Picture This – Take My Hand
Timing is everything in the music business. Sometimes a band, or a song, comes just that little bit too early. Picture this: in June 2016, I played Take My Hand in my Carte Blanche radio show. Then… nothing happened, really. That is, not outside their home country Ireland, where they’ve become popular in no-time.
A year and a half later, the duo – consisting of childhood friends Jimmy Rainsford and Ryan Hennessy – give the song another try. The version that is now being re-released, is the one from their eponymous debut album. The mix is a little more subtle than the original version, but as a whole, it remains the strong song it already was. Let’s take this one into the new year, shall we?

Basement Jaxx – Rendez-Vu (Jesse Garcia Remix)
Basement Jaxx have never shied away from mixing various genres into their own steaming musical cocktail. Never a dull moment, in none of their tracks. Red Alert, Rendez-Vu, Bingo Bango, Where’s Your Head At?, Good Luck, Take Me Back To Your House, Mermaid Of Bahia (do you want me to go on?)… I can’t get enough of them! Not in the least because of the great singers they work with.
Their new single is, in fact, an old one. 1999’s Rendez-Vu has been remixed by Jesse Garcia, who hasn’t altered it too radically – although a large chunk of the lyrics (“I got you in my heart, I got you in my head”) has disappeared in this version. Furthermore, it’s still the great song it has always been.
Garcia made two versions: a Club Mix and a Tribal Mix. You choose…

Basic Tape vs. Frances – No Matter
Basic Tape is a French duo, going by the names of Sav and Ben (although I’m pretty sure they have last names as well). They took the track No Matter off Frances’ album Things I’ve Never Said, speeded it up a little and surrounded it with electronica to come up with something really cool and fresh. It entered the EBBChart at #100 last week and seems to be destined for more.

Pet Shop Boys – Undertow
The Pet Shop Boys’ album Super already produced the radio singles The Pop Kids, Twenty-Something and Say It To Me. A fourth release is on its way.
The album track Undertow will be issued as a vinyl EP on 21 April. The record will feature two remixes of the lead track, a remix of Burn and, most interestingly, a new version of one of my all-time favourites: Left To My Own Devices. The latter was produced by Stuart Price, who based his mix on the version the Pet Shop Boys perform during their (still ongoing) Super Tour.
If Pet Shop Boys would ever consider releasing another single proper from their Super album, I’d suggest this sure fire hit… it’s Groovy baby!

Lukas Graham – Drunk In The Morning
Hallelujah, it’s here at last! This is a future worldwide hit that was five years in the making. Let me take you back in time…
In January 2013 I was at some posh music industry diner, where I happened to sit next to the music director for MTV Denmark and Finland. We were exchanging upcoming artists from our countries and she came up with Lukas Graham. I instantly loved the soulful single Drunk In The Morning from their debut album, that had been a hit in Denmark in 2012. I immediately started playing it in my radio show Carte Blanche and I honestly admit that I’ve been stalking the record company ever since to release it. Which they didn’t.
Only in 2016 a Lukas Graham album was released internationally. This was essentially a compilation of their first two Danish albums, with remixed versions of their earlier domestic hits. It also featured the worldwide hit 7 Years. In the spring of 2016 it appeared Drunk In The Morning would be re-released as its follow-up. But the record company decided to come up with songs that resembled the more poppy sound of 7 Years: Mama Said and You’re Not There. They scored considerably less than expected.
So now, it’s time for something more ‘adventurous’: the re-release of Drunk In The Morning is finally here, complete with a new video. I still think it’s a banger, that should be able to replicate the success of 7 Years. You be the judge…

Tom Tyger – Dimini
Many people will only remember Guinea singer-songwriter Mory Kanté for his pan European number one hit Yé Ké Yé Ké, the first ever African single to sell over one million copies, back in 1988. Although he never repeated the success of this song (despite numerous remix versions), Kanté recorded a total of 11 albums.
The album Tamala/The Voyeur (2001) contained the track Dimini. You’ll immediately recognize it as a Mory Kanté track, although the production is somewhat more modern. Which isn’t strange of course, 13 years on…
French remixer Tom Tyger has updated the track once again and released this remix under his own name. Mory Kanté’s name is nowhere to be found. So, now that we’ve set the record straight, enjoy this cover. For that’s what it is…
