Blondie – Fun
Perhaps you weren’t even born when Blondie was formed, in 1974. Still, you will be able to sing along with classics like Denis, Call Me and (more recently – ‘only’ 18 years ago) Maria.
After all those years, Blondie shows no signs of giving up. On 5 May, they release their next album Pollinator. It was recorded in New York’s famous studio The Magic Shop, where David Bowie recorded his last two albums as well. That’s not all; Pollinator is the very last album recorded in The Magic Shop, before the studio closed its doors forever. You can look forward to collaborations with Blood Orange, Johnny Marr, Charli XCX and Sia. Sounds like Fun, doesn’t it?

High Contrast – Shotgun Mouthwash
High Contrast is the stage name of British remixer and drum & bass-producer Lincoln Barrett, whose father was the manager of Shakin’ Stevens, decades ago. High Contrast released one or more singles in most years of this century so far, and the diversity of styles he displays is incredible. That’s great from an artistic point of view, but it doesn’t make it easy to pigeonhole his music. And… that’s great from an artistic point of view as well 😉
His new single Shotgun Mouthwash is from the ‘T2 Trainspotting’ soundtrack and vaguely sounds like a psyched up version of Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit In The Sky. I tagged its genre as ‘rock’ for stereotyping purposes, but feel free to give it any other label you like. High Contrast probably couldn’t care less.

Mist – Dark Side
I told you about Rick Treffers’ band Mist before, when they released a live video for the track Hey as a teaser for their upcoming album Underwater. This collection of outtakes, duets, covers, (live) versions, B sides and remixes is officially released on 2 March.
And what’s more: it will, after 15 years, be the last record to be released under the Mist moniker. Treffers will soon reveal under what name he will go on (for he will continue). After that, we won’t have to wait too long for new material, for the next album is scheduled to be released in 2018. (UPDATE: only hours after this post it became clear that Rick Treffers will release this album under his own name).
Yesterday, Mist introduced the first single proper off Underwater: Dark Side. Its video is based on images of the movie ‘Tango Durch Deutschland’, with singer/actor Eddie Constantine. A lovely song!

Grouplove – Good Morning
This band was formed in 2005 by five American friends, one of them being the son of Trevor Rabin (former guitarist in symphonic rock band Yes). Ryan Rabin is the drummer and producer of Grouplove, and also one third of songwriting/production/remix team Captain Cuts, who worked for Walk The Moon, Tove Lo, Halsey, Marina & The Diamonds and many others.
Grouplove’s best-known song is Tongue Tied, from their 2011 debut album Never Trust A Happy Song. Their latest album Big Mess, co-produced by Phil Ek of The Shins, Band Of Horses and Fleet Foxes fame, already spawned the great singles Welcome To Your Life, Do You Love Someone, Traumatized and Enlighten Me. But there is more where these are coming from, as the fifth single Good Morning proves.

Wildcard (week 5): LP – Other People
This track is climbing the Carte Blanche Music ladder like a hit that’s climbing the charts. I wrote about LP’s new single Other People last weekend and it immediately progressed into my ‘best of playlist’ Werner’s Weekly. Now, the song takes the next step, since I chose it as next week’s Wild Card. This means, it will feature prominently at the top of this blog for the whole week to come.
American singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi penned hits for Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and others, but also records music herself. Last summer her single Lost On You was a top 10 hit all over Europe and I predict the follow-up, the infectious Other People, will soon head in the same direction. A little support from Carte Blanche Music probably won’t hurt… 😉

Thomas Dybdahl – 3 Mile Harbor
Norwegian Thomas Dybdahl started his career as a guitarist, influenced by bands like Metallica and Led Zeppelin. But as a solo singer-songwriter he exchanged the explosions for implosions in his music, combining pop with folk, a little country and a touch of jazz.
We’ve had to wait four years for his new album The Great Plains, that comes out on 24 February. Luckily a first taste, his new single 3 Mile Harbor, is already available.

Urban Cone – Old School
When Swedish band Urban Cone was formed, in 2010, all four members were attending the same high school. They make feel-good electro-pop, which consistently takes the shape of irresistible tracks.
After touring with fellow Swedish rising star Tove Lo and The Griswolds, they are now ready to unleash their third album A Whole Lifetime Of Happiness. The songs – the band says – are ‘anchored by harder, hip-hop-influenced beats and funky guitars’, but that doesn’t prevent this new single from being every bit as catchy as their earlier output.

Drive Like Maria – Taillight
This Belgian/Dutch band broke through via the Global Battle Of The Bands in 2005. After winning the Dutch qualifying round, they ended second in the international finals, which landed them a record deal.
Drive Like Maria recently released the EP’s Creator and Preserver and bundled them with 4 additional tracks into the album Creator, Preserver, Destroyer. The new single Taillight is easily their most accessible and commercially sounding yet. Playlist material, both for radio and Spotify.

LP – Other People
LP is (in this case) short for Laura Pergolizzi. She’s an American singer-songwriter who penned hits for Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and others. Also, since the beginning of this century, she records music herself. Her first three albums were released on ever so many labels and failed to be commercially successful.
It looks like the tide is turning for LP however. Last summer her single Lost On You was a top 10 hit all over Europe and she just finished the video for her next effort: Other People…

Dagny – Backbeat
In October 2015 Norwegian singer Dagny Sandvik released her single Backbeat. By that time she had been living in London for some time yet, where she worked on her debut album with other songwriters. In January last year I saw her show at the Eurosonic Noorderslag festival. There still was no album, but she played a lot of tracks off it (presumably). One even catchier than the other. After that performance I made Backbeat the track of the week in my radio show and it ended up as one of my favourites of 2016.
That year, Dagny also released Fool’s Gold (a duet with Børns) and the Ultraviolet EP, all surrounded with little promotion. Hopefully all this is about to change, as Backbeat has yet to be released properly in the UK. The date has been pushed back several times already, but has now been set at 10 February. Hopefully it will be a big hit as yet, triggering a re-release in other countries. Click and enjoy!
