Wildcard (week 27):
Goodnight Sunrise – This Is Yours (To Make)
At Carte Blanche Music, we’re huge fans of Canadian artists. Well, not all of them, obviously, but there’s a lot (really A LOT) of good music coming from the country. Recent examples include Päter, Augusta, Altered By Mom, Housewife, Lights, Velours, Blonde Diamond, Jessia, Dear Rouge, noelle, Harm & Ease, Madison Olds, Allie X, Elina Filice, Lølø, Chris Corey, Ruby Waters, Goodnight Sunrise… Do you want me to continue? All of these have featured on this blog before.
Today, let’s focus on the latter. Goodnight Sunrise are a Toronto band, led by the dual male-female vocal alchemy of keytarist Vanessa Vakharia and guitarist David Kochberg. Since forming in 2011, they earned a reputation as a great live act through over 400 shows across Europe and North America.
With their new single This Is Yours (To Make) the band comes full circle. One of their first self-written songs, they originally recorded it ten years ago for their debut album Create/Destroy/Create. From the start it was clear it had the potential to become a fan favourite and anthemic concert closer (which it came to be). Since the track kept evolving over the years, Goodnight Sunrise decided to record an explosive new version of it. More powerful and punchy than ever, it’s now likely to grow from a fan favourite into a Canadian classic.
If you happen to be in the country this summer (or are lucky enough to live there), don’t miss the band while they’re on tour!
This Is Yours (To Make) by Goodnight Sunrise is the new Carte Blanche Music Wildcard. That means it’ll be featured prominently at the top of the blog for a whole week.

Wildcard (week 3): Luude & Issey Cross (feat. Moby) – Oh My
Some songs bring back great memories. I remember only too well I drove on the island of Curaçao in a cabriolet, while Moby’s Porcelain blasted out of the car stereo. A wonderful holiday in lovely company, musically as well. That must have been in the summer of 2000, when Porcelain was a worldwide hit. A beautiful, subtle song that showed another side of an artist who was previously known mostly for his harder hitting, danceable songs. Personally, I love both sides of Moby’s artistic output.
23 years later, Australian producer Christian Benson (Luude) breathes new life in the classic track. It didn’t take him much more than the original strings and a frantic drum & bass beat to make it ready for today’s dance floors. Talented 21-year-old UK singer-songwriter Issey Cross then laid some beautiful vocals on it. The new version, re-titled Oh My, already received Moby’s seal of approval. He commented: “I’d love to say something smart or insightful about Oh My, but honestly when I first heard it I simply thought, ‘fuck, this is great!’”
Bound to become a huge hit all over again! You’d better put on your dancing shoes…

David Bowie – You’ve Got A Habit Of Leaving [2000 Version]
Before David Jones called himself David Bowie, he recorded music as Davy Jones. He changed his name to avoid confusion with Davy Jones of The Monkees. The last song he released using his old moniker, in 1965, was You’ve Got A Habit Of Leaving. 35 years later, Bowie re-recorded the song, along with other tracks from his early career, using the experience and perspective he had at the time. He did so with a band that featured Sterling Campbell, Gail Ann Dorsey, Earl Slick, Lisa Germano and others. The sessions were co-produced by Mark Plati (The Cure, Natalie Imbruglia, Lou Reed).
It was Bowie’s intention to collect the new recordings on the album Toy, to be released in 2001. However, Virgin refused to put it out, which eventually led to him leaving the label. Bowie moved on and started writing and recording new songs, which would become his album Heathen. The album Toy (or a version of it) leaked online in 2011, but early next year it’ll be officially released as intended. Warner Music recently acquired the rights to Bowie’s music and will oversee the project.
The ‘new’ version of You’ve Got A Habit Of Leaving is out now as the project’s first single. The recording may be over 20 years old, but in my ears it stood the test of time.

Dirty Heads (feat. Train) – Vacation
Jared Watson, Dustin ‘Duddy B’ Bushnell, Jon Olazabal, Matt Ochoa and David Foral formed Dirty Heads in 2003. Redefining the sound of Southern California, their sound contains equal parts alternative, hip hop, reggae and rock. And not unsuccessfully so, for they amassed over 1,3 billion streams to date. As with so many hits nowadays, TikTok is a big driver recently.
The quintet released the original version of Vacation in 2017, on their sixth album Swim Team. The song pays tribute to those who love their jobs. It went on to become one of the band’s biggest hits, reaching the top echelons of Billboard’s specialist charts like Hot Rock and Alternative Airplay. As a spin-off, Dirty Heads even released their own beer; Vacation Session Ale + Pineapple.
In the summer of 2019, the track suddenly spawned the #vacationtransition trend on TikTok. This was revived in early January 2021 by influencers Bryn Sato and Glenca Chysara. The #vacationtransition hashtag now has over 45,5 million views (and counting). Over 493.000 user generated videos (including one by Jared Watson himself) were watched more than 548,5 million times.
In response to its resurgence, Dirty Heads recorded a new version of their viral hit, which features the band Train. Watson says about it: “Thank you to Pat Monahan for hopping on this new version. It’s a gift to everyone who has made us smile with their ‘Vacation Challenge’ videos over the past year.”
If you love Twenty One Pilots and don’t know Dirty Heads yet, do yourself a favour and check them out!

Moby feat. Gregory Porter & Amythyst Kiah – Natural Blues [Reprise Version]
New Yorker Moby was one of the most successful dance acts of the 1990s. His ‘Twin Peaks’ indebted single Go was a huge hit in Europe as well. It was followed by classics such as Move (You Make Me Feel So Good), Feeling So Real, Everytime You Touch Me and his ‘re-version’ of the James Bond Theme.
But Moby also turned a hugely successful album act with the release of Play. This long-player was built around samples from the famous field recordings collected by Alan Lomax. Initially Play didn’t do too well, due to the singles not being picked up by radio stations and television networks like MTV. But by licensing the songs to films, television shows and commercials, they became hits after all. This in turn resulted in radio and television joining the party after all. No less than 9 tracks off the album were released as singles.
One of those songs was Natural Blues, which originally contained an over 60 year-old sample from American folk singer Vera Hall’s Trouble So Hard. In 2021, Moby releases a new version of the song, this time featuring Gregory Porter and Amythyst Kiah. Their soulful vocals, paired with an orchestra, make for a powerful and moving combination, that gives the song a renewed energy.
This version will be included on Moby’s upcoming ‘best of’ album Reprise, set for release on 28 May. On this new compilation, the musician revisits and reinterprets his greatest hits with a host of guest singers, accompanied by the Budapest Art Orchestra. Nevertheless, it’s probably one of the most poppy records to ever come out on the legendary classical label Deutsche Grammophon.

Beach Bunny feat. Tegan & Sara – Cloud 9
Beach Bunny is a Chicago-based 4-piece around front woman Lili Trifilio. When they released their debut album Honeymoon, in 2020, the closing track Cloud 9 was one of its highlights. It was rightly released as a single, early that year, but only recently it started to truly make an impact. Thanks to TikTok (where it racked up 1.3 million(!) creations), the track re-emerged and went viral. So far, it spent five consecutive weeks on the Spotify Global Viral 50 chart, earning more than 2 million streams per day and over 78 million total streams. It also crossed from the streaming charts to Billboard’s Hot Alt Songs chart and the Rolling Stone Trending 25 chart. Meanwhile, it’s one of the most added songs at alternative radio.
And now, there’s a brand-new version of Cloud 9, that’s likely to spice things up even further. This new take on an already great tune features Canada’s finest singing twins: Tegan & Sara Quin. The Platinum-selling duo not only lent their voices to the song, but also updated its lyrics to include gender neutral and feminine pronouns.
The sisters say about the collaboration: “We’re massive fans of Beach Bunny, and when we heard Cloud 9 for the first time fell in love with the brilliant lyrics and addictive melody. We love that Lili was up to let us experiment with changing the pronoun in the chorus to ‘she’. The efforts made to make the song relatable to everyone, isn’t just about inclusivity, we think it’s a great indication of the flexibility and creative spirit of the band at its core!”
