear Millie Turner is a talent to reckon with.

Angèle – La Loi De Murphy
If you ever wondered why a slice of bread is always falling with the buttered side face-down: that’s Murphy’s Law. In general terms, it says: ‘If anything can go wrong, it will’. Murphy’s Law is a law about the opposite of coincidence. In fact, it’s about the certainty that mother nature is a bitch 😉 . The best you can do is laugh about it…
That said, Murphy’s Law was also the inspiration for a great new track. La Loi De Murphy is the debut single of 21-year-old Belgian singer Angèle Van Laeken. She’s from a musical family: her father Marka was in the band Allez Allez and her brother Roméo Elvis is a Belgian rap star. Listening to her debut single, I wouldn’t be surprised is Angèle is a fan of Christine & The Queens.
La Loi De Murphy is already an airplay hit in Belgium, and is now crossing over to France, causing the song to enter in this week’s European Border Breakers Chart. Hopefully more countries will follow, knowing that – despite its French title – most of the lyrics are in English…

Delv!s – Home Again
Belgian singer Niels Delvaux uses Delv!s as his stage name. I already wrote about his single Come My Way, and the follow-up Sunday Interlude spent one week in the European Border Breakers Chart. Not bad, but he is destined for more.
Hopefully, now is the time for Delv!s to score big, as he releases the best song off his EP No Ending (which also includes the afore-mentioned tracks) as his new single.

Témé Tan – Coups De Griffe
His given name Tanguy Haesevoets already reveals Témé Tan has roots in both Kinshasa (Congo) and Brussels (Belgium), and as an artist, he fuses those worldly roots with pop, soul, hip hop and minimalistic electronics.
His first two singles, Améthys and Ça Va Pas La Tête, leaned towards world music, whereas his third effort Coups De Griffe has more of an electronic feel. On this track he sounds like a male version of French singer Yelle, which is a compliment in my book. But hear for yourself:

Ambivalensen – Allt För Mig
Ambivalensen is a Swedish act, with singer Sandra Eberskoug as frontwoman. After their eponymous debut EP (2015) they released several singles. The latest is called Allt För Mig, which translates as ‘all for me’. A modern pop song featuring lush piano playing, some catchy whistling and a chorus so simple, that you can also sing along if you don’t know any Swedish.
This is the clip, inspired by William Shakespeare’s classical drama Romeo & Juliet.
