European Border Breakers Chart 11 January 2019
Making the last refinements before the Music Moves Europe Talent Chart is finally launched, next week, we needed to recalculate last week’s European Border Breakers Chart. Just so you know. Upon launch, all of the chart rules will be explained here very clearly, showing what a powerful tool we are developing for emerging European artists, bookers, managers, journalists, and consumers alike. Yes, I am proud! 😉
Now, one week before the rebranding officially takes place, let’s look at what’s happening in the European Border Breakers Chart one last time. You might say it goes out with a bang, opening its gate to 29 (re)entries, 13 of which are complete newcomers:
#23: Jugo Ürdens – Yugo
#34: Sea Girls – All I Want To Hear You Say
#42: Spielbergs – Five On It
#48: Kokoroko – Uman
#62: Rosalía (pictured) – Dí Mi Nombre
#63: Jada – Lonely
#65: Sophie Lloyd feat. Dames Brown – Calling Out
#66: jens – Any Other Way
#74: Aya Nakamura – La Dot
#82: You Tell Me – Clarion Call
#85: Karel – Out
#86: Amilli – Maybe
#94: Hugo Helmig – Young Like This

European Border Breakers Chart 4 January 2019
In less than two weeks, during the next edition of the ESNS conference and festival, the new Music Moves Europe Talent Chart will be launched. This chart will act as an important selection tool for the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards (MMETA). Starting today, the rules that go with that chart, will be applied to the European Border Breakers Chart, to make a smooth transition possible.
Without giving away too many details at this moment (stay tuned, folks 😉), I can tell you this: at the request of the awards committee, former winners of a European Border Breakers Award, this year’s MMETA winners and participants of the Eurovision Song Contest are no longer eligible for the new chart. As a consequence, artists like Alice Merton, The Blaze and Blanche no longer appear.
Also, the rule that tracks will automatically fall off the Top 100 after a chart run of 52 weeks, has been abandoned, allowing several tracks back in the list.
Partly because of these changes, this week’s EBBChart counts a staggering 38(!) (re)entries, 6 of which are total newcomers. Among them, for the first time, we find an emerging European act from Malta (The Travellers). This week’s Streaming Chart welcomes its first ever Croatian act (Lost Sky). Congrats!
These are all of the first-timers in the main (airplay and streaming based) Top 100:
#27: Sam Fender – Play God
#61: The Travellers – Ħafi Paċi Kuluri
#62: Umi – Friendzone
#68: Okay Kaya – Dance Like U
#80: Biig Piig – Flirt
#81: Tamino – So It Goes

European Border Breakers Chart 28 December 2018
Today, three years after its first edition, the last European Border Breakers Chart is published. That is to say: the name will change. In order to make it a perfect selection tool for potential winners of a Music Moves Europe Talent Award, some changes will be made to the new chart, which will be rebranded as the Music Moves Europe Talent Chart. More details can be found here on 4 January 2019.
However, the EBBChart goes out with a bang. One third of the Top 100 consists of (re)entries, and 9 out of those 33 are complete newcomers. Highest of them all, at #34, is this year’s surprise Christmas #1 in the UK charts. LadBaby (the moniker of successful British ‘dad blogger’ Mark Hoyle – pictured) made a new version of Starship’s 1985 hit We Built This City, with all proceeds going to the foodbanks in Great Britain.
At #98, Pale Waves also come in on the back of a cover. They add some jingle balls to Wham!’s Last Christmas.
All 9 newcomers are below:
#34: LadBaby – We Built This City
#37: The YD – Hoping
#65: Sebastian Walldén – Everything
#69: Spielbergs – 4AM
#78: Da Beatfreakz feat. AJ x Deno, Deno Swarmz & Cadet – Jumpy
#80: Lankum – What Will We Do When We Have No Money
#92: Free Money – U Got Me
#93: Drpeura – This Year
#98: Pale Waves – Last Christmas
#99: Fauness – Sixteen

European Border Breakers Chart 21 December 2018
Although Sigrid is closing in, she is not yet able to give a ‘sucker punch’ to Silk City feat. Dua Lipa, who remain on top of the European Border Breakers Chart with Electricity. More sensation is to be found in this week’s Streaming Chart, where Czech artist Zayo ‘pulls an Angèle’, by entering with all 11 tracks off his last week released album Navzdy Mlady. Apart from his home country, the album streams very well in Slovakia.
Looking more closely at the overall Top 100, which combines airplay and streaming data, we once again see a huge amount of 28 (re)entries. Six of those tracks make their maiden voyage. Most notable are the two entries by Daughter singer Elena Tonra’s solo project Ex:Re, bringing her total number of tracks in the chart to four.
All six newcomers can be found below:
#41: Giant Rooks – Wild Stare
#56: Wwwater – Screen
#59: Shy Martin – Just A Little Longer
#86: Crewel Intentions – Youth And Overload
#89: Ex:Re – Too Sad
#94: Ex:Re – 5AM

European Border Breakers Chart 14 December 2018
At the end of the year, people tend to look back. This applies both to radio stations and – to a lesser extent – to streamers. As a result, the main European Border Breakers Chart, which combines airplay and streaming data, counts many tracks that were released in the past half year or so, re-entering the Top 100. This week, no less than 23 on a total of 30 (re)entries have been in the chart earlier.
And even amid those seven first-timers, there’s rather little variation, as Ex:Re (the solo project of Elena Tonra (pictured), singer of British indie pop band Daughter) enters with three tracks, bringing her total to five positions in this week’s Top 100. All seven newcomers are below:
#25: Charlotte Adigéry – Paténipat
#42: BenjiFlow – Deep End
#53: Ex:Re – Where The Time Went
#82: Ex:Re – New York
#83: Stereo Honey – Icarus
#92: Ex:Re – I Can’t Keep You
#95: Jo Wedin – Maybe Not Tomorrow

European Border Breakers Chart 7 December 2018
This week, all of the 31(!) (re)entries in the European Border Breakers Chart land in the bottom half of the Top 100. 13 of those 31 make their maiden trip into the chart.

Perfect Son’s (pictured) debut single It’s For Life comes in at #50, powered by airplay in Spain, Switzerland, Latvia and neighbouring country Slovakia. Polish acts Me And That Man (with four tracks), The Deyna Family and Branko only reached the Tips by Country Chart before.
European Border Breakers Award winner Alice Merton and chart regulars like Nana Adjoa, Tamino and Sam Fender also make an entrance this week. These are all 13 newcomers:

European Border Breakers Chart 30 November 2018
While Silk City feat. Dua Lipa reign supreme on the overall European Border Breakers Chart (which combines airplay and streaming data), the dedicated Streaming Chart offers a surprise this week. There, upcoming Belgian superstar Angèle and her brother Roméo Elvis take over the crown with their single Tout Oublier. Impressive in its own right, but especially for a track in French!
The overall chart in turn surprises with a huge number of (re)entries. The are 29 newcomers this week, no less than 19 of which were never in the Top 100 before. In other words, there is a lot of new music by emerging European acts to discover this week.
You can listen to (and share) all of the tracks below via the combined play/share button behind each song at www.europeanborderbreakerschart.eu, but this is what it looks like on paper:
#4: Los Unidades feat. Pharrell Williams & Jozzy – E-Lo

European Border Breakers Chart 23 November 2018
While Electricity by Silk City feat. Dua Lipa appears to be untouchable at the top of the European Border Breakers Chart (and is likely to occupy the pole position for the rest of the year), elsewhere in the Top 100 we find 28 (re)entries. Will one of these future hits be the next ascendant to the throne?
11 of those newcomers are tracks that haven’t been in the EBBChart before. Obviously, I’m especially proud of Jade Bird’s former Carte Blanche Music Wildcard Love Has All Been Done Before. But this week’s highest entry is noteworthy as well, as Piroshka (pictured) is essentially an indie supergroup, featuring former members of British nineties indie bands Lush, Moose, Modern English and Elastica.
Check all of this week’s 11 newcomers below:
#34: Piroshka – Everlastingly Yours
#45: Flynn – My Gold
#56: Huxlxy – Horror Movies
#57: Funky Kingston feat. Marjo Leinonen – Hommat Tuntuu Sujuvan
#58: 2nd Blood – Type 9000
#65: Jade Bird – Love Has All Been Done Before
#66: Blanche – Moment
#78: YOTA: Youth Of The Apocalypse – In The Future
#85: Rohey – Can’t Get This
#89: The Blockparty feat. Esko – Huts
#97: Rimon – Sugarcoated Love

European Border Breakers Chart 16 November 2018
Let’s talk about a real European Border Breakers Chart success story: this week, Belgian singer Angèle (pictured) lands all 12 tracks off her debut album Brol in the Top 16 of the Streaming Chart. This is an even better score than 5 weeks ago. Then, just after her album’s release, all 12 tracks appeared in the chart’s Top 18. Looks like Belgium produced a new pop star!
I’m sure Angèle would have received a European Border Breakers Award for this feat, but alas that prize is no more. Therefore, for the record: Angèle is by far Belgium’s most successful emerging artist of the last year, and even on a European scale, the impressive performance of all of her album’s tracks is unprecedented.
Looking at the other 88 positions in the overall Top 100, which incorporates airplay and streaming, we find 24 (re)entries. Exactly half of those tracks have never been in the chart before:
#27: Lewis Capaldi – Someone You Loved
#46: Between Mountains – Into The Dark
#56: Drenchill feat. Indiiana – Freed From Desire
#61: Komodo – Bengali Crown
#63: Kamferdrops – Svake Mennesker
#70: Unknown T – Homerton B
#72: Famke Louise – Op Me Monnie
#82: Gyda – Moonchild
#84: ViVii – Suckerpunch
#89: Suzi Wu – Grim Reaper
#94: Altın Gün – Cemalim
#100: Prospa – Prayer
