Mai Lan – Vampire
I only learned about the existence of Mai Lan last year, when she sang on and co-wrote 4 tracks of M83’s album Junk. Among them the great Go! And Bibi The Dog.
The French singer released her self-titled debut album, featuring songs in French and English, in 2012 and currently works on a new one. In between her work for M83 (with whom she toured in support of their album), she already released the singles Technique and Haze in 2016. The follow-up, the softly bouncing Vampire, is out now.

Suarez – Ni Rancœur Ni Colère
Suarez is a Belgian band, named after Portuguese explorer Diego Suarez, who came to Madagascar in 1500. Most of the members are originally from Madagascar, which explains the Malagache influences in their music, alongside elements of pop, rock, acoustic music and latin.
Ni Rancœur Ni Colère is the first single off their upcoming fourth album.

Daniel Kvammen – Me Dansar Ikkje For Moro Skyld
Of course, English is the predominant language in pop music. But there is so much more! And let me warn you: I see it as my mission to expose you to it from time to time.
Daniel Kvammen is from Norway for example, and he sings in his own language. Apparently he doesn’t have any ambitions to break out of his home country, since his website and Facebook page are all in Norwegian. But luckily music speaks a universal language and – although I have no idea what it is about – his new single is a jewel!
(if you want to sing along: the lyrics are right underneath the video)

Archive – The False Foundation
Archive was formed in London as a trip-hop band, back in 1994. Now, ten studio albums later, they combine electronic and rock in a hybrid of their own.
In October last year they released they latest album, The False Foundation. The title track has been chosen as the third single off it. The band couples a pulsating rhythm, that brings on flashbacks to the eighties, with layers of guitars and industrial sound effects without losing sight of the melody. It’s actually just a pop song in disguise.

Wildcard (week 4):
-M- (feat. Fatoumata Diawara & Oxmo Puccino) – Bal De Bamako
-M- is the stage name of French singer-songwriter and guitarist Matthieu Chedid. This year it’s 20 years ago that his debut record came out. In March he releases his sixth album Lamomali. -M- recorded it with Malian musicians Toumani Diabaté and Sidiki Diabaté.
The first single off the album, the brilliant Bal De Bamako, features singer Fatoumata Diawara and rapper Oxmo Puccino, who are both originally from Mali as well. The track combines disco, funk, hip hop and world music into one swinging mix (or should I say ‘melange’?). While listening how that sounds, take a closer look at the beautiful artwork. Things are not always what they seem…
The whole week, this great song will feature prominently on this blog, as it’s the new Wildcard!

Georgia – Feel It
Georgia Barnes is the 25 year old daughter of Leftfield’s Neil Barnes, so no-one was surprised when she started a musical career for herself. She developed into a multi-instrumentalist, producer and songwriter, who only released her self-titled debut album in 2015. On the back of that the London-based artist criss-crossed the continent in 2016 on a hectic touring schedule.
Now she’s back with an energetic, beat-laden new track. That’s no surprise either, since Georgia is a very promising drummer herself. The video shows five other female drummers of all ages and backgrounds, expressing what they feel when playing. The universal message, according to Georgia, is ‘that whoever you are or wherever you’re from, we all share rhythm and heightened feelings’.

Maxïmo Park – Risk To Exist
Lovely to have Maxïmo Park back on the scene. Not that they have been away, really. The band release their sixth album Risk To Exist on 21 April and announce they have added more ‘soulful grooves’ to their trademark hook-laden melodies. The record was recorded completely live in Wilco’s studio The Loft in Chicago, with Tom Schick (Wilco, Beck) producing. Mimi Parker from the band Low lends his warm voice to five of the tracks.
One of those is the title track, a plea for humanity, which has been chosen as the first single off the album.

Biffy Clyro – Flammable
The first incarnation of what would eventually become Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro, called Skrewfish, was formed in 1995. The members were only teens by then. It took until 2002 before their debut album would come out. Last year, the trio released their seventh long player, Ellipsis.
After opening for the likes of The Who, Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Rolling Stones, Biffy Clyro are now firm headliners themselves. The next two weeks they’ll be doing concerts all over Europe. One song that’s certain to be on the setlist is their new single Flammable.
Do you remember last year’s Everybody by Don Broco? That incredible track ended second in the Carte Blanche Top 2016. This Biffy Clyro song has the same tight, staccato production. Ch-ch-check it out!

Sir Notch – Please Don’t Go (Sam Feldt Edit)
Sir Notch is a Dutch dance pop project surrounded by some mystery. It is unclear who is/are hiding behind that smiley face. As far as the summery new single Please Don’t Go is concerned, the credits reveal that Sir Notch likes to work with talented people. The track was written by Christon Kloosterboer (who appeared on this blog before). He was also asked to sing the track. Furthermore, Sir Notch asked Sam Feldt to provide the radio edit. No wonder that radio’s response to the song is very positive.
Or for all you Spotify freaks out there:

Blaudzun – Press On (Monday’s Child)
The Netherlands are a small country. Or, in economic terms, a small market. Not many artists can live from their music. Unless, perhaps, when they manage to break through internationally.
Blaudzun is already selling out concerts in Belgium and Germany. May many more countries follow! And if not, he can perhaps take courage from his own new single. That’s an encouragement to bravely go on in case of set-back. He wrote it for his teeny daughter, by the way…
