European Border Breakers Chart 2 November 2018
The fun part of the European Border Breakers Chart is that it is totally unlike any other chart around. Not only because it only features emerging European artists who are successful outside their home country, but also because that starting point gives visibility to a whole new generation of pop stars, before their break-through. In other words: the EBBChart is all about discovery, and if you follow it, you’ll be the first to know!
Personally, I’m thrilled to see the marvellous Uh Huh by Jade Bird (pictured) being picked up in Scandinavia, Iceland and Estonia, causing it to jump straight into the Top 3 of this week’s Top 100. Although Silk City feat. Dua Lipa still reign supreme, Jade Bird could cause a stir at the top of the EBBChart, if only she’d get some more support from radio stations and streamers in the rest of Europe.
Elsewhere, the Top 100 counts 23 (re)entries, 10 of which are completely new to the list. Two artists even have two debuting tracks each: Dutch rapper Willem (formerly half of hip hop duo The Opposites) and British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason (who already scored three EBBChart hits before these two). All ten newcomers are below:
#43: B.E.D. – Walk Away
#48: Willem – Man In Nood
#54: Eut – Look (Who Has Decided After All)
#69: Loski – Cool Kid
#84: Au/Ra – Ultraviolet
#86: L Devine – Nervous
#92: Sheku Kanneh-Mason – Evening Of Roses
#94: J. Bernardt – The Other Man
#95: Sheku Kanneh-Mason – Hallelujah
#98: Willem – Houten Pak

European Border Breakers Chart 26 October 2018
I love it when a plan comes together… Earlier this month, I raved about Sophie & The Giants’s single Bulldog and this week, it enters the European Border Breakers Chart. At #31, they’re the highest debuting artists in the Top 100 (behind Sam Fender at #19, but he had multiple EBBChart hits before). Congratulations to singer Sophie Scott (who’s soaring voice lies somewhere between Florence Welch and Alice Merton), guitarist Toby Holmes, bass player Bailey Stapledon and drummer Chris Hill!
Bulldog by Sophie & The Giants (pictured) is one out of seven tracks that enter the Top 100 this week (on a total of 23 (re)entries). These are all seven of them:
#19: Sam Fender – That Sound
#31: Sophie & The Giants – Bulldog
#42: Broadstrokes – Underwater
#44: Jimothy Lacoste – Fashion
#86: Youngr – Monsters
#96: Pom Poko – My Blood
#99: Altin Gün – Seker Oglan

European Border Breakers Chart 19 October 2018
Last week’s European Border Breakers Chart was nothing less than spectacular. What happened then, was really special and unique. Does that mean that the new, just published Top 100 is a dull one? Hell no!
Looking back to last week one more time, how does record-breaking Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle fare in this edition of the EBBChart? Very well; even better than last week. 9 out of her 12 album tracks in the combined Top 100 (airplay + streaming) are on their way up. Even more than on the radio, Angèle appears to be a streaming phenomenon. All of the 12 tracks off her debut album Brol are in the Top 17 of the Streaming Chart, with half of them populating its Top 10.
This week, 24 tracks leave the chart to make way for the same number of (re)entries. One of the exiting songs is last week’s #3: Leave A Light On by Tom Walker. Not because it suddenly wasn’t played on the radio or hasn’t been streamed anymore (on the contrary), but because it had been in the Top 100 for 52 weeks. After such a chart run, tracks are automatically removed from the EBBChart, to give other emerging artists a chance to become visible.
Among the 24 newcomers, 9 tracks enter the Top 100 for the first time:
#63: Samra – Roadrunner
#64: Dima feat. Teddy Sky – Cruel
#68: Declan J Donovan – Pieces
#71: Halo Maud – Tu Sais Comme Je Suis
#75: Touts – Can’t Blame Me
#76: Superorganism – The Prawn Song
#84: Dodie feat. Tom Walker – Human
#86: Nicklas Sahl – New Eyes
#96: Gently Tender – 2 Chords Good

European Border Breakers Chart 12 October 2018
Ed Sheeran, Drake, and Kanye West (excuse me, Ye) are just some names of artists who managed to have many album tracks in the charts simultaneously, immediately after they released a long player. All of them British or American artists, who built a large worldwide fan base over a career that included multiple albums. European artists have so far a harder time to achieve such a feat, let alone emerging European artists who, according to the chart rules of the European Border Breakers Chart, are only eligible with tracks that are less than two years old, but only if they haven’t released more than one album. Okay, artists like Superorganism and Goat Girl have seen many tracks off their first albums reach the EBBChart over the course of a few months, but not all of them together in the week following the album release.
This week, we greet the exception to the rule: Belgian singer-songwriter Angèle (pictured) dominates the Top 100. Not with many of the tracks off her last week released debut album Brol, but all of its songs are included! And all of them within the Top 65 of the combined EBBChart, which is compiled from airplay and streaming data. The fact that the tracks are in both the separate Airplay Chart and Streaming Chart as well, proves that her music is liked by radio stations and streaming music lovers alike, especially in Belgium (obviously), France, Switzerland and Poland.
Yesterday, when I reviewed her new single Tout Oublier (feat. Roméo Elvis), I wrote ‘Angèle Van Laeken is one of the most successful young artists to have come out of Belgium the past year.’ Today, I must correct that. Angèle is the most successful young artists to have come out of Belgium the past year. And rightfully so, for Brol is a great album, full of radio friendly pop tracks with a twist.
You can find all of this week’s 15 newcomers below:
#4: Sigrid: Sucker Punch
#31: Angèle feat. Roméo Elvis – Tout Oublier
#44: Angèle – Balance Ton Quoi
#47: Alma – Cowboy
#52: Angèle – Ta Reine
#53: Angèle – Nombreux
#56: Angèle – Les Matins
#57: Angèle – Flemme
#60: Angèle – Victime Des Réseaux
#62: Angèle – Flou
#84: Yoana – Da Ne Spim
#89: Fóe – Bouquet De Pleurs
#92: Rimon – Realize
#94: Otha – One Of The Girls
#96: Nana Adjoa – Down At The Root

European Border Breakers Chart 5 October 2018
The European Border Breakers Chart is the only chart that highlights cross-border success of emerging European artists. The best way to spot upcoming acts in the early stages of their careers. What’s not to like about that for a music lover, radio station or (online) magazine?
This week’s Top 100 counts 19 (re)entries, 6 of which make their first appearance in our spotlights. Most eye-catching is Grace Carter’s highest entry, of course, but the trivia are further down the chart. How about Rulli Rulli Rulli by Öed? That’s only the second Estonian act ever to make the EBBChart, thanks to airplay in Poland. And British cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason scores his third hit, this time with Dmitri Shostakovich’s The Gadfly Suite, Op. 97a: Nocturne. A classical hit in a pop dominated Top 100. French radio plays it, as they did with his first two entries.
All six newbies can be found below:
#15: Grace Carter – Why Her Not Me
#51: Oscar Jerome – Do You Really
#59: Another Sky – Chillers
#74: Öed – Rulli Rulli Rulli
#89: Viito – Bella Come Roma
#95: Sheku Kanneh-Mason – The Gadfly Suite, Op. 97a: Nocturne

European Border Breakers Chart 21 September 2018
Summer has come to an end, and so has the eight-week period that El Profesor spent at the top of the European Border Breakers Chart. That’s hardly a surprise, as the new #1, Electric City by Silk City feat. Dua Lipa, entered the Top 100 at a record-breaking #2 last week.
Elsewhere in the chart, we find 27 (re)entries, 13 of which spend their very first week in the Top 100. Another great showcase of emerging European artists that are beginning to become successful outside their home countries. My special recommendations of this bunch? Whenyoung, Pale Waves and that former Carte Blanche Music Wildcard by BC Unidos (pictured) feat. US Girls & Ledinsky.
These are all 13 first-timers:
#13: L Devine – Peer Pressure
#18: James Hype feat. Craig David – No Drama
#46: Col3trane – Resume
#55: Lil Halima – Jasmine
#69: BC Unidos (feat. US Girls & Ledinsky) – Take It Easy

European Border Breakers Chart 14 September 2018
Earlier this week I wrote about new single Why So Serious by Alice Merton, stating she is a good example of an artist who’s early successes first became visible in the European Border Breakers Chart. Another artist we are particularly proud of for the same reason, is Dua Lipa (pictured). Her first hit Be The One entered the Top 100 nearly three years ago. Living up to its name, other than in other lists, Be The One became by far her biggest EBBChart hit. Eight other of her own singles followed the song into the Top 100, just like several tracks where she appeared as the featured artist. In 2017, Dua Lipa won a European Border Breakers Award, and by 2018, everything she touches instantly turns to gold (or platinum).
This week’s highest entry is just another proof she is the pop princess of the 2010’s. Mark Ronson and Diplo’s new vehicle Silk City already scored with Feel About You (feat. Mapei) and Loud (feat. Desiigner & Goldlink), but this week they crash into the EBBChart at a record-breaking #2, reaching just 5% less listeners than the reigning #1, El Profesor. In the Streaming Chart, it even enters at #1! Guess who provides the vocals on Silk City’s new smash Electricity? You’ve got that right…
These are all of this week’s 11 newcomers:
#2: Silk City feat. Dua Lipa – Electricity
#35: The Blaze – Runaway
#41: Alice Merton – Why So Serious
#49: Pom Poko – Follow The Lights
#59: Tamino – Tummy
#76: The Blaze – Breath
#77: Dr Brs feat. Halott Pénz, Fekete Vonat, Monkeyneck – Hol Van Az A Lány
#78: Tamino – Sun May Shine
#83: Felix Sandman – Imprint
#87: Blu Samu – Sade Blu
#92: Ama Lou – Tried Up
