Alma – Dye My Hair
One week before the start of this blog, Almaās Dye My Hair was the last Wildcard of 2016. Now that Iāve seen her perform at showcase festival Eurosonic Noorderslag, last Thursday, I feel the urge to bring it to your attention as yet. Consider it my present to her, because today, 17 January, itās her birthday. Happy 21st anniversary Alma!
Alma is Finnish singer-songwriter Alma-Sofia Miettinen. A few years ago, when she was 17, she participated in television talent show Idols, where she finished fifth. Last summer, at the age of 20, she released her debut single Karma. A great track with equal parts deep house, r&b and pop, that went on to become a huge hit in the European Border Breakers Charts. Actually, it was this one track that landed her at Eurosonic Noorderslag; there simply was nothing more to judge at the timeā¦
The festival bookers did a good job giving Alma this platform. She has a great voice, that is even enhanced on stage by her sister, who doubles pretty much all vocals. Their voices go very well together. Behind the singing pair, the beats are produced by three musicians behind launch pads, one of whom also plays guitar.
And now, there is this second single, Dye My Hair. It contains the same infectious ingredients as her debut, and deserves to become her breakthrough hit. Once that has happened, a re-release of Karma would be a great idea!

European Border Breakers Chart 13 January 2017
This week the European Border Breakers Awards were handed out to the most successful debuting artists out of Europe. This is clearly reflected in this weekās European Border Breakers Charts. Dua Lipa, who wasnāt only the most successful new artist from the UK last year, but also received the Public Choice Award, enters the chart at an impressive #9 with her new single Thinking ābout You. Itās her fourth consecutive top 10 hit in the EBBChart. Meanwhile, her latest hit Blow Your Mind (Mwah) also boomerangs back into the top 10.
Elsewhere, the chart sees (re)entries by EBBA winners Filous and Jain, while tracks by Alan Walker, Walking On Cars and Namika are on their way up again.
For the complete Top 100, click the āEBBChartā tab at the top of this blog (loading may take a little while). For more charts (like the Bubbling Under, which ranks the tracks that are on their way to the Top 100), please visit http://www.europeanborderbreakerscharts.eu/. Dua Lipa – Thinking ābout You
Talking about the European Border Breakers Chart: Dua Lipa already has three top 5 hits under her belt: Be The One, Hotter Than Hell and Blow Your Mind (Mwah). This makes her easily the most successful emerging British artist of the last year, good for a European Border Breakers Award. And she hasnāt even released her debut album yet! This self-titled cd will only come out on 10 February (UPDATE 11 January: the release has been pushed back to 2 June).
In the meantime, while Be The One is re-released in the UK, the rest of Europe is being serviced with a new single. Thinking ābout You shows a slowed down, classy, timeless side of the pop princess. And one that fits her well. Is it 10 February already?

European Border Breakers Chart 6 January 2017
From now on, each Friday Iāll publish the new European Border Breakers Chart on Carte Blanche Music. It is one mouse click away under the āEBBChartā tab at the top of this blog, where youāll find it in downloadable and printable PDF format.
Only debuting European artists can enter the European Border Breakers Chart, with releases that are not older than two years. The chart is based on airplay outside the artistās home country by 50 tastemaker radio stations across 33 countries all over Europe. This makes the EBBC the quickest chart around and the best place to discover new talent.
This weekās chart counts no less than 17 (re)entries. Thatās an extraordinary number, but not inexplicable. After the Christmas period, the jingle bells and year-end charts, radio makers are eager to catch up with new music.
Amidst re-entries by The Hunna, Her, Izzy Bizu, Vant, and EBBA winners Namika and Natalie La Rose among others, only three tracks are totally new to the chart.
Check which ones by hitting the āEBBChartā tab at the top of this blog (loading may take a little while). For more charts, features and information, go to www.europeanborderbreakerscharts.eu, where you can listen to all tracks and share them as well!
